A good move. I have always said most of these guys will give woyane a bleeding nose from abroad than at home. Woyanes do not allow free political participation. Fighting them from the outside inside is the only option left. It is going to be a long struggle, yet we will prevail. Thank you Dr Berhanu and Co. for dedictating your life for the liberation of our country.

THE RIGHT DECISION IN THE RIGHT TIME. HOW HUMAN BEING NEEDS A PREMISSION FROM WEYANES TOLIVE AND WORK IN HIS OR HER OWN COUNTRY? THIS IS WHAT ETHIOPIANS NEED TO DO. WEYANES WILLNEVER SLEEP ANY MORE AS THEY HAVE SLEPT FOR THE LAST 17 YEARS BY KILLING ETHIOPIANS. LET US STAND TOGETHER AND SAVE OUR PPL FROM ADWA’S SCAVENGERS AND DO A HISTORY FOR ONCE AND FOR ALL BY INSTALLING TRUE AND GEUINE DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOM TO OUR POOR AND PEACEFULL PEOPLE. I AM SURE DR BIRHANU AND ATO ANDARGACHEW WILL TAKE US TO VICTORY. WE ARE WITH YOU. WE KNOW ATO ANDARGACHEW HOW HAS STRUGGLED TO FREE OUR LEADERS VIA KIL, WE KNOW DR BIRHANU VERY WELL. BOTH ARE THE LIONS OF ETHIOPIA. BUT WHERE ARE THOSE BLOODY HODAMS LIKE TAYE, SHALEQA ADMASSE, BEZABEH, BISHU MAMMO, DEMELASH AND OTHER HODE ADERESE?

  9. Girma Kassa says:

It is really sad to see prominent Ethiopians like Dr Berhanu Nega leave KINIJIT/UDJ. Dr Berhanu Nega’s speeches, book, interviews have changed and inspired many. I am one of them. He has been my mentor and someone I looked to.

I had hoped that Dr Berhanu would return back to Ethiopia, join his colleagues and continue the struggle for freedom and democracy. I had hoped he will go to the finish line. Well, he didn’t. He gave up. He LOST HOPE. He gave his back on “KINIJIT”.

Well, there will always be disappointments in a struggle. However, the struggle will continue. Kinijit/UDJ has never been about individuals. People come people go. The struggle for peace, democracy and UNITY of ETHIOPIA will continue. The train will move without them.

In this occasion, I ask all UDJ/KINIJIT supporters to do not let this disappointment affect your dedication. This is no time to go back. This is no time to be embroiled with the talk about individuals. Kinijit/UDJ has millions that support him. WE WILL NOT GIVE UP.

As long as we are together, as long as we do not give hope, as long as we are organized, as long we have the commitment and dedication we shall prevail.

To Dr Berhanu, I say the following :” I respect your stand. Thanks for being honest. Thanks for all your contributions. I hope one day int the near future you will come back to us. I am sure that you will find out soon that a struggle from the diaspora will take you no-where. Remember EPRP , MEISON.. Good luck Sir.”

Well done guys this is what weyane wants, weyane has no respect for the people but themselves, they cannot improve. They must be removed. It is appropriate to quote Friere(1975:148), who had the following to say about the obstacle to human development presented by the system of a few on top:
‘No one can be authentically human while he prevents
others from being so. The attempt to be born human,
    individualistically, leads to having more,
egotistically: a form of dehumanization. Not that
it is not fundamental to have in order to be
human. Prcisely because it is necessary, some men’s
having must not be allowed to consitute an
obstacle to others:having,to consolidate the power
of the former to crash the latter.’

I admire Andargachew for his unique combination of intellectual and political personality in envisioning an all embracing and comprehensive vision and then articulating it in careful political language. Though many of us didn’t adequetly appreciate the capacity of this man, he is a great political architect. Sad as it may be, however, such personalities has no life in Ethiopian akaaki zeraaf politics. So he has been, I presume. I couldn’t be sure whether this resignation papaer is indeed a resignation just from Kinjit or from politics. Let time judge!! I couldn’t imagine how people like him and Fekade Shewaqena joined in the first place those archaic minded people like Hailu shawel, when their vision was far beyond the old Abysinian politics.

Broad new unity within diversity coupled with sustained, persistent and unbending struggle will open the door to the Garden of Eden.

