‘Time to whip Ethiopian Review into shape’ (Ethiomedia)

June 22nd, 2008 |  |  251 Comments

Hopefully Ethiomedia doesn’t mind the re-posting of its article about Ethiopian Review here >>

ETHIOMEDIA EDITOR’S NOTE – Ethiomedia has received articles that seriously criticize Elias Kifle, editor of Ethiopian Review, over his remarks that have increasingly become unethical, irresponsible and destructive to the interests and aspirations of Ethiopians. Elias, who is perhaps the only person running towards Eritrea at a time when Eritreans are fleeing in every possible direction to save their lives, has brought himself under fire. We hope the editor, who has been generous in attacking others whose ideas don’t agree with his, would be careful enough to accept criticisms with grace, and learn a lesson or two. Following is a commentary by Ephrem Madebo:

“Never kill them before they grow”
By Ephrem Madebo

“Every time I plant a seed, he said kill them before they grow.” This is a living lyric from the late vibrant Reggae star, Bob Marley’s classic – “I shot the Sheriff.” If Marley were alive today, I am sure he would have sung another song with the same lyrics to the likes of Ethiopian Review editor who, like a bad tagboat, throws away every new idea that he doesn’t agree with.

I had a close association with the ER editor years ago in the heydays of “Tegbar League.” In fact, I joined the “Tegbar League” group discussion forum at the request of the moderator (the ER editor), and I was expelled when I openly criticized Lidetu Ayalew for his 2002 crude action. Mind you the ER editor is the very person that blames Meles Zenawi for muffling the free press, but he himself didn’t even think twice before he silenced me in his little world. What a hypocrisy! Regardless of the nature of the ideas, I usually keep small ideas at the personal level. This week after I read two indiscriminately misguiding articles on Ethiopian Review website, I decided to go public because I thought total silence does not do any good to the public.

Towards the end of last week, I read an article on Ethiopian Review that brought to light a covert negotiation between OLF and Ginbot 7. The article inadvertently reveals a possible political breakthrough that has the potential to change the course of history in Ethiopia. If the information that came to light is authentic, I applaud the investigative cleverness of the ER sources for digging deep and informing the public on what is to come, I also appreciate their effort in trying to directly or indirectly put pressure on the leaders of the opposition camp. Here is the part that I totally disagreed and demanded an explanation. For those of you who didn’t have the chance to read ER’s article on the clandestine meeting of Ginbot 7 and OLF, here is the warning of the ER editor to the two organizations [OLF, Ginbot 7] and to the rest of us:

“ER sources in both Ginbot 7 and OLF are not ready to disclose where the secret talks are being held, but for maximum political effect, any agreement that they reach needs to be signed in Asmara. Any one who doubts the significant role the Eritrean government can play in destroying Woyanne is either politically ignorant, or a closet Woyanne sympathizer, or does not fully comprehend the severity of the crisis our country is facing.”

I’m not sure whether the editor is acting from his inner feeling, or out of his imagination, but at least I do understand that when people act under the influence of imagination, there is no boundary for their passion. Imagination is the formation of a mental image of something that is not perceived as real and is not present to the senses. It is good to allow the image of the outside world have an input in our way of thinking, scheming, contriving, remembering, creating, fantasizing, and forming opinion, but we must understand that politics and everything we do must be accompanied by passion and driven by principle because too much imagination kills both principle and passion.

I wonder what in the “Hell” Asmara has to do with the likely outcome of political events in Ethiopia. Isn’t Asmara the home of Esayas Afewerke, a man who never sleeps before he makes sure that Ethiopia is reduced to multiple mini states? Had there been an inch thick of a heart that worries for Ethiopia under the chest of Essays, Asmara wouldn’t have opened its door for separatist elements that fight to dismantle Ethiopia, and for EPPF; an organization that firmly stands for the unity of Ethiopia. If there is anything that the opposition gets from Asmara today, it will definitely be paid back at an exorbitantly high price tomorrow. The question of Assab, Bademe, Tsorena, and other border areas that I can’t even name are issues that face the current opposition in the future when it assumes power. If we believe that Esayas is willing to raise a lion that may ultimately devour him, we’re not just lying through our teeth, but we are also simplifying very complex national issues.

Another very important issue that the Ethiopian Review editor must understand is that we Ethiopians can respectfully disagree with him in many issues without he calling us “politically ignorant, or Woyanne sympathizers.” As an editor, he must strike the balance between the flow of ideas and the interest of the public. An editor must appreciate dissent and accept criticism. By the way, isn’t the very essence of our struggle built on the values of respectful disagreement and on the principles of working together for a common cause? When an editor seeks freedom of speech for himself, he/she becomes captive of his/her desire and misguides millions of people. But, when an editor seeks discipline, he/she guides the freedom journey of the masses to victory. The era of blanket condemnation and character assassination is over. Editors, or readers, what we do and what we say should clearly identify on which part of the isle we stand. Here is a script from ER editor’s message this week:

“Let’s go straight to the crux of the matter: UDJ by its actions and positions had demonstrated itself to be a political party without a popular base. It is a fake party without popular constituency.”

How do we measure the popularity of political parties? What makes some parties real and others fake? I might not give you the answer for these two questions, but I can at least say the following: The ER editor has neither the moral background nor the empirical authenticity to publicly declare that UDJ is a fake party with no political constituency. How dare a man who like me enjoys burgers at the comfort of a “drive-in,” calls UDJ a fake party with no political constituency? Which constituency are we talking here? Isn’t UDJ a party that collected more than 10,000 signatures in few days when the government required 1500? Isn’t Bertukuan a lady who with no fear confronted Zenawi’s wicked legal system in her professional life? Didn’t this same relentless defender of democracy waste two years of her precious young life in Kaliti prison for our common cause? Regardless of their choice of strategy, Bertukan and other members of UDJ have demonstrated their undeterred will to endlessly stand for the true cause of democracy.

There are many people in Ethiopia who preferred to live a quiet life to confronting Meles. Again there are many of us who raced out to the Western world because Meles screamed at us. Members of UDJ are still in Ethiopia knowing that they might be targets of Zenawi’s killing squads. These people need support and protection, not abuse and senseless mortification. UDJ has taken its first step; let’s give them the necessary time and support to have them show us the whole staircase. If we have no patience of looking deep into the future, then we need to take a lesson from the biblical story of Noah. Remember, there was no rain when Noah built the ark. He built it anyways when others ridiculed him because he had a good vision of the future. Criticizing our political parties is the right thing to do, but killing them before they grow is wrong. There are many things that we can do to collectively get closer to victory. If anything else, please let’s avoid any feeling of bitterness towards others because bitterness is a cancer that eats upon the host.

Evidently, the proliferation of political parties has a tendency to water down the strength of the opposition camp, but this does not and should not imply that we as a nation should be limited to one party. Even if we believe in the idea of one party, we just don’t have to kill existing parties when we embrace new comers. Our belief is ours and ours only; we can sell it to others, but we must not impose our belief on the general public. UDJ has chosen to stay inside Ethiopia and wage a peaceful struggle. To those of us who have a different strategy, UDJ can be our good ally inside Ethiopia. Some of us might not want to have UDJ as an ally, so be it; but this doesn’t mean that UDJ is our enemy. We must make a distinction between a friend, a potential friend, and a foe. In politics, there is neither permanent alliance nor permanent animosity.

Elias, You are a rogued Amiche, a stupid Eritrean more than Meles Zenawi himself, who should be hanged downwards when the final judgment day arrives after the inevitable resurrection of the country and people that you hate, Ethiopia and Ethiopians respectively. I promise that the final moments will be time that you would have loved to remember if Ethiopians hadn’t had said the call to end your wasteful existence in this world, a death party with your Eritrean comrades of Esayas, Meles and the distraught naughty boy, you. You must pay a heavy price for the crimes you have committed against the noble people of Ethiopia and their mother country Abyssinia.

Elias ignore the ignorants, ignore the racists and keep doing the wonderful job exposing the racist TPLF regime. Most of your opponents hate you because they are truly sympathizers of TPLF and work for TPLF as undercover. You love the truth and are independent thinker, that many of us admire so much! Keep doing what you have always been doing. Once again, IGNORE THE RACISTS.

Here we go again. Our newly found “Ethiopians”, the ***-based website of Ayte Abraha Belay, found it fit to attempt to silence, in my opinion, the ONLY reasonable Ethiopian website and nationalist Ethiopian journalist, Ato Elias kifle! Normally, I would’ve stated “Shame on you” Abraha Belay. But the guy does not have any feeling of shame except to present himself, these days, as more Ethiopian than the Ethiopians themselves. Hey, Mr. “Ethiopian”, now you pretend to be against your once idol, Ayte Meles wushetam, when you realized that Eritrea would never allow you to have your hilmi “Abay Tigray” materialize! I don’t think that will ever happen with or without Isaias.

You confused Tigreans have done everything evil that you possible could, to convince the rest of Ethiopians that they would get Aseb once ShaEbya is defeated. Far from it you bunch of liars! The Ethiopian people may suffer from fratricidal division among some of them, and may even slow to understand your shifta treachery, but they are not stupid and they are catching up for they know very well what your plan was — and still is — as far as I am concerned. To have your Abay Tigray access to the sea — that is what your plan was, not “Ethiopia’s access” as you conveniently state. Just look how stupid and silly you are, yes, just take a look at your imaginary and day time halucination map: http://www.ethiomedia.com/mission_statement.html

So who are you going to hoodwink by suggesting that some respectable website be “Whipped” in shape. Well, as they say, TALK IS CHEAP.

I wish there were more of the type of Elias that would work for some LOGICAL solution for the predicament we ALL find ourselves because of your hlmi “Abay Tigray” miscalculation.

  14. Weyni says:

Weyane web sites, always, attack Ethiopian Review. No surprise here.
Web sites like Aiga, openly, support Weyane and attack opposition figures, specially the heavy weights, like Elias.
EthioMedia is no different than Aiga. The only difference is Aiga does it openly and EthioMedia does its job under-cover, at night, in the dark.

I am going to give the readers, a hard evidence that the guy (Abreha Belay) is a Weyane trying to pass as an opposition.
This will convince if there is any body who doubts he is nothing but a Weyane decoy.

    So, here we go:
Do you all remember when Jeffery Gettleman, a journalist from the New York Times with two colleagues, was expelled from Ethiopia, way back in 2007? Of course, you do, it was all over the media.

At that time every international and Ethiopian medias condemned Weyane for their action.
Weyane tried to justify as to why they were explled and all Weyane medias – Walta, Aiga, ETV, Fana…etc were running/reading one and the same article that was prepared by Seyoum Mesfin (Weyane’s foreign ministry).

Weyane knows that not many Ethiopians follow their Medias and those who follow them, do not trust them.

So, Weyane had to post that in an “opposition” web site.
Now, guess what? Abraha Belay, the Tigrayan web master, posted that same article from Aiga and Walta.

    Here is the article:
    http://www.ethiomedia.com/atop/seyoum_mesfin_on_jeffrey_gettleman.html

Mind you, Abraha Belay did not get the article from Aiga or Walta. It was, directly, e-mailed to him from Seyoum. Yes, it was mailed to him from Seyoum, directly, because he said that, in his editorial, at the begining of the article.

Now, ask your self, will any Ethiopian opposition post such an article? NO
Will any Ethiopian opposition post an article that, falsely, exonerates Weyane and, wrongly, attacks foreign journalists who expose Weyane? NO
Would, Ethiopian Review, Abugida, EMF, AbayMedia…etc post such an article? NO

If that is not bad enough, would Seyoum Mesfin send an article to any Ethiopian opposition web site? NO
Would Seyoum Mesfin send an article to be posted on Ethiopian Review, Abugida, EMF…? NO

But Seyoum Mesfin sent his Article to Abraha Belay because he is one of them – a Weyane. Period. Arat netb ::

Do we get surprised if Aiga attacks ER? NO
So, why should we get surprised if Ethiomedia does?

