U.S. Congress voted to pass H.R. 2003 without objection!

October 3rd, 2007 |  |  8 Comments

A GREAT DAY FOR AMERICA!

A GREATER DAY FOR ETHIOPIA!

U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES PASSED

H.R. 2003 AT 12:58 EASTER STANDARD TIME

The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 2003 (Ethiopia Democracy and Accountability Act of 2007) on a unanimous vote at exactly 12:58 Eastern Standard Time. Donald Payne delivered an impassioned speech on the floor of the House urging members pass the bill. He outlined the long train of human rights abuses that have taken place in Ethiopia over the past two years. He said the people of Ethiopia deserve democracy and human rights and a government of their choice.

Congressman Chris Smith, similarly delivered an impassioned speech and recounted Zenawi’s arrogant lecture that he planned to imprison all of the opposition leaders. Smith joined Payne in insisting that the U.S. demand of the Ethiopian government accountability for the aid that it receives and compliance with human rights laws.

All Ethiopians should take this opportunity to thank Congressmen Donald Payne, Chris Smith, Tom Lantos and Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer for their support in getting this legislation passed. When we needed their help, we called upon them . NOW IT IS TIME TO CALL AND SAY: “THANK YOU.”

The Coalition will issue further statements on action in the Senate soon.

  1. Daniel says:

    Dear ER,

thank you so much so far for calling a spade a spade. While EPRDF seems to be beaten at this front their next moves will be from two important directions. I wish you could raise some awarness on the issue.

    1. EPRDf will try to dry up the significant source of money for kinijit… the diaspora. In this regard it will not be long before they come up with some funny campaign financing law that will target kinijit. They will try their damnest to try to prevent the transfer of funds collected so far. Please urge the kinijit leaders to device a mechanism by which they can shelter their gains.

    2. The other serious issue is going to be the challange to Kinijit’s legality in an attempt to furstrate them and to delay reorganisation and regrouping. Kinijit’s leader should be very tactful and flexible in order to surmount this problem. They should start to seriously prepare for this inevitible challange.

    Regards

    Daniel

With the chamelon Zenawi oppression not leadership. It is up to him to choose for Mr. George Bush to stand either with oppressed Ethiopian people or Zenawi.

  5. Hager Wodad says:

Congratulations to all freedom and Democracy lovers!
I’m so happy that our efforts are beginning to bear fruit. Let’s campaign heavy when the bill goes to the Senate. We should use our political rights here in the US to stop the butcher from continuing his tyranny.
Did you notice that every time we make some gain the dictators start talking about war with Eritrea to divert attention? These two dictators need each other to survive by spreading fear. We should expose this old trick.

    Ethiopia will rise!

Bad day for Ethiopia. This vote will further divides the Ethiopian people. Why would the oppostion parties put their act together instead of courting other powers. This will discourage the government in power now from taking any positive action toward democracy. The United States congress never taken any action when Rwanda was in blood bath.We Ethiopians can take care of our problem .This is proved by ethiopian elders.

  7. Shambel says:

Dear brothers and sisters; it is really wonderful to have such action taken from the Sole Donor of Meles Zenawi to brutally murder and butcher his own people.

It is known that we should not wait until the US come and intervene in our issue. However, if it stops supporting the brutality of Meles the rest will be handled by the people of Ethiopia and the democratic leaders or at this level the opposition parties. As of the Ethiopian Elders, they did a lot and they deserve to be thanked. When we come to see from different angle, the ruling party also wants them to do something for itself. Hence their power is limited.

All in all, the main duty of gaining Democracy or Human Right respect is left for the people of Ethiopia.

For now, we need to thank the US Congressmen and women for the pass of the bill.

    God bless Ethiopia. Amen.
