ADDIS ABABA (AFP) — A coalition of Eritrean opposition groups elected a chairman over the weekend, ending a long-running leadership dispute that had crippled efforts to topple the Asmara regime, officials said Sunday.
The Eritrean Democratic Alliance (EDA), made up of 13 opposition groups, elected Tewolde Gebreselassie as its new leader on Saturday in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
“Following agreements reached among members, we will now be able to step up our efforts against the government in Eritrea,” Tewolde told a press conference Sunday.
“We will enhance our activities on the diplomatic front as well as holding demonstrations and propaganda (campaigns).”
The EDA had failed to elect a new leader during last year’s conference in Addis Ababa because of tribal rivalry.
The coalition is also hoping to strengthen ties with Eritrea’s large diaspora, which is nearly the same size as the entire population at home.
The Eritrean government relies heavily on the hundreds of millions of dollars in remittances it receives each year as budgetary support from its citizens abroad.
“The diaspora has urged us for a different outcome. They are against (President) Issaias (Afeworki) but they aren’t with us because of our differences,” Noor Idris, head of an opposition party, told AFP.
“They are seeking our unity because the tyranny there is committing abuses,” he added.
Mohammed Noor Ahmed, another opposition official, added: “If we can mobilise our people, there will surely be uprisings. The Eritrean people definitely want to overthrow the government because of its violations.”
Only a few of the group’s members have armed wings to face Issaias’ 300,000-strong army, but they claim to have carried out sporadic hit-and-run attacks inside Eritrea.
Their leaders admit to receiving support from Ethiopia, Eritrea’s arch-rival.
Authorities in Asmara generally charge that opposition movements meeting in Ethiopia have no legitimacy and are nothing more than stooges of the regime in Addis Ababa.

woyane is smart. It is able uniting 13 different parties under one umbrella. While Issayas is playing dirty games against the Ethiopian oppositions. We know to the very detail what Issayas was/ and still is doing against the Ethiopian oppositions.
There are more than hundred thousands Ethiopians living in Eritrean mainly those beloved Ethiopians illegally and inhumanly deported by woyane in the name of Eritrean Origin. If Issayas was fair and doing the right thing, those Ethiopians living in Eritrea and massive support from Diaspora and Ethiopians in the country, by now could have already freed their country from the woyane criminals. By now all deported Eritrean would return back home and get their right and property back. But Issayas was/is playing disrupting and unfair games to weaken the opposition while assisting them for support.
For this reason, I give credit to the woyane gangs in their effort to topple issayas that his eminent ending time is approaching faster this or that way.

I don't see how regionalists, tribalists and Islamists can succeed in removing a truly nationalist Eritrean government. But, let them try and I guess they will find out the hard way. Come to think of it, those cowards and sellouts do not have the courage or a brain sell to do anything except to be subservient to foreign forces. But, I have news for them, Jendai Frazer ass is no longer available for them to kiss, for she will be out of the picture soon. God riddance, she has done so mach damage to the people of the Horn!

This got to be the biggest joke of the year.Please stop playing with the name of Eritrea. i bet the majority of these so called 'oppositions" are tigrayans pretending to be eritreans and the rest are weyane hired warmongers. Meles's puppet government deported 80,000 innocent citizens who happened to have an eritrean background from ethiopia, the majority of the deportee didn't speak any of eritrea's languages and had never been to Eritrea before their deportation.Meles also deported Eritrean women who were married and had children with ethiopian men. so it's impossible to believe that these'opposition" thugs are anything other than meles's closest relatives.

No Eritrean takes these losers put together by Melles seriously, they have no base of support anywhere, they are shunned by Eritreans in the diaspora and have no support whatsoever inside Eritrea, if Woyanne manages to arm these old losers (they all live in Europe the middle east and America, so they won't carry any weapons in the field) the Eritrean people will be happy to finish them off once and for all in short order. This "unity conference" they just concluded is nothing but a propaganda ploy by Woyanne, Melles knows these losers don't have the capacity to make any difference, he is just using them to extract more money from his masters in the west, these bogus opposition figures and Melles are all after the left over donations they get from their western masters, that is why Eritrea doesn't take them seriously.