Abraha Belay has been hiding him self, for long, but now he is coming out, publicly, for what he is – a Weyane.

  18. Ewnetu Ashebir says:

As far as I know Abreha Belai of Ethiomedia is a ‘closet Woyane’. For those of us who are critical thinkers, it is very easy to understand his perspective on the political situation in Ethiopia. Abreha Belai is against Meles Zenawi, Sebhat Nega, Bereket Semon and other Woyane leaders because they have a drop of ‘Eritrean blood’ and not because of the oppressive policies of TPLF, which they lead.

As a Tigre Abreha Belai has no problem with TPLF minus the individuals in the leadership with a drop of ‘Eritrean blood’. From speeches he has made, interviews he has given and his writings one can discern that he has a deep seated hatred for all Eritreans. I don’t know the reason, but I suspect that there is something personal that is triggering this hatred. Abreha Belai has never called for the removal of the TPLF oppressive machinery from power and its replacement by a democratically elected government. I know he has been paying lip service to the cause of democracy to camouflage his support for TPLF.

On the other hand Elias’s pragmatic position is based on the understanding that Eritreans are not our enemies. They could be partners in the fight against the TPLF oppressive machinery that has imposed fascistic rule over Ethiopians. I, for one, support Elias’s position for the simple reason that it is the only way to get rid of the TPLF machinery which Abreha Belai supports.

    Thank you.

Ay Abraha. Three articles in one day all attacking Ethiopian Review! That only shows your desperation, and it is going to backfire on you big time. Yes it may be argued that Elias was a bit too harsh on Birtukan. Time will tell if she deserved Elias’s stinging criticism. But com’n Abrha. Give me a break now! You have no moral ground to stand on and criticize or condemn Elias. Where were you when your EPRP buddies jumped all over Wzt. Birtukan last year? Why didn’t you write then: “Time to whip EPRP into shape”? You were silent. You are being so disingenuous. It is obvious that you went after Ethiopian Review because Elias told your hero Seye Abraha: “either ask the people of Ethiopia an apology for your crimes, or get lost.” That is your real motive in attacking Elias in such a desperate way (3 anti-Elias articles in one day. OMG! That is an overkill). Not because of your concern for UDJ. Please do not insult your readers’ intelligence. It has been obvious for a long time your mission is to replace one Woyanne (Meles) with another criminal Woyanne (Seye). So stop preaching to us about Isayas being a dictator and all that crap. Isayas stands for Eritrea’s interest. Seye stands for Tigray interest. If it comes to choosing between the two, I choose Isayas over Seye any time, because Isayas has shown himself to be a man of his words.

Did ER unnecessarily fan the flames of division among the opposition? Yes, it did.
IS the politics of the editor of ER juvenile? It is.
Why is Abraha Belay concerned about ER political leanings now?

Abraha doesn’t care what happens in Ethiopia or what is better for Ethiopia What he wants to see more than anything else is Eritrea destroyed and and Esayas buried.
And, in this respect, that is politics of ‘CHifininet’ and revenge Abraha stand is no different from the woyane organization he left some time ago.

Guys, whether you support Elias or not, Please Let us not use racial terms. The more racial we are, the higher the possibility that we’re helping Meles divide our own country. Let’s learn to use the term ‘Ethiopiawi’, than racial names. If we are preaching One Ethiopia, let’s stick with our words. Bottom line, let’s not attack one small ethnic group and help woyane stay in power. We all need to be together to get rid of this tyrant.
Elias, I have always been your critic in terms of your Eriteria (Shabia) related opinions. I can tell you that Shabia is the one who is responsible for what is happening in Ethiopia. We don’t need to invite them to finish their job. The problem we are having currently is that we are being ruled by anti Ethiopian Party called EPRDF(Woyane). We need to stick together and force our way to end this regime. We have One and only one Enemy (woyane). Please let’s stop attacking one another and rather support every legitimate cause. I believe that is what we see on Ethio media about ER. Ethio media, despite a few criticism I see above, it has been the most dependable website in terms of holding a greater journalistic standard. Abraha may have things to improve, but at least he is not insulting ER at this point. Instead, he is passing some messages that can give Elias a great deal of lesson and advice.
Elias Please consider this very wisely and reshape your thoughts. You’ll gain your name back by doing so. After all, we all now that you can’t wait to see the end of Woyane. We all have the same destiny. However, if you listen what you’re being told, you would be considered as someone who respects his audience. Above all, you’ll prove that you are not Ego centric person.

I have been writing to Mr Elias to take time and study the existing socio, economic and political situation in Ethiopia.
The problem of Elias emanated from his lack of understanding Ethiopian politics, that is why he considered all Ethiopian soldiers in somalia as woyanes and trilled when they get killed by somalis. The fact is that Many Ethiopians choose to be a soldier to feed their families and themselves, however in the eye of Mr Elias who live in USA comfortably and have no idea how it is like going to bed with out food, this is being Woyane. please Elias try to do some research about the existing socio-Economic conditions in Ethiopia.

Ethiopian media is one of my favorite web site and I get an up date information ,BUT what ATO elias has posted last time about the newly coming party UDJP MADE CRAZY. true criticism based on facts is not only acceptable ,but also apperciatable. But it is too early and too far. When egoists and power mongers have already joined weyanes camp in the name of EX- KINIJIT, WE HAVE ONLY ONE ALTERNATIVE FOR OUR STRUGGLE FROM WITH IN ETHIOPIA. So ethiopian review should think twice before posting such a baseless and destructive articles. THE ARTICLE ON ETHI MEDIA IS BEING POSTED BY ATO EFREM MANDEBO , NOT BY ETHIO MEDIA EUDITOR.

All those that are mad at Elias are Woyanes or Woyane servants (Hodamoch)and the power hungry ‘anarchists.’

They all are coming out of their hiding places to bark at Elias like mad dogs.

The truth however is that they cannot silence Elias and those of us who support him.

I will repeat for the second time what I said earlier — ABREHA BELAI IS A WOYANE, who wants to see Woyane rule Ethiopia for eternity (if there is such a possibility.) He is a WOYANE who vouched for the innocence of his body SEYE ABREHA and said without any equivocation that SEYE ABREHA is competent to lead Ethiopia. This is a guy who wants to see this criminal to be the next Prime Minister of Ethiopia, where he himself could get a ministerial portfolio.

We Ethiopians are not gullible. We now know the enemies of Ethiopia who are living amidst us. We also know those Hodams and power hungry ‘anarchists’, who do not have the interest of the Ethiopian people at heart. Abreha Belay and his co-horts like Ephrem Madebo are selfish individuals who care more about their own interest than that of the the interest of the people of Ethiopia. We will expose and fight these people as part of the concerted struggle we will be waging to liberate our country from the fascist Woyane.

I agree with some of the contents of the article and it’s a kind of smooth advice for your struggle not to make a bold mistake that will lead you to be apart from your readers. I can say that take it positively and when all peoples tell you to accept some of the facts then you should get ready your self for a change.

The thing here is that Elias is mad off his own beliefs, he thinks that the only way to get triumph is via Struggle. Well, actually i agree to some extent that this is important to chase the wayanne regime and can be considered as main supportive struggle other than the one backed who peacfully fighting with the regime. It’s big shame to attack(to abuse as the author says) the UDJ memembers whom they wish to see the freedom of the nation. They are doing such kind of activity and this is not betrayal! What I seriously donot understand is ER’s connection to the Eritrean Government. The Isayas regime has time and again refused to be a good friend of Ethiopians and Ethiopiawinet. In my opinion they neither do like TPLF nor Ethiopiawinet. I am not sure whether “yetelate telat” principle works for us this time to consider friendship with the Isayas regime. They failed our patriotic EPPF and exactly copied the divide and rule policy of tplf; restructured and sliced the army into ethinic units and groups once they landed to Asmara. Unless Isayas and his regime openly support Ethiopiawinet and decide to co-exist in equality (to the extent of confederation or reunion with their ex-motherland) with one prosperous Ethiopia, it would be hard for me to accept anyone who shows a prejudice and die-hard support for the Isayas regime. The same is to you Mr. Elias, get out of your ego, to tell what to do for the UDJ people who sat amidst fire at home and forget to deceive the impossible association of Ethiopian freedom from the land of Asmara unless they free their mind of their hatred to Ethiopia. Its only then we can keep our support you. Why EthioMedia is campaigning against EthiopianReview.
This is a new trend of journalism within Ethiopian context.

Elias Kifle is a patriotic Ethiopian. No less no more. I personally critize him b/c I respect and sympathise him.
On the other hand the editor of Ethiomedia A. B have hearted Woyane, if you properly examine his Web site. He is more tigre than Ethiopian. This is the chronic problem of most little educated Tigres. This has tremendously affected the struggle for Ethiopia.
Any way, coming to the point to ally with Eritreans at this right moment is not a crime. It helps the struggle for democracy and national interest in Ethiopia.
today’s Eritrea has been part of Ethiopia. But the fact is the territory of Eritrea and its people are originally Ethiopians. The name Eritrea is a colonial name. BahriNegash
is the native name. As Ethiopian, we should not condemn Eritreans only because our relatives fell into the hands of colonialists. We should not forget it is part of our history.

Soon or later wth a fresh mindset and perseverance BahriNegash(Eritrea)will join Ethiopia.

Therefore if the struggle of Ethiopians is to abolish the bararic Woyane atrocities in Ethiopia we have have to ally with Eritrea. Woyane has collaborated with the Sudan. Our Land has been offerd to Sudan.
What are we waiting for while our people are fighting both woyane and Sudanon our Western border?

For us Ethiopians Eritrea closer to us and we are blood relatives.

Forget about the War for Badme. Badme remains Badme.

    Dear Editor and Readers,

I really appreciate the editor’s courage in posting the article. The basic idea in the article can be found in the majority of the comments on this very web site- just count the number of comments here asking the editor to tone down his criticism of UDJ.

Thus, let’s not waste other readers’ time by writing about the authors instead of their ideas. What you write about why someone has written something is irrelevant to the main idea being discussed here and speculative at best.

The question being addressed here is “Are the criticisms directed at UDJ recently on ER justified, factual and logical?” Let’s stick to this point.

When I see people vilified based on their views, I question our own belief in democracy because I know overthrowing Woyane wouldn’t translate into a democratic Ethiopia 60 seconds after that if we, the people, do not uphold the basic tenets of democracy such as what I mentioned before.

I would like to also remind you, the editor, of including the polling plug-in that I commented about the other day.

One need not be intimidated even for a second by the carefully planned desperate but cunning fox Wayane onslought on the Ethiopian struggle, however hidden and wrapped up with false and misleading wrapping paper, namely, Elias Kifle and the good and balaced Ethiopian Review, providing transparent and participative free forum for Ethiopians to make their voices heard.

Wayane’s devious plan is to rob the Ethiopian voices and use it for its own sole enslavement policy of minority dictatorship and sinful pathological war mongering against peaceful innocent people inside and outside.

That kind of medieval barbarism is exactly what cunning fox wayane have always been doing for the last 18 years.

That is to say, jailing, killing and banishing independent Ethiopian journalists just to suffocate the independent voices of the people and forcefully impose its enslaving minority dictatorship on the poor people increasing leaving on repeatitive international handouts that is shame deep down to the bones.

Add to this the repeat and complete suffocation and highjackings of nominal opposition groups in the country and using them for the advancement of the inhuman and impoverishing Wayane agendas.

What the dying desperados are trying to do is only a cheap plan of extending the domestic violence and domination to the international arenas by other means.

The task of the external opposition is not to sit and wait but partly to take the struggle straight in to the country to the Wayane’s door step and continousely take risks and challenge the outmoded and overstretched dictatorship.

No amount and types of intimidation and conspiracy should dumpen the flames of genuine struggle for justice, equality and democracy.

Ethiomedia may be a big lier wearing a big mask and a cunning external fox and Wayane’s remote control red button.