If there is an open door, one needs to rush in through it. If the door is firmly closed, one needs to open it. If the door refuses to get opened, one must make a brand new door.

Life is always a challenge but the stage is a world of all posibilities. Fast social change in all its forms characterizes the current 21st century of ours.

Change and transition is stressful for humanity and ecology who ever and wherever we are. But a diverse and united group of transformational leaders can effectively act as agents of change for the positive and the good, if enough wise.

Wayane dictatorship can only be transformed through broad unity within diversity, or else it becomes just like waiting for the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Bravo Dr. Berhanu, this is the best written political document I have read in a while in Amharic, this guy seems like a visionary, he will unite all Ethiopians under a banner with equality, gone will be the tribal politics that were covered with party names. This guys get it and are ready to do the hard work, take Ethiopia out of the middle ages and into the 21st century, the road will be long and protracted but as long as they have such a clear message the people will be behind them, they will unite all the diverse political forces and create a nation all Ethiopians and people of horn will be proud of. Take heart Ethiopians you have friends around you who are ready to support you in your endeavour to create a just and democratic nation in our midst. Woyanne may have the super powers on their side but Dr. Berhanu and his coleagues have the people of Ethiopia and our region on their side, in the end weapons and patronage by superpowers can’t stop a peoples desire for genuine freedom.

Dr Berihanu and Ato Andargaschew et al are very smart and courageous people to bring together the already polarized nations to struggle together. Those who do emphasize individual citizen’s freedom and those who do stress on collective national (“ethnic”) freedom can come together under these visionary leaders to get rid of the very barbaric regime we ever had in our country.

In the last few days, I was wondering when we will hear from Dr Berhanu & whether he will return home to join his colleagues in the party that is being reorganised with a new name. This press release makes it clear. My appeal to all freedom loving Ethiopians is to support whichever group they want to support without ridiculing & insulting other groups that follow different approaches or methods of struggle to bring about freedom in Ethiopia. As the press release said, I hope that all groups who have a similar end game will work together in issues that are acceptable to all and disagree but respect others’ plans in issues they have differences. Good luck to all who are making huge sacrifies for a better Ethiopia!

From its creation and natural behaviour Weyanne never stands for Ethiopia and Ethiopians. Today, this brutal narrow minded regime is getting fat while the majority people are starving to death. I am not sure why some people have been bragged about this changing strategy that incudes Mr. Girma Kassa. As an individual, I made this decision long time ago and kept it inside me until this day. But, if you have a boat in which the majority of the people are rowing forward, then you are more likely to go forward to your destination and that’s how this Movement must be.

This is a great decision. No one, least of all those of us in the diaspora who think of ourselves as heros because we contributed $10, attended a peaceful demonstration or wearing a pin with Ethiopian flag, can questions the committment and motive of Berhanu, Andargacew and friends. They have proved themselves in the wor front during the 2005 election. I say they made a great move. These will compliment the peaceful/legal struggle of Andinet (UDJ). Without some pressure which operates outside its control, Woyane will not budge. Berhanu and Andargachew are capable individuals who can give direction to the struggle by uniting all the opposition forces. Mind you, they never said they will go to Asmera to start armed struggle. They know this will not work. Melesse and Essayas will not allow any legitimate opposition to succeed against the other. If this was not the case, OLF and Eritrean opposition forces that are supported by Shabea and Woyane respectively would have made some dent in their cause of struggle. The method of struggle Berhanu and Andargachew chose, if done correctly, could be the stick that would force Woyane to the negotiating table with all stake holders in Ethiopia. Best wishes!!!!!!

  52. Abeba Tesfahun says:

    Folks!

To be honest with you I am the kind of Ethiopian who cannot even harm a one eyed lame fly creeping on my own legs. I respect life and living in all of its holistic forms.

But if others midunderstand and flagrantly abuse my good nature and my good humnistic wills as a matter of inherent weakness I have the natural responsibilities of resisting criminal brutalities of no end.

Wayane is an evil organized minority killer dictatorial force that is made to abuse and violate not only fundamental basic human rights alone but also environmental, ecological and animal rights too. Think of the Wayane’s brutal slaughtering of a rare noble Ethiopian lion, skinning it and selling the skin for $100 miserable coins to buy scotch whysky for its cadres.

