It has been a tradition of Ethiopian Review to select 'Person of the Year' at the end of every year. In preparation for the selection this year, we have posted 14 nominees and close to 500 readers made their choice known. After consulting with ER advisers, and on the suggestion of many readers, this year we have decided that instead of we making the selection ourselves, we will let the readers vote from among the final 6 out of the 14 nominees. This year, we have also added 'Who harmed the people of Ethiopia the most in 2007?' There are 5 nominees in that category. We will leave the decision to readers. I was one of those people who admired Hailu Shawl's commitment to a cause when many who knew him closely advised me otherwise. To them Hailu is hypocrite, shallow, vindictive, stubborn, and a know-it all buffoon. What we have seen in the past 4 to 5 months is even worse. He has no vision, no consistency; he is cruel, corrupt and a crude dictator. I believe he would be one of the worst leaders Ethiopia has seen if he were to be elected. Believe me we will soon see Hailu allying with Meles and working for the destruction of all genuine CUD leaders. I do not believe he is the type of person who would repent and correct his mistakes. I am happy that every Ethiopian who has closely followed the events of the past 4 to 5 months has realized that there is no hope in Hailu's leadership in the CUD and that we should all work hard to support Bertukan and those working with her. You will see Hailu going down the drain with his corrupt, narrow-minded and 'ene kemotiku srdo ayibikels" and we all should wish the best of luck in the gutters.

Elias, I voted against Hailu Shawl and have a cange of heart. Hailu should never be considered a candidate since he is stupid and irrelevant. A stupid like Shawel does not hurt anyone, but himself. He cannot manage his own mouth let alone a country. I like Hailu the politician turned a comedian in three months.

Dear Elias,
Though i respect individual rights of expressing ideas, i sometimes feels that something which could hurt Ethiopia should not be entertained at all.. specialy on web pages like Ethiopian Review which is the most visited page of all…. i strongly believe that there is much evidence and truth on:
1. Meles Zenawi is the most damaging figure that Ethiopia never had before in its eternity
2. Issayas Afeworki of Eritrea has never ever been of help to the betterment of Ethiopia though i strongly believe he has all the potential to be prominent conributor in te region… he did not practice it at all.
3. Eventhough Haliu shawel and his narrow minded fellows are very much damaging to the cause of the Nations, thier evil is not comparable to that of Meles Zenawi. If there is anybody comparable to Meles Zenawi i bet it is only Adolf Hitler of Germany, ANd Idi Amin of Uganda.
Ethiopia shall prevail forever!

It was a tough choice, but I voted for Issayas Afworki for two reasons:
1) When the Americans, Europenas, Arabs and the Africans turned their backs on our people, Issayas Afwerki made many efforts to give a voice to the voiceless people of Ethiopia. Eritrean Television had kept the Ethiopians living inside and outside the coutry informed about developments concerning election turmoil in our country.
2) Thanks to Eritrea and its leadership, our freedom fighters fighting to free our country from the weyanne rule are remarkably disciplined and extremely well organized. Because of that fact, the weyanne troops are encountering heavier-than-expected resistance from well-organized EPPF and other guerrilla groups.

Dear Mr. Elias
I appreciate your efforts in conducting survey on this matter.
I think you are beside pro-democracy group in Kinijit. Therefore the possible most harmful person of the year for Ethiopia and his supporters may undermine your survey taking it as biased.
Please could you encourage other websites, which are more neutral in Kinijit’s internal problems? It might affect the mischievous and his followers at least physiologically, albeit they do it deliberately.

I think obbo Daud Ibsa deserve more of the person of the year.Reasons i'm saying this despite he is facing opposition from many oromos and denial from CUD official who toured the North America, he stood by the AFD and for betterment of the country in general.He is still thinks and struggles for the oromoos can live democratically under Ethiopian umberella.I think that is hounourable idea.So he should be the person of the year.Elias,merry christmas to you and your Family!!!!

I think Iyasu and Taye are given wrong value. Both of them have nothing to harm or add to Ethiopia's politics, except their claim as a poletican for themselves. Also Meles is his business to distroy Ethiopia and its people from earth, if he can. Hence, these three names should be cancelled from "harm Ethiopia" list.

I believe Hailu shawel has dissapointed a lot of people. However there is no mistake his true color is out in the public. u r right Challa (22). I have found Ethiopian Review and Ethiomedia to be very biased. Altough you, Elias, are entitled to your preferences ,your postings clearly show you are pro-Birtukan-Berhanu. I really admire you for taking this position ,because most people including me dont know where we stand ,and this is in part because of the information that we gather left and right. 4 or 5 months ago when someone who knows Hailu Shawul very well told me about his firm-standing to cause and priciples i really admired him and wished all these wouldn't have happened. Then when I heard the speech of Dr. Berhanu Nega at the Kinjit Washington DC meeting I was really impressed and prayed these people would work toghether.
However the truth will always fluorish and pretty soon we will find our own path with or without kinijit, however the media should refrain from incorporating personal matters of the politicians in the struggle for democarcy.Sometimes we all forget that these politians need to eat in order to live and on top of that when we disclose information to the public, such information MUST BE well backed.
For example last week ,a good friend of mine who read Elias's report on Hailu Shawul's acquisition of government jobs in the Amhara region and so on …was telling me that " Hailu Shawul is making in millions in the Amhara region". Not only that , he also told me the exact figure he made . As always i went to read this on Ethiopianreview and he was right , that is how it was stated, and that was the understanding of most of the ethiopianreview community as i understood from the comments section.
1)Elias ,nowhere in your report you provide the infromation that the millions dollars that you reported were the project cost and not Hailu Shawuls profit. Note that in any part of the world , project informations are released in terms of $ amounts for the project cycle from feasibility studies to completion.
Now,Ethiopianreview may not have the knowledge to brake this down , but since this is going in the ears of the general public a second tought should have been given to it.
2)Second no where in your report you said what Shawul Consult does in the project. That would have helped the readers to use their common sense to estimate what portion of the project cost goes to Hailu Shawul. Again if this is not to the knowledge of Ethiopianreview , experts or people knowleageble with construction project experience should have been consulted, for the only reason that the $ amounts are mostly taken by the construction portion of the project and and not by the consulting portion which Shawul Consult does.
In conclusion please when you reveal information , make sure you are confident and crystal clear in order not to repeat the mistakes our politicians including Ato Hailu Shawul are making.

We should at least know who this very soon passing year was the saint and who was the devil. Taking this apportunity, I will select from the two lists the following persons. My vote for the person of the year goes to Prof. Alemayehu GebreMariam. My vote for the peroson that did unspeakable harm goes to the liar and dictator Engineer Hailu Shawel. I did not find anybody that can compete with his divisive, though not with success, evil doing.

Even though poll results depend on the questionnaires and political fever, mostly they give valuable information. Regardless of the result, our politicians who are included in this poll need to pay attention to Ethiopians’ opinion concerning their political activities. Some of them may have to ponder about making some adjustments on their programs to gain or restore public support.

I admire your commitment and boldness, while I have to stress also that you sometimes push hard issues you believe are right for whatever reasons, without providing conviencing evidence. Your argument that Shabia has learned from its past relations with Woyane and wants to maintain good relationship with Ethiopians and help Ethiopias to establish demoractic system is a case in point. There are no evidence to prove this point so far to say the least.
Regarding 'Person of the Year' you shoud not have came up with your finalized list of candidates, further dividing them into who are worst and who are best. It would have been much better if you leave that to the voters.