Its contention that its media is blocked in Ethiopia may not be taken seriousely. It may simply be a matter of behind the scene arrangement of convinience with the dictatorship just for the purpose of manipulating and outmanouvering of the diaspora Ethiopians and feeding them the dictator’s POISON pills wrapped up with a thin layer of sweet HONEY.

Like in this particular, the HONEY is generating hate for Eritrea that appears to be appealing to the traditional Ethiopian conservatives, while the POISON is sole Wayane dictatorship over Ethiopia and life extention for the soon dying minority overlordship.

The junk article being praised by all the hidden and public Wayane agents and fat cat cadres singing their standard swan songs is meant to obstruct and avoid the inevitable minority dictator’s rush to the bottom of the drain and to the end of the line.

The title of the article should have been more relevant if it read, ” Time to whip Ethiopian Review in to slave shape and capitulationism” instead of ‘Time to whip Ethiopian Review into shape’

But please, please don’t ask me as to what the shape of the slaves typically look like.

Just take a field trip to Ethiopia and see for yourself heart breaking shapes and conditions of the Ethiopian children, women, men and the youth.

After all, why should you believe your ears alone when you may combine the powers of your eyes and minds and keep to the truth contrary to the deep down fake cyber poison cake, called Ethiomedia.

Ethiomedia and his Tigrean moderator “Abraha Belay” are systematically dividing Ethiopians – needless to say attack ELIAS on behalf of Woyanes. Ephrem Madebo is just another version of Beyene Petros or “Abadula Gemeda or Kuma Demikssa”. Ethiomedia spent the last eight (8) months celebrating a woyane criminal by the name of “Siye Abraha” -Clearly we now know and most Ethiopians are realizing that Ethiomedia is the north American version of “Reporter” another Woyane mouthpiece!

ELIAS – Please continue doing what you do most – Speak the Truth – nothing but the truth. Oromos, Somalis, Woyanes, Gurages, Amaras including Eritreans understand why Ethiomedia (Reporter) and all the hired guns are attempting to character assassinate you. Despite the evil efforts of Meles, Ephrem, Getachew, Abraha Belay (WOYANNE) and the like those struggling for freedom and democracy (OLF, ONLF etc) will triumph at the end – Yes as an Oromo I ‘ll stand with Eritreans to destroy Woyanee – and this is the truth shared by most Oromos that I know!!!

Down with Woyane and Woyane agents!!!

Mr. Ephrem Madebo has given Mr. Elias a constructive criticism, but why on earth some of you start attacking Abraha Belay. Is it not because of Abraha Belay’s effort to launch ethiomedia that we all express our ideas, give constructive criticisms? what kind of tradition is this name calling and talking off the topic? Why don’t you people talk about the issue raised by Mr. Madebo? If you lack the gut and the knowledge to do so just say nothing and enjoy the information you get and learn something out of it. I have witnessed that Mr. Elias lacks detail for issues that he brings. I witnessed that, but I don’t call Mr. Elias shallow minded if I am unhappy for the content of his writing. At least he brings up issues for discussion and it may require our participation to bring up more info to the topic. When we are short of ideas, we start name calling others. Please stop name calling.

  80. Do you remember me? says:

Elias I am 100% with Mister Madebo you see if we fight among ourselves the TPLF will be the winner so Mister Elias please stop the infighting if you are worried for the country you claim is your concern. I am sure you are true Ethiopian however I do not agree your 100% trust of Esayas remember for all our pain it is Esayas and Shabia who brought These Tigrean Mafia as the same time do not forget that Esayas’s saying that he has given To Ethiopian people 100 years work for our distruction. So I have a hard time to think Esayas will help Ethiopia to be free, if Esayas and his click want to help us they would stop hellping other TPLF looklikes like OLF and other Tribal groups. Anyway I do not also believe Ethiomedia is also free of TPLF they just do not like they way TPLF is going for instance have you ever read when ethiomedia criticize the annex of Wolo and Gondar land I am 1000% any Tigrean will not object it so all those Tigreans who run here and there are not true Meles and TPLF haters rather they are different how TPLF have to be run. So please do not be stubborn rather take Mister Madebos article as a good idea from good and true Ethiopian for another true Ethiopian brother. By the way we may not need an outsider for us to fight TPLF we can fight from with in Ethiopia because when fought Italy we did not need an outsider to help us we fought them by taking their own weapon most of the time so if we fight TPLF and the Tigreans we can do the same thing. For instance we can have insiders in the TPLF military to inform our fighters the military movement of TPLF as well as we can get weapon from the TPLF military as the Somalians are doing, so we may not need Esayas and other helpers, because by introducing Esayas it will divide us so let us unite as you know victory begins from true everlasting unity.

Do not only rely on the advise made to you by those who seem to like your way , like for example when you say Kuma Demeksa DONKEY, they hailed you why? it reminds me of the same bad thing they did in the 1990′s when TPLF seize power some anti-Ethiopians made jokes on Oromos by their language and many more and made it to look like spoken by Amharas(mind you every one speaks Amharic even) so that even husband and wife were separated and some political organizations(even foreigners who seemed to be worried for Oromos) use it for propaganda to distablize Ethiopia. guys, i do agree with Madebo only on the point that Elias should not have used the expression that people who do not subscribe to his idea are either “politically ignorant, or Woyanne sympathizers.” This, although i believe true, makes him appear like a dictator – either with us or against us, fort of.

Aside from that, i think Elias’s idea is an excellent one. Woyane and Shabia are snakes and as the traditional/amharic adage goes ‘ebab le ebab yiteyayal be cab’. If we want to inflict max damage to TPLF, the best tactic is to use Shabia, if we are not politically ignorant (mind you this is different from elia’s usage. it is possible that we can be politically ignorant). I’m very well aware of the sad fact that shabia has done a lot to destroy Ethiopia. I believe, however, that it is a lesser monster to Ethiopia, even to Tigray, than TPLF. I understand Madebo’s and many other’s anger at the proposition but, as madebo himself concluded his piece, “in politics, there is neither permanent alliance nor permanent animosity”. So, in a sense, Madebo has, rather unknowingly subscribed to Elias’s idea. I also believe, Madebo should not have said re his previous engagement with Elias in this piece. That is un-necessary information in a way. It seems that he had/has some grudge with Elias and has been waiting to strike. This is the problem with most of us (Hailu Shawl, Birhanu Nega, etc included) that we make issues personal and rush to striving to fail the other, to the extent of forgetting the common enemy, and fail ourselves in the process. This is a sad fact we seem to be doing again and again like the poor hamster.

  105. Zenash says:

Well done Elias, don’t waste your time on replying for a decaying website by the name of Ethiomedia. We appreciate its Editor to come all the way long here, but the Ethiopian people now wants more than just news. It is taking its last breath. The sites popularity has gone down day by day and weak by weak. Once, it used to pride itself by saying the “numero uno-number one” Ethiopian alternative news source. That hey-day has gone with the emergence of vigorous and fresh news from ER. It looks like the Editor of Ethiomedia is attempting to lure readers to itself by using Elias and ER as culprits for the democratic process. But the fact is that, Ethiomedia’s hey day has gone as it is based on providing news while it should have concentrated on how to weaken TPLF and deny the support it needs to stay in power. News alone won’t bring changes. ER’s way of denying any support to TPLF is truly hurting the Meles Gangs and many soft diasporas who only believe on writing articles after articles to show their intellectuality and go to Ethiopia to invest or have a good time there while TPLF’s rule is killing Ethiopians in hunger, disease, conflicts etc.

There is also the issue of Eritrea. In my belief, Issayas and Eritreans can assist a lot on the removal of Meles from the power. I had argued numerous times on the question of “number one Enemy of Ethiopians at this time?”. And for a reasonable person who believes in facts, Meles and TPLF is the number one enemy of the Ethiopian nation. While time and space is not enough to list the TPLF crime against our people, the problem comes on how to remove it. Almost everyone agrees meles has to go. But how? These is the question many would have difficulty on answering it. It is a known fact that opposition movements can not operate from Sudan, Kenya, Somalia and Djibouti or land from the air by parachuting; which leaves Eritrea as the only option. And the leaders of Eritrea are open for Ethiopian oppositions to operate from their soil as TPLF is also their number one enemy and Threat for their existence. There fore the Ethiopian opposition and the Eritrean government can be partners because TPLF with the huge resources it stolen from starving Ethiopians and the money it gets from US will attempt to destroy both.

The other issue many Ethiopians fail to notice is that the existence of Issayas in Eritrea creates a balance and imagine if TPLF manages to remove Issayas from power, we will endure the slavery we have never seen in our history taking the only place we can exist as a genuine oppostion. Meles and Sebehat had made it clear that the reason they wouldn’t sign the Algiers agreement was to create their long dream of Abay-Tigray or Tigray-Tigrign empire encorporating the entire Tigray, Tigrigna-speaking Eritreans and fertile lands from northern Wollo and Northern Gondar making Mekelle their capital. Sebehat Nega’s interview last year is very indicative of such plan and almost 12 Eritrean opposition groups are stationed in Ethiopia to be puppets in Asmara after the war. For anyone who hasn’t read the book written by Meles and titled “Ye-Ertra Hizb Tigle keyt wedeyet”, the situation will look fuzzy. It is sad to see Ethiopians pay by blood fighting as front-liners and die in tens of thousands for the ego of Meles and the greatness of Tigrayans. TPLF wouldn’t want to cede Badme and Tserona since it believes it is the land of Tigrayans while it gives chunks of lands from Gondar, Gojjam an Wollega to Sudan. This shows that these gangs don’t really care for Ethiopians and that is why anyone who wants to work with them will be criticized and opposed openly as we saw the case of UDJ.

The articles that are posted on Ethiomedia about Elias rude behaviors reflects the feelings I have developed about ER. As a matter of fact, the articles have been past due because Elias has been out of the line for about a year now. His behaviors have been vulgar. Above all, his writings have been immature, discourteous, and offensive. For example, as if he is a strategic advisor to Ethiopian politicians with having the knowledge, the skills and the training he has been generously providing them boorish strategic and tactical advices. He has been insulting everybody who he does not agree with him. He tends to humiliate people that have different opinion than him.

It appears to me that, if he was a man of power he would not be different than Mengistu, Meles, or the Eritrean dictator.

Elias has been a negative element to struggle to liberate Ethiopians. I hope he will seriously consider reshaping his attitude and behavior, and attempt to be providing a fair media that reflects different ideas, and opinions than him. Above all, I hope he would stop using foul and vulgar languages. And I hope he would start respecting people.

Finally someone got the gut to say what we all feel about Elias. In my opinion, Elias always posts comments that support his point of views but if you disagree one bit, you will never see your comments on ER. i always new both ER and Ethiomedia are undercover suporters of the current governemnt. and i will not be surprised if someone decides to write the kind of article about ethiomedia. i remember reading all these articles about sihye abraha, how he sold our country, how he buchered so money ethiopians under meles zenawi which is absolutely true and he should be held accountable for his involvement. however, when he got out of the prison, he was presented to us as hero whose believes are far from his dictator friends, and he is a true ethiopian who is willing to sacrifice whatever it takes….so on. who was sayig all the good things about sihye, it was ETHIOMEDIA. A smear campaign and professional journalism

    ER Editor Elias Kifle

“Within democratic theory, there are two indispensable functions that journalism must serve in a self-governing society. First, the media system must provide a rigorous accounting of people in power and people who want to be in power, in both the public and private sector. This is known as the watchdog role. Second, the media system must provide reliable information and a wide range of informed opinions on the important social and political issues of the day.” – Robert W. McChesney (Journalism, Democracy, … and Class Struggle: Monthly review, V.52, N0.6)

As we all know, the Ethiopian Diaspora as the rest of the Diaspora population, is enjoying the freedom of speech this land of opportunity has given. Thus it is sharing political and economic information, news, different views on various subjects, and other community services. It has gotten the opportunity of having and using different media outlets including, but not limited to radio, television, internet, and community newspapers.