The minority dictatorship is leading and forcing Ethiopia and the Ethiopians to the edge of extinction.

Days in days out the group mainly plans, develops and implements instruments of war and warfare for the constant killings of the already poor and weak both in Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea.

Only a new broad based sustainable unity within diversity engaging the TPLF in a well organized from corner to corner will tame the facist bulls just like you have noticed the resemblace of it in Kenya. Sadly enough, in Kenya hundreds dead and thousands displaced, but most of the objectives of the violent struggle have been met and that is what exactly matters because it actually transformed the society in a somewhat fundamental way.

If the opposition keeps doing only what it has been doing until now, it will also keep getting all what it has been getting from the TPLF dictators. That is to say, dividing, disbanding, displacing, jailing, massacaring and hidden ongoing genocides.

The opposition’s planned and motivated new broad based united front will surely make an end to the parochial and inhuman medieval dictatorship sucking the spiritual, physical, psychological and material resources of the majority of Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.
There must be an end to injustice!

  59. Tesfa says:

I spoke to a girl from Zambia recently and she couldn’t understand why Ethiopians stand Woyane. She asked me why Ethiopians, who are subject to inexplicable horrors and perpetrations by Woyane, do not stand together and fight it. She said, after all, Ethiopians are being treated by Woyane as subhumans. There could be nothing worse than this, she said. She reminded me how South Africans fighted aparthied. She said, everyone knows the cause of fighting aparthied and the eventual freedom was worth their life. She asked me what else on earth than freedom is worth fighting and worth life. I had only little to say.

I believe Ethiopians sufferings at the cruel hands of Woyane is not worth than the hardship of fighting Woyane. Some of us, like I am, might hesitate but there are thousands brave hearts and heros who knows the cause of freedom properly and seriously to understand that it is worth life. I have to admitted I am not surprised by Dr. Berhanu and co. decision. They faced Woyane face to face and know how vicious Woyane is. Do not expect Woyane to play contested elections anymore. The rest of the story… I will leave it for you.

  60. Surafel says:

I agree with the sentiment of the press release that it is about time we need to instill the political maturity in ourselves, so that we could agree to disagree. Any movement that is anti the current parasitic regime in Ethiopia needs and deserves our support. I think it is high time we stopped squabbling who is the best or which one is effective and let everyone follow his/her own gut level instinct. I also think we need to cooperate on the larger issues, like the coming May 15 demonstrations all over the world. It doesn’t matter which group or groupings is organizing the event in the city we are living; we should all stand shoulder to shoulder and the TPLF criminals it is time to go.

Regarding the decision of the current quintet, I have my misgivings but wish them luck nevertheless. Even though I don’t share their enthusiasm for armed struggle, I know they are good people and will do their level best for Ethiopia and Ethiopians.

I am a bit disappointed with Dr. B though, it looks like there was a bit of deception going on all the while he was touring with the other Kinijit delegates in North America. My impression during that tour, meeting after meeting, he was one of the team and convinced he was there for the long haul with this group and they all were going back Addis to reignite the people’s movement once again. Now I see that while the four delegates meant what they said during those meetings, Dr. Berhanu was on a constituency poaching expedition. He was with this group to test the water and see which elements/individuals of the Kinijit support he could recruit for his own organization that he was planning to form later. I believe this was deceptive and not fair, but this is politics and apparently Sunday school morality does not apply here.

To those who are lamenting about sadness and hopelessness, I have this to say:

If you really believe you care about Ethiopia, then you have an equal stake and responsibility on all her welfare. Remember, Dr. Berhanu is just one Ethiopian among 80 million other Ethiopians and as such, his responsibility towards Ethiopia is not any different than yours or mine. Yes, he has contributed more, much more than you and I, towards the enlightenment of our people about democracy and peaceful struggle (even though he is on the verge of abandoning the later now) and we all are thankful for that. Let’s also remember that there are a lot of unsung heroes in the Kinijit movement, individuals who were willing to risk everything including: their livelihood, their freedom, their blood and YES lives too, that catapulted the CUDP movement into the world stage. If it wasn’t for these millions and millions of Ethiopians that defied the TPLF crime cartel and showed up at Mskel Square in May 2005, to show their contempt for the TPLF in support of Kinijit, we wouldn’t be having this discussion today.