One of the many media outlets and one in the forefront is the Ethiopian Review. Thus, up until recently, I have been reading the writings and interviews of one individual here in the metropolitan area. The Editor and owner of Ethiopian Review, Mr. Elias Kilfe, was believed to be a strong advocate of human rights, democracy, justice and freedom in his home country. Thanks to the opportunity he got in this country, he has played, along with others, a vital role in organizing different grassroots movements especially during the difficult years of 2005-2006 when the entire democratic struggle in Ethiopia was crippled by dictator Meles. Thus, the website he runs has many visitors, regardless whether the published articles and news are serious enough. As mentioned above, most of us know that the editor is a strong opponent of the current repressive regime in Ethiopia.

However, the question is: Does this journalist/activist have the ability, profession, discipline, modesty, strength, and other necessary journalistic tools, as McChesney stated, to provide a rigorous accounting of people in power and people who want to be in power, in both the public and private sector and provide reliable information and a wide range of informed opinions on the important social and political issues of the day? The answer is just NO.

Then, the second question comes: Why do people read his articles or news reports? The answer could be just to get some sort of information about the current situation at home. Unfortunately, sensational subjects and rumors are also considered to be ‘news.’ The other reasons could be either due to lack of other means of information or due to lack of information about the existence of other means of getting news and information.

His commentaries had attracted genuine comments and some attacks in the past. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been seen correcting his mistakes. As a result, he has failed to defend the respected profession of jounalism on his side. His smear campaign against prominent figures, politicians, and fellow citizens that have different views from him, and uneducated analysis and commentaries on the country’s geopolitics have reached to the point where a decent comment is needed. Therefore, for readers’ further discussion on the role of the editor of ER and where he stands on various issues, and the impact of the website he runs, a few of his many controversial and divisive positions are presented below.

    * Any person or group that has different views and positions on the form, place, type, and time of the struggle for democracy and justice from his is labeled and becomes the primary target of his malicious attack. Please see the recent articles about the formation of UDJ and its leaders.
    * He flip-flops on many issues along with any emerging political movement.
    * His unwavering support for the other ‘Pinoche of Eritrea,’ Mr. Issayas Afewerki, who was the God father of the dictator in Ethiopia is manifested on many occasions. No one believes Essayas will be the reliable friend and neighbor of Ethiopia who loves to see a strong Ethiopia next door. Otherwise, he would not have fought for 30 years to separate the ancient and historical province, Bahre Negash (Eritrea) from Ethiopia.
    * His unsubstantiated support for ethnic-based armed struggle is so astounding that it does not seem that he has understood the consequence of it unless he has a dream of seeing a dismantled Ethiopia. Again, it should be clear that no form of atrocity and genocide is acceptable no matter which side did it. The argument is that the support that is (to be) given to ethnic-based oppositions that bear arms should be based on their strong position for the establishment of a democratic society in that country and on defending the territorial integrity of the country.
    * The soldiers that are killed in Somalia by the order of their brutal leader are called ‘woyane mercenaries,’ as if they are not sons and daughters of Ethiopia. He is extremely happy with their horrific death. The news he wrote about the headless bodies of the Ethiopian soldiers being dragged in the streets of Mogadishu was too clear he lacked the minimal sympathy for those poor Ethiopians who are obviously the victims of the enemies in power in Ethiopia. This position is similar to the position of TPLF that disarmed, dismantled and demoralized what was one of the most professional armies on the continent. The enemy regime has even sentenced members of the Black Eagle of the former Ethiopian Air Force pilots to death. What did they do other than obeying orders? Here, it should be clear that it doesn’t mean there were no specialized forces, who like ‘Agazi,’ were trained and equipped to harass, kidnap, torture, and kill citizens of the country.
    * Although we understand the situation of the country under mercenary Meles, Mr. Elias is obsessed with his own idea of having a government in exile, and now an opposition in exile. The question is, who is paying the utmost sacrifice at home? What are his historical and current references that justify his argument? Was Mandela in Europe when his country was liberated from apartheid? Is Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in exile when fighting for democracy in her country – Burma? Where is Morgan Tsyangirai of Zimbabwe?

What makes the above and other numerous observations that are not mentioned here more alarming and surprising is that Mr. Elias is positioning himself as an individual who is advocating for his people and the country he claims to be from. Why then he has no regard and decency to the people at home who are ready to give their lives and their supporters in the Diaspora? He is serving (whether knowingly or unknowingly) the current authoritarian and brutal dictator of Ethiopia by working hard in the smear campaign against true freedom fighters.

As McChesney said, “If there could be no dissident press, there could be no democracy.” But dissenting should not be staining and smudging the heroes and heroines of the country and engaging in dismantling democratic parties and movements that are founded with heavy price. As a final note, I say ‘Watch out Ginbot 7 Movement.’ Tomorrow you will be the next victim of Ethiopian Review’s smear campaign.

I used to be a regular visitor at this website. But having seen the invisible hand of Eritreans in the past, I never came here for over two years. I did so today because I saw the articles at Ethiomedia. For me, Ethiopia has one and only one enemy. In one word, Eritrea. That includes those that are masquerading as Ethiopians at arat kilo, Meles, Sebhat, Bereket, Samora etc. Therefore, I don’t give shit about this thing he used to work with Eritreans, he is Tigre, he is this and that. My enemy, the one that brought Mussolini’s ethnic bantustan to my country, the one that wiped the provinces off the face of the Earth, the one that tortures Ethiopians day and night is the Eritrean Meles Zenawi. Therefore, if Elias works with Eritreans, he is the enemy of Ethiopia, full stop.

    Folks,

All those genuinly working and dreaming for democracy and pluralism need not be distructed by the scared and desperate Wayane and its hidden stooge Ethiomedia.

The brayings of intentionally assembled online and offline hidden wayane cadres is only a sign of fear, weakness and panic due to the imminent and un avoidable soon coming demis of the TPLF dictatorship. Bush leaving office, Somali freedom fighters dayly flogging and butchering wayane invaders, Eritrea getting stronger and tronger, etc. causes life treatening phobic reactions for the dictator and its hords.

Their misplaced dumb mumbling is only temporary and is a sign of genuine great fear just like those of dictator Megistu’s panicy orphaned cadres’ during the dictator’s last days, or king Haile Sellassie’s self serving high ranking supporters whom Megistu have been skillfully collecting to the chicken cages in the last day’s of the king’s rule until the king himself was left alone completely naked.

This is what Melles is now trying to avoid by all means through willful strenthening of his hidden and public supporters by funding and agitating them to sing swan songs for dividing and weakening Ethiopians to stengthen Wayane minority dictatorship. This is the dictator’s party work among the masses.

we need to fight woyanne. not by worshping meles, not by giving our destiny, ethiopian destiny to him. for that we need to use every means,,,why not? if it is favourable to ethiopia, there is nothing wrong,if opposition parties open office in asmara. why not? remember,,,we are fighting for our life,, for our country…we have to see every angle. we shouldn’t be short sighted.

Those of you who still believe meles will hand you power by election…must be realy dreaming and living in fantasy. you need to sit down and think seriously. do not be day dreamers.why do you think meles cedes ethiopian land to sudan? the sudan government in turn will never allow any opposition struggle from their land. you see how further will he go.

Meles dreams go far beyond that, to invade Eritrea and removing Esaias and annointing there his own puppet, then woyanne can live happily ever after.

Don’t u see it. invading somalia, cedes land to sudan, djibuti is a piece of cake,, the only problem for woyanne is eritrea. so, my friends be wise..do not crucify if a person suggests may be it is a good strategy to work with eritrea to get rid of woyanne.

I beieve all of us to think and provide a better way to get rid of the brutal stallinest regime in ethiopia. please do not get mad at each other , get mad and really be angry to the regime that will never hear the peoples voice and will do anything to stay in power. if necessary will bring reign of terror like the 2005 massacre. please all of us, the ethiopian people lets unite and stand against the worst enemy of ethiopia ever seen in the history of the country, the meles dictatorial regime.

So who can now in his or her right mind question your contribution? Or deny you your well deserved and rightful place…. well in…what? I was going to say in the struggle of Ethiopians’ for freedom, democracy and the rule of law in their country?? Doesn’t that mischaracterize the nature of your fight?? Or instead let me ask you, do you see yourself anywhere there?
So why should I force you to fit in to some thing or belong to something for which you have nothing but disgust?? Isn’t it too naive for people to try to engage in that kind of struggle.
So may be yours fall in the category of Ethiopians’ fight to reclaim their country. This is a fight against the Woyane which allows any thing and any means. I think what you are doing is best described when put with in that context.

I some times wonder what people like you would be doing if by some twist of miracle Ethiopia becomes a country where there will be a rule of law and democracy and where every body has to leave by the fruit of there labour.
And so that you know, some thing is beyond your comprehension or even beyond your capacity of what is with in the limit of the imaginable doesn’t mean it is ideal and not worth fighting for.
Even if it is not attainable for some of us fighting for it is the only way we acertian our humanity.

Thus, not only did Ethiomedia exemplified cowardice but also linked to a blog of pretense. As much as I may have an issue or two about Elias’ articles, more so with his intensity & timing than with content, he at least, unlike Enset, does not pretend to be what he is not.

  140. Dagne says:

Elias’s suggestion to work with Eritria to bring down the one tribe TPLF rule in Ethiopia is not a bad idea by itself. It doesn’t also automatically make him an Eritrian undercover either. Elias’s pragmatic approach and recommendations in bringing down the child killer TPLF governemnt needs to appreciated and researched very well. As the woyane junta is not willing to abide by the rules of free and fair election, I personally consider the cooperation of Ethiopian and Eritrian forces to fight the tribalist Woyane government as one real possiblity. I commend Elias for propossing this practical idea boldly and bravely.

My problem is the current reality on the ground. Issayas and Eritrians in general didn’t seem to show any change towards the old plan of dismantling Ethiopia in ethnic enclaves. For example,

    1. Why is Issayas still organizing tribal armies (Tigrai Army, Gambela Army etc) still today, to fight Meles Zenawi, instead of trying to put them in to one “Ethiopian Army”?

    2. Why are woyane’s deserting army troops that cross to Eritria are encouraged to join ethnic tribal armies?

What is the Eritrian plan for Ethiopia here? Do they think we are stupid or what? Just beacuse we oppose Meles’s one tribe TPLF rule doesn’t mean that we want our country to be dismantled or Somalialized.

If Issayas (and other Eritrians) want a geniune cooperation and a long lasting peace between the two brotherly people, they need to stop the “cat and mouse” game! We don’t want any surprises anymore! At the minimum, ERitria should help to put all ethnic armies that fight TPLF’s rule under one “Ethiopian Army”.

That Ethiopian Army should be called ELA or (Ethiopian Liberation Army)or something simillar! All army deserters from the current Woyane army who cross to Eritria should join only this army-the Ethiopian Army. They shouldn’t be forced to join their ethnic armies as is now being done by Eritria. We have to see these changes from Eritria before we support any kind of cooperation.

Finally my advise to Elias, take the constructive comments from the article and try to refrain from attacking individuals when they have different views from yours. But continue your independent thinking. I like it as many people do. Continue critsizing the policies of political parties as you always do. Also becareful when you recommend Eritrian cooperation with Ethiopian oppostion parties. Do a serious thinking and research first. Think about the points I raised above as they are issues for many Ethiopians.

You also have to be brave to tell Eritrians to change their long-held attitude towards our country. They must stop organizing gureilla fighters through ethnic armies. If they want geniune cooperation from their Ethiopian brothers, they have to help us to form one “Ethiopian Liberation Army”. All ethnic armies must be disolved and disbanned and their troops should come under one “Ethiopian Army” with the Ethiopian flag. That will be a litimus test for geniune Eritrian/Ethiopian cooperation.

Ethnic armies are dangerous and must be stopped. Look what happned in the former army of “Yugozlavia”. Elias, honestly, you are too quiet on this issue, and we don’t see you much critisizing these Eritrian policies! The future crediblity of your recommendations will very much depend on your boldness to tell the truth for all parties including the Eritrians!

In my mind, have no doubt that most of the people who’ve posted the comments that attacked Ethiomedia are written by Ertreans. Why I say that? Because it was, is and will be their dream to see a crippled Ethiopia. So “their country” would become pwowerful and infulential in the horn region. It’s their night mare to see us united. So what they have to do is, carry out their mission, pretending as being one of us, pretending as being a concerned and geniune Ethiopians. I mean, there is nothing wrong in wishing all the best for one’s motherland, but the problem I have is, it shouldn’t be at the expense of others, like Ethiopians.I have a lot of Ertrean friends; every time we engaged in any kind of political discussion, implicitly or explicitly, they’ve exhibited that for me. I observed this trend in most if not all. If I’m right, the underlying article was written by Mr. Madebo, so why are some people attacking the website editor? The only explanation is, those who does not like to see us united, those who does not want to see great Ethiopia a reality, those who anxious to see a failing Ethiopia,…use this opportunity to weanken us more. They do that by dividing us. As the famous Ethiopian song goes: Der beeyiaber, anbessa yasir. We should all remeber how excited they were after Elias’s stunning comment on Eritrea during his recent interview with ETN. After all, we Ethiopians should ask ourselves one important qustion; why are Ertreans commenting and participating in Ethiopian discussion sites, like this one, unless they have some kind of mission or interst, when they claim to have free and independent country. As to me, they should not. Watch out these sneaky Eritreans!!!

Didn’t Seye abraha the one that led TPLF and masacred and looted our people from tekeze to Moyale? Now once again ethiomedia is preparing him for another round crime. The successive regimes that took power in Ethiopia have never represented the true essence of what it means to be Ethiopian. As a young Eritrean I was very aware of the difference between ordinary Ethiopians and their brutal rulers. I am a witness to this genuine relationship of Eitreans and thiopians for I lived among Ethiopians for years. I also witnessed first hand the help extended by Ethiopians to Eritreans during weyane’s callous decision to deport Eritreans from Ethiopia.
Now we have come full circle; where it is now time for us to extend our resources and help the suffering brothers in Ethiopia under the weyane junta leadership of zenawi.
We understand your trying times as we were the first victims of the devastation caused by meles and co-horts.
Eritrea is in the best position to assist Ethiopians overcome this cancer of the horn who will not stop at anything to guarantee its stay in power.
Elias, I am hoping you will embed this video I made for all my friends I grew up with in Ethiopia. I was reminiscing all the fond memories that I carry of people and a place I called home:

I just wanted to say that since there alternative means to achieve desired goals, let us avoid attacking the wrong people. If UDJ’s understanding of peaceful struggle differs from our (your) view, YOU SHOULD let them go their way and you continue you chore for the end game, which I believe is to replace Woyanne by leaders from the people, by the people and to the people. We do net have to attack others in order to show our importance.

This is a much deserved criticism of your cavalier attitude towards journalism in general and Ethiopian politics in particular. If you ever thought that people flock to ER for edification by the ill conceived and shallow minded views and analysis of its editor, you are more of a fool that I thought. Let me tell you, most people come here for the timely aggregated news and your alleged investigative reporting (dirt digging) and nothing else.

Therefore it is incumbent upon you to invest more of your time in what you are good at and less on opining nonsense about lady liberties turned traitors and golden carriages and golden shoes turned into bumpkins and mice at midnight.

A blind spot for all Ethiopians.

To start with, Why does TPLF want to talk with Eritrea before formal demarcation takes place? As A/S of State for Foreign Affairs Jendyai Fraiser and others clearly admitted that TPLF want to close every opposition group office in Asmara, ie OLF in return TPLF will implement the agreement. Condaliza Rice called and many others but the president of Eritrea didn’t want to talk because he knows what they want: to prolong the life of TPLF. So, do you guys happen to think what happens if Eritrea and TPLF get along. Where does it take the Ethiopian opposition group. Eritrea is doing a great favor for Ethiopians by not signing the deal. but we are to hatefull to see the truth. as time runs out they might get together and we will not see the light of freedom for decades to come. Sibhate Nega is crying like a baby to make peace with Shaebia. We dont have time, enough snoozing.

Elias has been playing a highly unintentional negative roll on the Diaspora politics. I believe he caused significant damages on Ethiopian struggle. For example, during the split of Kinijit several times he poured cold water on the Ethiopian struggle; as a result, he made people feel sad and made them wonder about the behaviors of most Ethiopians.

Although one of the trade marks of Ethiopians characteristics is their respect for their elders, Elias publicly has been tearing apart people of all ages including elders.

Hopefully this article and the people comments that are related with this article would give him some ideas about what have been thinking about him.

  161. Ewnetu Tessema says:

After reading both Madebo’s and Tesfaye maru’s comments and analayzing the previous services of Ethiomedia and ER I have to say this:
    1. Both Madebo and Tesfaye’s comments do nto really provide any meanigful solutions to the quagmire that we are in even though Tesfaye has been more reasonable in addresseing the issue of supporting the UDJ in trying to do what they can under the circumstances.
    2. Ethiomedia and ER both served Ethiopians in providing information to theEthiopian diaspora, especially after the 2005 end of the wey’ aane’ era but one can not deny that they also have their own perogatives and looking at things, one being sympathatic to tigran weyanes and the other to eritreans, which has been reflected in their choice of words and/or type of articles/issues they present. However under the circumstances Ethiopia is in now they are the choices we have unless we come up with bettermediums that really recognize Ethiopian Andenet and Ethiopiawenet. In saying this I am not indicating that Abraha or Elias are less Ethipians than any of us but they are part of the bigger Ethiopian picture that we (minus divisive t[lf ot eplf’s) all are part of. Democracy is not and shoiuld not be viewed as one way of looking at things or else. ER, Ginbot 7, UDJ, and even Ethiomedia and all other nationalist parties that do not want to compromise on the soverignity and integrity (not just the land but all people’s)of Ethiopia would be part of the democratic struggle in Ethiopia.
    3. If we said they are al part of the struggle, then what is the probem? It is falling for the divisive tactics of the weyane and in one form or another trying to get our issues get attention at a devastative cost of another one of our fellow Ethiopian. And in this aspect neither of the four, i.e. ER, Ethiomedia, Madebo, or Tesfaye or (with the exception of Ginbot 7 and UDJ) any other ones come clean of the charges, which would bring us to what needs to be done?
    4. At the face of mounting attacks by tplf jelaes and other confused ethiopians we need to keep our cool and try to resolve our problems in civilized manner by bringing our issues with evidence backed analysis and providing room for other ideas to flow and learn from one another. In this aspect even though ER is widely known for using many hard words especially on the unelected junta in Ethiopia, the choice of word by Ethiomedia in the title here “TO WHIP” is very inflammatory, divisive and aggravating one to respond harshly. I for one would need to remind Abraha Belai that Elias is one of his fellow Collegues that showed his stance by becoming one of “YE’ KURT KEAN LIJOCH OF ETHIOPIA” and doesn’t deserve to be whipped. I would say all of us need to use restraint and try to have a teachable spirit to learn from one another and try to keep the spirit of unity that the tplf junta try to kill if we want our dignified Ethiopiawinet to come back. People in Ethiopia are showing the ruthless junta that the can not kill their dignity regardless of what, WE IN THE DIASPORA NEED TO LEARN A LOT FROM OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN THE COUNTRY. THANK YOU ALL AND GOD BLESS ETHIOPIA AND ETHIOPIANS!!!

Elias, now is the time you to learn Eritrians are not ethiopians and will never be. From the begining you are Esayas’ man shading under the Ethioian opposition. You did good job for your country Eritrea but you have never been neither journalistic fair or humanly just when you insult(not critizise) heros like Dr. Taye, Hailu Shawel and may others. Hailu may be stubborn but undisputivly a hero who confronted weyane for years when we all were out of the country and eat fat western humbergers.

Now is your turn to pay back, goes round; comes round. Your might is over. As you wished it for others just drink it for yourself. You think for yourself that you are somebody and Ethiopians observing you for long. Eritreans never ask what Essayas is doíng? They ‘enjoy’ their ‘Freedom’. you underestimates Ethiopians. But Ethiopians usually watch patiently and make their mind when the season comes. Now, the time is over for your esponage to command the ethiopian opposition under Shabia/Eritrea.

Don’t worry you will not be alone. Unless they change their Shabiaism strategy Birhanu, Andargachew,OLFians,ONLfinas and all the rest hastler politicians will follow you soon. You all know that your political life is based on refugee-hastling. Like it was in the 90′s and 80′s there will soon be so many like you to hastle and so few to be hastled on refugee/community trics.

As for you it seems it is a matter of an order from Essayas’ security office from Asmara that forced you to make or to break. We all know where Elias stands. He stands for just and fair Ethiopia to all.
What we don’t know is where Ethiomedia stands for? From what we know, Ethiomedia stands for people like Seye Abraha and the nationalist Tigraians who bled Ethiopia and left it landlocked.
Elias has been opposing Woyanies for many many years way before Ethiomedia was created but Ethiomedia rose up only when the southern Tigraian nationalists were ousted by a wily and smarter Tigrain, aka, Meles Zenawi.
This makes Ethiomedia a very parochial website, while Elias’ Ethiopian Review is one of the few Pan Ethiopian web sites.
Elias calls a spade a spade whether the massacre is in Dessie, Bahirdar, Addis, Jimmma, Ogadien or our brothers and sisters in Somalia because justice begins at home. That is the reason Elias will call the Agazee invaders in Somalia by their slave names.

Why did the Woyannie’s sentence Elias Kifle of the Ethiopian Review for “life imprisonment” in absentia after the rigged 2005 Election, by a Woyannies Federal Court?
Why was Ethiopian Review and Elias Kifle singled out among many opposition web sites? Why was Ethiopian Review the first web site to be blocked out from Ethiopia by Woyannies?
The answer is short: Elias’ Ethiopian Review is the only opposition web site that matters a lot among all the opposition in diaspora.

To Woyannie-Tigraians, Elias is their number one target!

This is the only web site that harms and exposes Woyanies to the bone. There is no match against Ethiopian Review in the cyber media, even with all the government budget and all the Woyannie-Tigraian volunteers, none can come close to Ethiopian Review. So, no wonder, every rifraf is ganging up on Elias but to no avail. Why? Because Elias is the only person in the diaspora web sites who has put his life on line.

What’s it with some of you Ethiopians who seem to jump and make irrational statements about Eritrea and its people even when the topic on hand has nothing to do with it? Are you still (after 17 years) on a state of denial that Eritrea with its two ports is a sovereign nation? Don’t mind about how it’s governed for that’s something that should be left for Eritreans. I wish you’d clean up your own mess brought about by the criminal Meles and his TPLF gangs and, your ignorance for not seen who is the major threat to Ethiopia at the present time. The fact the world can testify is that Ethiopia minus Asab(the Eritrean Port some elites are obsessed with)is blessed with natural resouces, given peace and stabilty, can feed not only itself but the entire African continent. What it is not blessed with is a leadership with a broad vision that would put the interest of the people first. Why, you should ask, is it there’s a talk of famine in this fertile land called Ethiopia? How long are you going to continue blaming nature for such misfortunes? Can someone please see the correlation between famine and governance or lack of it and try to come up with a lasting solution to the problem so that no Ethiopian go to bed hungry, ever?. The Meles regime and the previos leaders have been so blinded with greed and hate, they caused so much pain and suffering to the people of Eritrea while, at the same time, ignoring their own people’s plea for a better living conditions at home. The sad thing is that some Ethiopians are still expressing their hate towards Eritreans and day dreaming about the issue that was ressolved long time ago. Belay Abraha is one of those advocates of “Abay Tigray” who pushed Ethiopians into unnecessary war with Eritrea with a false promise”i.e. Asab”. It looks like, thanks to some open minded Ethiopians, his hidden, ethnisist agenda is exposed for everyone to see.