Let’s also remember that there are actually leaders in Ethiopia today that are working day and night, tirelessly, without the sexy glare of webcams and far away from bloggers and PalTalk pundits, organizing Ethiopians to oppose the regime. Let’s remember Bertukan who is working day and night and despite taking flaks from all quarters, has managed to keep her eyes on the ball. Let’s remember Dr. Yacob who hasn’t lost his faith in the peaceful movement and is keeping his promise to Ethiopians to keep the struggle going till victory. Are any of you aware that Dr. Yacob gave up a tenure track at the University he was lecturing and sold his house in VA to move his family to Ethiopia to continue the struggle?

If there is any hopelessness in the movement, it is the hopelessness of people like you and me my friends. We are not willing to do our bit and just keeping complaining about how others are killing our hopes and aspirations. I guarantee you, there are those of us who will not be showing up for the May 15 protest demonstrations if it is going to be a rainy day and I say, that is really pathetic. For a starter, let’s try to join the local UDJP (Kinijit) chapter in our city and try to be active there and by active I don’t mean just paying the 10 or 20 monthly dues and expect a miracle from others; as we have been doing the last 17 years. Bring your own ideas to the table, be creative, be involved and be active and engaged in the affairs of your own country and people.

Last but not least, one thing that I am vehemently opposed to is; cobbling up unity between the armed factions that are opposed to the idea of a united Ethiopia and are just bidding their time, waiting for an opportunity to break up the country, like EPLF and TPLF did earlier. If the current quintet is contemplating such folly, may God have mercy on Ethiopia and may history have mercy on their names.

1 . woyane is realy not the kind of govt that most ethiopians seek it this 21st c.
    2. he may not change, even after another 15 years ,his political style. he will keep on telling the poor false but nither the people nor he himself do not belive that for ever.
    3. there will be more politiac member who will enjoy the benefit ,while the mass suffer.
3 there will be more race division (ethnic division) than ever before b/c the economy is getting worse and those who belong to the rulling party are beneficieris.
    4. the mass wants change and the change which CUD was telling them is what people wants to hear it about.
    5. that is why everyone belives in the party CUD.
    6. as far as i know ,the former CUD made the people hopless but and TPLF hopfull.
    7. the CUD leaders from all sides are saying mine is right others are wrong.
    8. we are confused , b/c we were hoping those educated leaders to solve the ethiopian problem , but not to creat minor problem and make bigger end.
    9. they are not showing as the idea of working together by solving party problem .
    10. they are 100 or 200 in number or lets say 10 each side , but the cant avoide thier ideology difference and bring together the people to work for one end.
    11. but they were telling us to unify the 85 mill population of ethiopa.
    12. now since that is a history they are creating another divisive factor war.

I feel very sorry when some of the very stars of Kinijit who made relentless stuggle leave Kinijit’s galaxi, one after the other. It is Weyane’s pleasure and victory and a retreat to the people, at list for this short time. But I still have hope that both Kinijit/UDJ and Dr.Brihanu’s fuction will negotiate to work together. I have a lot of respect for Dr. B. I trust he possesses superior intelect and great political instinct. My dream for Ethiopia of the future is peace and prosperity for the people of Ethiopia. It is my dream that there will be a rule of law, a peaceful transfer of power, term limits and government by the people and for the people. I am hopeful that Dr. Berhanu and company use their talents to mobilize freedom loving Ethiopians.

I am also hopeful that the Ethiopian ruling party comes to its senses to open up space for the opposition. I often visit government friendly web sites as well as dianspora opposition site. The frustration and the determination by many Ethiopian to opt for armed struggle is the result of the ruling party’s unwillingness to open up the political space.

As far as the peaceful struggle is concerned I think our leaders have tried all they could to bring the change that our nation needs. But it was not possible as there has never been a smooth play ground for them to continue with the peaceful struggle. I think as much as most of us do not like to go this way, I think it is a high time to face the real political situation that our country is in and support our true leaders like Dr Birhanu in the struggle.

EPRDF will never leave office through peaceful struggle unless one we speak to them with the language they do understand. That is an arm struggle. They are very fool to think that they will be able to held the entire nation captive forever.

Unity will hasten the fall of woyane, but if we are divided along political, ideological and ethnic lines as we are today we would forever be at the mercy of woyane and its masters.