Eritrea was part of Ethiopia, even just less than twenty years ago. As for the future, don’t loose sleep about it, it will never be part of Ethiopia again. The Ethiopian people do not want that, but I can guarantee you once a truly Ethiopian government comes to power, Eritrea will be cut into two, you will loose your ports, you will be landlocked, and you will bear the pain of the Ethiopian people what it means to have your country divided by force. Then you will cease to exist. Mark my word, its just a matter of time.

Let them suffer and let them use our sea ports to let their camels drink from it for a moment and when one true Ethiopian government comes to power we take back our ports.

Well..its not going to work..Lets stay focused here and engage ways to overcome our African empass we call: the cancer of the horn, ‘weyane’. Weyane’s cadre have been working day in day out to sow seeds of hate between Eritreans and Ethiopians. They succeeded in the beginning and duped a lot of Ethiopions into thinking Eritrean’s are the enemy. Ethiopians are now well aware of the single enemy to peace in the horn. Eritrea’s image although tarnished at first, it now very clear that they are geared to building their nation on their own. Eritreans have seen enough war in the past 50 years and in all honesty that is more than enough for one nation. And to dismiss a true need for peace among Eritreans and simply state ,’..war is all they know…they like war…all they know is fighting..they hate Ethiopians..’” IS QUITE SHALLOW! We dont hate Ethiopians…We know the only thing that is inhibiting PEACEFULL CO-EXISTNCE is WEYANE ! PERIOD!

You can see how troubling this notion of cooperation is to weyane cadre’s and stooges. They are all over the page.

‘Elias Yalew Weyim Mot!’: Reviewing the Ethiopian Review
    By Tesfaye Maru / June 22, 2008

A lot of positive and negative things have been said about Elias Kifle, the publisher of the Ethiopian Review. There were times that he appeared like any citizen who is genuinely angry about the gross human rights violations that are taking place in Ethiopia and is doing his part to expose them. As such, many of his commentators on his web site refer to him as “the true son of Ethiopia”. On the other hand, there were more instances where he stooped to the lowest of lows to attack people with whose politics he doesn’t agree.

In that respect, many accusations have been thrown his way. Some say that despite screaming out for what he says is democracy, he is hardly a democrat; that he would do the same thing this government is doing if he is to hold any power; that his disrespect for people he disagrees with does not promote democratic behavior and is sickening; that his frequent willingness to stoop to the lowest of places to attack people is disgusting; that he promotes “extremism” and so on. Of course, I have heard people praising him or crucifying him depending on who is being attacked. Personally, I have found it equally sickening when he said Tefera Walwa is “[the dumbest person in the EPRDF cabinet]”, that Hailu Shawel and company are all sorts of names, and Dr. Berhanu Nega was a Kehadi of some sort (that was before he became his new found “hero” now). Whether the victims are deserving of it or not, the ease with which he bad mouths people has always made me uncomfortable. As for the “extremist” views he promotes, I had given him the benefit of the doubt or even defended him, not just because he has the right to self expression, but also because I do not like to delude myself into thinking that those are opinions held by him alone. If the rating of his web site is any indication (despite all those annoying pop-up ads), it seems that he has a significant following and whether we like it or not, he brings that fact to light for us. What to do with that information is another question. All in all, as much as I have been sickened by some of his activities, I have also given him the benefit of the doubt in the face of many accusations thrown against him. But I have never brought myself to write a serious commentary about it.

However, one of the latest rumors circulating about him – that he is sponsored by the Eritrean regime – coupled with his recent activities, has caught my attention and is not a matter that I felt should be passed without some examination because his activities are negatively affecting people and causes many of us care about. Let’s get some things clear before we move on: first of all, no one has come forward with any hard evidence showing that Elias Kifle is paid by the Eritrean government for what he does. So far it’s all rumors. Second, we have to ask ourselves a question: does anybody really have to be paid by Eritrea to raise the prospect of cooperating with it? I do not think so. In fact, at one point, it appeared to me as if he was being used by some politicians who want to test the water before considering the dangerous option of cooperating with Eritrea. But that is only my suspicion, and those are only politicians. What do average Ethiopian say about this? During the last Great Ethiopian Run, it was reported that some youngsters were chanting “Gifa belew Shabian, gifa belew!” Furthermore, I have talked on the phone to random Ethiopians back home and have heard positive reviews of Isayas Afewerqi. My point is this: the fact that Elias Kifle promotes these opinions should not be the sole reason to suspect that he is getting paid for it. The truth is that, fortunately or unfortunately, however way you look at it, this opinion belongs to a significant portion of our populace. Although many Ethiopians understand the harm Isayas’ government has caused and the threat he continues to pose on our country, they are genuinely worried that Meles’ power in the region will be even more strengthened if the former is removed from power. There is also the short sighted perspective: though they understand the brutal hand he has been exercising on his own people, given the stubbornness of our people, they would rather embrace Isayas and the double standard that comes with it and score any point they could against Meles’ and company. I do not believe these people are treasonous or want bad things to happen to our country. Some have viable arguments, and others just feel suffocated and helpless in the current political situation. How to deal with these people and their opinions, and channel their energy into more productive and long sighted ways of freeing our country is a topic for another essay.

Under normal circumstances, I would not think it is productive to speculate about a person’s motive and would just stick to discussing the merit in the idea being promoted. And as I said above, the issue of cooperation with Eritrea is an opinion held by so many well meaning Ethiopians, so it is not something we can get past by denouncing the opinion holders and the opinion. Thus, the merit of the idea must be debated in a respectful environment. I am sure that if these people are presented with logical and convincing arguments as to how dangerous it is for our country in the long term to team up with Eritrea, they would be willing to abandon any thing, let alone an opinion, for the sake of our country. I am also sure that many of these people, despite entertaining such ideas of cooperation with a living enemy of our nation, do understand the importance of our different pro democracy organizations and are providing them with all the support they need.

However, when it comes to Elias Kifle, there is something that makes him different from all these people who just happened to hold those opinions; and that is what calls for the examination of what could be his real motive or any other underlying reason for his actions. As I have said, motive may not matter as long as we can debate the merit of an idea with reason. But in such cases when there is no merit to an idea and when, giving no room to discussions and debates, the man jumps to campaigns of destruction, it is important for us to learn if there is a hidden motive.

What makes Elias Kifle different from the average Tafese promoting any idea? It is not just the fact that he is the publisher of one of the highest rated Ethiopian web sites. First of all, the arguments he so fervently puts out in support of the ideals he promotes are mostly short sighted, and devoid of logic and detail. He makes his foreign policy advices in the kitchen and he doesn’t even seem to cook them. Secondly, despite the weaknesses of those ideas, he does not seem to leave any room for disagreement. After he comes up with those ideas, (heaven spare those on his way!) it is his way or death. He will then invest so much time and energy, and sell his own name and integrity (I do not know the man personally, but I am just giving him the benefit of the doubt and assuming he had one) to unleash some of the most disgusting and vicious personal attacks on people who are respected and revered by many. Never and nowhere have I seen the kinds of attacks Elias Kifle has at different times unleashed against different personalities in the Ethiopian political arena. Not even on those sickening government sponsored web sites! This man does not know the difference between young and old! He attacks opposition politicians, who have done nothing but risk their lives to face our gun-totting-mistake-for-a-government on a daily basis, the same way he attacks the child killers (in fact worse on countless occasions!)!

So please tell me: if a person is all about democracy and what is best for the country, doesn’t it make sense to you that he would present his disagreements with logical arguments and invite discussions open mindedly? And even in the case of loss of hope for such discussions, how about going off and supporting those political organizations he likes? Why so much drive to destroy others? And why the need for so much vicious attacks on the personalities behind organizations he doesn’t agree with? Let’s examine some of his recent activities and see if we can find answers.

The past couple of weeks, he has been trying to do two things: one is to pressure the newly formed Ginbot 7 into cooperating with Eritrea and embrace armed struggle fully among other things; and the other is trying to destroy the UDJ. There are two possible reasons that I can think of: one is that, as some say, he is actually receiving an incentive to promote the idea of armed struggle and the necessity it entails – Eritrea – at the cost of what is best for our country; the other is that he is genuinely concerned about our country, but is politically ignorant and lacks in strategic thinking.

Let’s explore the first possibility by asking an important question: who and what does Elias Kifle support? I will try to answer this question by pointing out two things. First, in his attempt to see the end of the UDJ before it even begins, he tries to portray himself as the supporter of Ginbot 7 and demands the leaders of the former that they free their support organizations across the world from their obligations so that they could support the latter. He also calls on them to close down all operations and join Ginbot 7. But he really isn’t a supporter of the latter either. Because, just the week before, he was giving them an ultimatum to “prove themselves in six months” and among the list of demands he was making was embracing armed struggle and cooperating with the Eritrean government. Looking at all the “recommendations” and demands he makes of Ethiopian political groups, the issue of armed struggle, and thus, cooperation with Eritrea seems to stand out. It seems to be the standard with which he judges all groups. What this means is that if Ginbot 7 does not “prove themselves in six months” by doing those two things (they are really one because seeking Eritrean support is almost a must if you are pursuing armed struggle), we should expect Elias to attack the organization, degrade its leaders, call them names, etc…Therefore, we can establish here that he is no genuine supporter of Ginbot 7. He is a supporter of what they can be if they follow his advices, with no room for disagreement, of course. (Never forget the rule: Elias yalew weyim mot!)

Second, he tries to portray himself as someone who wants a viable struggle waged against the status quo in Ethiopia and is accepted by many of his supporters as such. That doesn’t seem to be the case either; at least not to me. Because if it was, this man would keep an open mind like Ginbot 7 does and tolerate and be inclusive of all those who are in the struggle in their different ways as long as they are not harming the cause or our country. Even if there was to be a disagreement, a pro democracy Ethiopian would disagree with the ideas and support those groups he/she agrees with. But we all know that is not what Elias does. What he does is: the minute he has figured that his “armed struggle and Eritrea” policy is not being embraced by a certain organization; he would unleash a barrage of personal attacks on its leaders and start a campaign to destroy the organization in question. His behavior, let alone being of a democracy promoter, is an epitome of the very thing that has been destroying our countless organizations, associations, parties, etc…As such, by all measuring standards, it is very hard to say this man’s goal among other goals, let alone the only goal, is democracy in Ethiopia.

Therefore, what we infer from the two points raised above is that Elias Kifle is a supporter of armed struggle and cooperation with Eritrea above anything else. But to what end? We do not know and that is something only he can answer, but we have established that it sure doesn’t seem like it is for democracy. And this leaves the option of a hidden motive wide open.

If that is not the case and the man genuinely wants democracy for Ethiopia, then the only other possible reason left for his actions is sheer political ignorance and lack of strategic thinking among other things.

First of all, his attempt to portray Ginbot 7 and the UDJ as organizations that are opposites, as opposed to ones that can compliment each other, is lack of understanding of the very philosophy on which the former is formed. Ginbot 7 has made it clear that its goal is to bring together all democracy loving Ethiopian parties, movements, civic organizations, etc…for the purpose of joining efforts in the struggle against the dictatorship and shorten its time in power. They did not say they want to destroy any body. Even more importantly, the last thing the leaders of Ginbot 7 would like to see happen is their former Kinijit colleagues – whom they know to have integrity and dedication – denigrated, disrespected, and called names. I am sure that Elias’ former enemy but new found hero, Dr. Berhanu Nega himself, strongly disapproves the former’s attacks on UDJ’s leaders. As such, Elias is not only distorting or misinterpreting the stated goals of Ginbot 7, but also stepping all over the personal values of its leaders and portraying them in a bad light.

Secondly, he makes an attempt to portray leaders of the UDJ as complacent with the sufferings that are happening in Ethiopia at the moment, as fearful of prison, as people who want full time jobs with travel options, and as fake opposition who are only there to give the government legitimacy. He gives no substantive evidence to prove his points, and past and current records of the individuals point to the opposite. The only thing left for me to say is that he completely misses the point of why the UDJ exists under the current circumstances in Ethiopia. Before I go on to explain this, let’s quickly go over each accusation. 1. The leaders do criticize the government on various issues although it may not be to the satisfaction of Mr. Elias and his likes. All one needs to do is read the various interviews they have been giving. 2. They obviously are not fearful of prison because, if they were, they would have remained in the U.S. or Europe or simply stayed out of politics. 3. Most of these people are well educated individuals with better than average jobs or personal businesses before joining politics and they still have those options open. Or as I have said before, they could have decided to seek asylum elsewhere, create a web site, unleash all sorts of angry rants, score high ratings and live off ads. So, obviously, they are not in need of jobs. (Isn’t he mocking his readers when he suggests that people like Dr. Yaeqob Hailemariam are in need of full time jobs that let them travel around the world?) 4. Lastly, their past and present records of integrity and continued willingness to put their lives at risk to carry out the promises they have made to stand for democracy proves beyond doubt that they are not a fake party created to give the ruling party legitimacy.

So, what exactly is Elias missing? Many important points. First, if Ginbot 7 ever succeeds in pressuring this government to dialogue or even remove it, we need a viable party that will sit at the other end of the table or be ready to compete for power. Ginbot 7 is not a political party; it is a movement. Its stated goal of bringing other parties and groups together, and the way it is structured at the moment prevent it from quickly transforming itself into a political party and joining the competition in case this government is removed or pressured to open the political space. Therefore, for that day, we need a political party that was established and maintained openly and democratically, not clandestinely like Ginbot 7. We need a party that has gone to every end of the country to organize members, promote democratic ideals, and amass members and their support. Furthermore, the culture of peaceful struggle is badly needed in our country and people deserve a chance to experience it, practice it, live it and see its result at the end. They deserve a chance to establish from scratch a democratic party that does business in a transparent way, carry it to victory and call themselves the primary stake holders. UDJ is our best shot to achieve these purposes.

Secondly, in order to achieve the above stated goals of establishing a party based on grassroots support, UDJ leaders must do all it takes – including walking on tip-toes around those criminals occupying our palaces – without going against the democratic stances of the party. They must do all their best to escape prison for one more day, and save their party from being denied existence for as long as possible. The more days they could spend outside prison, the more chance they have to take the party to all corners of the country and sew the seeds of democracy. Establishing the party and strengthening its roots is more important for the long term benefit of our cause than going to war over the denial of their meeting rights. It is more important than issuing daily statements criticizing the government over its non-endless flaws, mistakes and blunders. First, who can keep up with these things? Second, there is no point to them banging their heads on a wall over issues the entire world already knows. The question is what to do about it! Elias screams his lungs out at the government every day; what has happened? Under normal circumstances, if there was freedom, opposing political parties would criticize the incumbent party over all sorts of things to make clear to the public where they stand. In our case, it could take them to prison any day. I am not saying anything will save them from prison, but the longer they stay outside, the better it is for our cause in the long run. UDJ is saying we must refuse to quit in the face of injustice. That we must not allow these criminals to run us out of our country! We must refuse to admit that we are not smart enough to defeat them even with their guns held against our heads! And by God, we have got to be the luckiest people in the world that we have people like Bertukan Mideksa, Yaekob Hailemariam, Gizachew Shiferaw, Hailu Araya, etc…who are more than willing to put themselves at the fore front in this dangerous ride!

All those who want democracy, are objective, open minded and understand the complexity of politics cannot look at the issue of the two organizations as one or the other. I understand if people who are adamant about supporting the peaceful and peaceful alone path the UDJ follows disagree with Ginbot 7. However, those who support the latter cannot argue, based on any stated stance of the organization, that they disagree with or denounce the UDJ. In fact, their cause is best served by supporting it in all that is possible. If not for the methods they have chosen, the leaders of UDJ need to be supported and blessed for their personal commitment to the cause of democracy and their willingness to be on the ground serving it.

Elias has a lot of explaining to do as to the real motives of his actions. I think we have the right to know who is behind these endless attacks against people and organizations many Ethiopians hold so dear and find them to be important to the future of our nation. I personally am sick and tired of the Eliases, the Hailus, and the Tayes of the world working day and night to steal from my future and the future of my children, as if the evil doings of , the Meleses, the Berekets, and the Sebhats of the world isn’t enough! It is time that supporters of democracy stand up to these people, and stand up strong as much as they do against the latter! In fact, it is well over due!

As for the ease with which Elias disrespects, bad mouths and attacks the characters of people he has once praised or professed to respect, my mother would have called such a person “sid adeg, balege!” Wouldn’t yours?

I hope you learn something or just wither away where you belong… outside, the Ethiopian polity.

  225. Ayzosh Agere says:

A MUST READ ARTICLE FOR ETHIOPIANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

    Adapt or Perish
    By Burhan Ali – Jun 23, 2008

    SOURCE: awate.com

On the 29th day of May 2008, the renowned Egyptian commentator and analyst, Mohammed Hassanain Heikel, was invited to be a guest speaker to the Egyptian judges in their club in Cairo. The forum took the form of predictions and projections of what may happen in the next few years in the Arab world and the changes expected. His predictions, in the aftermath, drew extensive attention and responses, mostly positive, from different media outlets. The Arabic based websites where rife with news and comments about the forum and the predictions made by the guru there. But, from the fewer negative reviews the forum received, it was the Sudanese websites and newspapers which were most excited and critical of the man. Why were the Sudanese unhappy? What does his prediction about Sudan tell us about Eritrea—and what can, and should, we do to prepare for it?

It is worthwhile to note here, that Mr. Heikel is not a light-headed young journalist in search of a journalistic scoop. He has a professional reputation beyond reproach and he has lived to see many of his predictions of the past materialize. So when he speaks, people pay attention.

    Heikel’s Prediction

Mr. Heikel indicated and argued that Sudan is now entering into a stage of a series of painful surgical operations. His words:

“I am sorry to say it, but the crisis in Sudan is one of complexity which was left for long with no serious attempts to solve, because the state there believed that ethnic and national divisions can be solved through the use of military subjugation, and this, simply, was not correct. Problems were neglected for long decades. Due to this and other factors, the Sudan cannot possibly survive in its current geopolitical form, especially if we take into account that Sudan was created by forcing and stitching together inherently discordant and jarring constituents to form the hinter land of the aborted Egyptian Nile Empire of Mohammed Ali, the 19th century Pasha and ruler of Egypt.”

Mr. Heikel further predicted that Sudan is heading towards a dark future and will break up into four parts: the Arab North will be appended to Egypt, he said; the West to Chad; the South to Kenya and Uganda and the East to Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Of course, the anger expressed by the Sudanese is understood, given the predictions and the shock it carries with, including the perceptions associated with abrupt changes and upheavals, a state which can be described only as staring into the eyes of the abyss. However, it seems that the Sudanese critics focused on the man rather than examining or pointing weaknesses and faults in the reasoning which leads to his predictions. It also seemed that they were only expressing the fact that they hate what he said regardless of its validity.

    What If Heikel Is Right?

Only time will tell if events will unfold as predicted by Mr. Heikel, yet, the ideas he presented deserve a think-over by interested Eritreans which may seem to some as only an intellectual exercise, while, in reality, it is a ventage to peep through on a possible future among other possibilities for the entire region.

To many, what is written here-above may look far-fetched, like a fairy tale, but before thinking ill of it, one may well do visiting few universities’ websites–to the ones who take interest in the Horn of Africa and are addicted to preparing geopolitical blue prints which magically emerge to life, somewhere ahead in time. Only then, you may see how very realistic this may look.

If what Mr. Heikel predicted comes true in the manner he described, then this may be distressing and paradoxical to Eritrea, as it will find itself at the focus point of three competing nationalistic movements with universal claims: The Eritrean National Movement, The Greater Tigrai National movement, and the Beja National movement. The only way these movements may coexist is only in a confederation, I would think, but, such an arrangement may only be a dream, a Nirvana of sorts.

    Who Benefits?

There is also, here, another effect which could be, as well, a possible motivational source for the predictions of the pundit. It is possible that he was expressing (consciously or otherwise) the wishes and dreams of an Empire, himself being part and parcel of the imperial past of Nasser’s regime. Egypt’s imperial ambitions were broken down on the Sinai peninsula some forty years ago, when the Egyptian army, in a lightning strike by the Israelis, lost what is now dubbed as the six days war. That war effectively brought an end to Egyptian ambitions eastwards to the oil fields of Arabia and the Gulf where other, more powerful interests, emerged victorious and favored reducing Egypt to what you may call now an empire in tatters.

Throughout history, it was demonstrated, time and again, going as far back as ancient Egypt, that when ways to the east are blocked on the face of this Imperialism-yearning country, it takes upon itself to compensate for that, by facing south towards the sources of the Nile and the never-ending failure of Empire building is repeated. In the nineteenth century, this dream was killed and buried under the hills and plains of Gundet and Gura’a in present day Eritrea, when the Egyptian army of Ratib Pasha, led by American mercenaries and veterans of the American civil war, was annihilated by Yohannes IV of Ethiopia and the crown prince of Egypt had literally to run for his life.

But that did not stop Egypt’s facing south to the Nile sources in the Ethiopian highlands and the lake regions of central Africa. It was in this context that Sadat, early in 1980, provided weapons and even sent his Air Forces later in intervention for the benefit of the regime of Mobutu in the Zaire.

Thus, the all-winning party in Mr. Heikel’s scenario, though he didn’t say it, is Egypt. It will have extended itself south towards its Imperial dreams bringing it in direct border tangency with Ethiopia at the foot of the water tower in an era where wars of water and resources are becoming the all-too-common-wars, and escalating. It would bring Uganda and Kenya to the same fate in the shadows of the Empire, so close to the lakes region. This will be even more probable that the population of Egypt will cross 110 million.

If it is decided at one point of time that such an outcome is for the benefit of Eritrea and its deliverance, then when its time comes, Eritreans should push towards the objective, seeking and achieving what is the the best for them only. After all, we must have, by now, learned from our Sudanese brethren the principles of pragmatism. Adopt or perish: it is the game of life and death.

    And Who To Befriend?

Related to this matter but in an indirect fashion, is the question that this writer is haunted with: why is it that the tyrant of Eritrea, in all his clumsiness, wins diplomatically in places where the opposition parties are supposed to excel? The answer to this, but one is not sure, is that the dictator’s approach is that of creating alternatives to any option he wants to take. He is expert at creating such dire and frightening alternatives that choosing him appears to be the most prudent. Why can’t we do that? We can do it even much better and more efficient. Why can’t we learn from the despot himself?

The Eritrean Democratic alliance is now required to re-invent itself. It is required to come up with new visions. What, for instance, prevents our democratic alliance of approaching the Israeli state, assure them of our goodwill and court for their neutrality if not friendship? No venue should be left for the tyrant’s monopoly, it is only pragmatic, and Eritreans should not fail in that, if they want to survive the tyrant.

Should we allow Afeworki to liberate us from Zenawi?

    By Elias Abebe | June 23, 2008

I decided to write this piece in support of Ephrem Madebo’s recent comments posted on your website with regard to Ethiopian Review’s most recent move to try and destruct the peaceful but bumpy ride to bring some semblance of democracy in our country.

Right from the outset , ER has been relentlessly sabotaging every effort that was being put to effect democratic changes by opposition groups in Ethiopia. From openly supporting and arguing in favour of the cold blooded massacre of innocent Ethiopian civilians by Shabia-backed Somali separatists in the eastern part of our country over year ago to instigating elementary school children to take on ruthless state security forces with stones, Ethiopian Review has caused incalculable damage to the eventual weakening of the Kinjit-led struggle.

ER’s often uncorroborated and fictional accusations have spared almost no one in the opposition camp. Having followed reports on this rather unprofessionally run website over the past two years and a half, I can recall Professor Mesfin having been reported dead and Hailu Shawel losing his sight following beatings by Zenawi’s henchmen. Only to shamelessly pay homage today, ER at one point viciously attacked Dr Berhanu Nega as a TPLF spy whose leadership was weakening the Kinjit movement. In one incredibly outrageous ‘editorial’ note , ER’s ‘editor’ called on the Kinjit executive committee to grant Hailu Shawel emergency sweeping powers to make all decisions on behalf of the organisation. Of all the arrogant and almost always daft comments ER published, the one that clearly exposed the website as a mere Shabia appendage was the inclusion in a sham man of the year popularity poll of Ethiopia’s worst enemy in the last half century. The pro-Shabia editor of ER unashamedly almost crowned Isayas Afeworki as a man who has done the most commendable job for Ethiopia in 2007. Now what Ethiopian would in their sane mind call Isayas a do-gooder to anything remotely Ethiopian !!

That wasn’t the end of it, in an interview with EthiopiaFirst’s Ben several months ago , ER’s editor made this insulting attempt to educate the audience about how the Shabia fought 30 long years only to reaffirm its true place in one Ethiopia and how the TPLF sabotaged the Shabia’s desire to remain Ethiopian. In fact, he went on to argue that the likes of Herman Cohen (the former US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs) could give their testimonies about how it was under TPLF’s influence and against the will of the then EPLF (Shabia) Eritrea was seceded. Further expounding his deeply flawed argument, ER’s editor took the interview as an opportunity to outline the economic disadvantages of discontinuing the unfair (to Ethiopia) trade relations with the Shabia. Personally none of what he said during the interview upset me more than his utterly insane remark about how the two countries could mutually benefit if Ethiopia flung open its market for the cheap cottage industry products from Eritrea.

Knowing what I know about Ethiopian Review and its destructive political activism , I don’t have much doubt that more harm will continue to be done to the painstaking endaevour and sacrifice many brave Ethiopians are paying to bring about democratic change in our country. Whatever the direction of the struggle, I don’t think Ethiopians, with any political persuasions, will ever trust Afeworki to liberate them from Zenawi, despite the adage the enemy of my enemy is my friend. It is too obvious in this case that both are sworn enemies of Ethiopia. We Ethiopians are not that fool and don’t suffer from short memory!!

Ato Elias, I’m pleasantly surprised to find Ato Madebo’s remarks here on ER. Mat be this is a bit of a sign that you are still open to grow and exploit your skills to the ebenfit of Ethiopia. I say this because after coming to your website for several years as my first stop for news about Ethiopia, I must admit to you I’ve increasingly found it not just uncfortable but ourtight upsetting to see ER’s denigration and villification of those you disagree with. Take these criticisms to heart and try to be a more effective reporter. ER is very confused about whether it’s a source of objective news or a your personal pulpit to advance often mistaken and simple exhortations tah tonly seem to end alientating sensible readers, undermining the crediblity of your ER and yours as well. I think ATo Madebo has done an excellent job of giving you a useful analysis of ER and you. Take it to heart…and by the way…I’d suggest to you to read the many eulogies for the recently departed and most admired and loved Mr. tim Russell as someone you might learn a few things from… this in particular is a great one…

    Hi Elias,

I have been following your site for quite sometime now. Even though I am usually reserved with making comments, I cannot just sit idly by when one of our own, true Ethiopian, is coming under fire from this chigaram weyane supporters.
That is all they are, a bunch of goons with protecting weyane’s future at the forefront of their objectives.

Never mind these losers, just concentrate on your good work and continue to torment these soulless individuals. They are trying to mask themselves as truth bearers, when in actual fact we are very aware of their evil motives are to weaken your position and mute your roaring message.

Its too late for them now..the tides are turning in the horn. Ethiopians, Eritreans Somalians all know who is the single soul enemy of the horn: it is weyane!!

Ethiopians will choose whatever course is necessary to depose the military junta of weyane meles zerawi.
    Keep up the good work.

Greetings from Alemayehu & Family (Boston)

There seems something is wrong with Elias. Or it seems like Elias has matured and has changed. For example, I have sent him several articles and blogged several comments that have different perspective than him, but he never entertained them. And I heard other people saying he has never posted comments or articles that have different view than him.

But note now he is allowing pro and against his perspectives articles and comments to be posted on his website with out censorship. It seems like Elias has CHANGED for good!!!

When I sent him articles at times he called me Woyanne. At other time he called feudal Hailu Shawel supporter. At other time he called me pro Berhanue. And lately he has started calling me pro UJDP.

Who is Elias? Is he Feudal? Or is he Communist? For sure he is not democrat!!!

It is amazing to read that a considerable number of those who commented on this article and some more out there believe that Meles is and has been working for Eritrea. After 17 years and especially after the events of the last 10 years there are still people who believe that Meles is an Eritrean agent????

It is disheartening to learn that Ethiopians do not still understand their problems. It should have been clear by now that Meles is working for Western Powers, for his party and for himself.

Our brothers are suffering back home and all you guys do is bicker. What good is it to tear each other up by waging war on another website, when you all can easily join forces and pit battle against the meles’ regime.
I am baffled by the response ethiomedia is engaging for Elias’ endeavor to get rid of weyane once and for all. Elias is 100% right when he has consistently said that,..”.we need to join forces with any one who is willing to help us get rid of weyane from power..”
We Ethiopians, I think need to put our pride aside, cause its obviously clouding our judgment. The change is a fundamental one, and I can see that people are grasping the idea of cooperating with Eritrea. It makes total sense to me. Not to mention an instant runny bowels for zenawi!! Jokes aside, all we need is a little push from the respective leadership in the diaspora, and that will accelerate the ongoing domino effect.

    God Bless Ethiopia!

I am very sorry about the article Dr. Ephrem Madebo

I have a question for you Dr. Ephrem, Are you sure Abraham belay’s web site is a pure Ethiopian people advocate website as he introduce himself he a typical woyane member for a his personal and group interest he was against with present leader of woyane memeber, but now evrything is clear his mition to reform the woyane group by Gebru Asrat and Seye Abrah. You must know this clear idea before you throw a negative atitiued on ER. Did you agree with Abraham’s chioce. The Ethiopian people need a radical change. The Ethiopian people need the real person who has national interest. Abraham and his fellow are struggled for the Tigrian republic did you have doubt on this issue. Please try to do your investigation.
When you are writting about balancing what do you mean did you want compromise with woyane. Please think as an intellectual before you say something. If you have a plan to built somthing in addis ababa you can do evrything by yourself don’t try to distort the attitude of the real son of Ethiopian vanguard like Elias.

    Lengisaw,

Yes Meles is an Eritrean. He wrote books on why Eritrea should seceed from Ethiopia. He sent thousands of Tigre youth to their death to “liberate” Eritrea. He shot and slashed Ethiopians on the streets of Addis because they opposed Eritrean seceesion. He imposed Mussolini’s ethnic bantustan on the Ethiopian people to kill any Ethiopian sovreignity and love. He and Sebhat still talk how they will defend Eritrea to death. Anybody who talks good about Ethiopia is the enemy, anybody who talks good about Eritrea will be promoted. The Ethiopian people know the truth. The Ethiopian people will in the end get rid of him and wipe Ethiopia clean of any Eritrean. Eritreans are the most hateful people in the face of the Earth. They lie to their teeth, they raise their kids with hatred about Ethiopians. They wish the destruction of Ethiopia day and night,. Any one who wants to destroy Ethiopia they feed. We will never forget the Ethiopia flag that they step on at Asmara stadium, not 1993, but 2006. It will be avenged. Spare us Weyanae this Weyane that. The problem is not Weyanae, but leftover Eritreans inside Weyanae. You know the brother in laws of Ekekam Sebhat Ephrem, ye Italian wusha, Amara mewagat atechelem yalechewa. Yagerae sew yewega beresa, yetewega ayeresam yelal. Eritreans we know you guys. We grew up with you, you did not just arrive from planet Venus. You like to talk big. And since 1991, you even got a big excuse, to even talk more. But I can assure you, if the sons of Welde Mikael kehadi from Hazega could find it in themselves to be called human beings, do not think the sons of Keneaa Kirsho Sahle Selassie, will not find it too, and liberate their country from this blood sucking keffafay hateful occupation imposed upon them by Hamassien liars.
Ye mata mata ewente yereta. Ethiopia will be free, the Ethiopian people will once again be adminstered by an Ethiopian, and Eritrea will in the end cease to exist.

    SHEWA

what a shame to have that much hatred towards us Eritreans. if people like never exists on this planet the people of this world would have been living peacefully, including Eritreans and Ethiopians. but unfortunately people like you, siye abrha, abrha belay exists. any way what ever amharic wards you try to use, and decorating your nick with “SHEWA”,the Eritrean and Ethiopian people can read beyond your nick and your amharic bla bla bla .people are now more advanced and sophisticated than your imagination to read your brain and expose your skeleton on their head what kind of person or to what political group you stand for, just by what you wright and say . so “showa” come out of your shell and show your true DEDEBIT face.at this time and age most Amharas Somalis,Eritreans,Ogadenians and the rest of Ethiopian people don’t dance around the tune you are singing. it is not very long when the DEDEB from DEDBIT Siye abrha ,gebru asrat, and meles , have killed a vast amount of young Ethiopians in the name of BADIME on the Eritrean soil. the memory is still fresh in Ethiopia and Eritrea minds.the blood of this young innocent Ethiopians and Eritreans still dripping from sye’s hands.and it is abrha belay who is jumping up and down to support the blood thirsty sye abraha and trying to discredit Elias kifle . SHEWA and you mention the people of HAMASSIEN that only exposes you that you are hard core tigrayan than a true Ethiopian. coz me as an AMICHIE growing in ADDIS there is one fact that i know and that is, the AMHARAS no mater where they come from they don’t go that far to divide people on their least race. actually to them any tigrigna speaker whether Ertirean or tigrayan is simply “TIGRE” this all is to expose your tigray marrow. you cant hide under any skirt no matter how large the skirt is could be (JENDAYE FRAZRE’S)when a one day old child reads your post can sense that it is siye, gebru asrat or abrha belay who are talking. so pleas stop your BURAKEREYO in Amharic. and shewa let me assure you one thing the brave people of Eritrea and Ethiopia will work together to get rid off the bandits from tigray once and for all. in fact woyanie is dead clinically if it was not for the constant infusion from the American administration. peace and light to brave people of Ethiopia and Eritrea.peace is just on the corner to those GOD fearing people. and woyanie will b thrown to its last destination which is the mekelle cemetery. and finally SHEWA don’t be ashamed yourself if that is all what DEDEBIT can show , show yourself.

It is very surprising to see my fellow Ethiopian attacking Elias this much, you are just making the woyannes very happy, I am one of the people who have differences with Elias regarding many issues that he believes in but I have never doubted his love for his country and I know for real that he is dedicated to stop woyannes and see Ethiopia with better rulers, he has once supported Lidetu regardless of criticizms after that he has corrected himself and never trusts anyone which is good, we need someone like Elias to expose dirty politicians within us and to scare the others not to open their pockets for woyanne’s bribe to sell out Ehiopians, imagine the politicians of Ethiopia without ER, everything would have been secret and we would have been sold over and over again. The other thing is that, please stop insulting Ethiopian ethnic groups, specially Tigreans, there are many Tigre Ethiopians who are against the woyanne regime and who are willing to get rid of them, regarding about the Shabia’s, we can never ever trust them and it surprises me to see Elias who has been an arch enemy of Shabia back in the days when Ethiopian Review used to be printed in LA, now seeking the help of Shabia, I don’t know if this is a smart tactic but I know something for sure, I don’t have the experience of Elias and other Ethiopians dedicated to overthrow woyanne for many many years, so God help you guys but my instinct tells me that Shabias can not be trusted. Regarding about Elias’ ethinic background, I know that he is from the Amhara tribe, we have met several times when he used to live in LA like around a decade ago.
    Thanks for the time.

Mr.Elias a while ago i wrote a comment about you calling names to any indivisual or group is not a noble character of an Ethioipian culutre. However, for the likes of ETHIO(WEYANE MEDIA) please donot give a flip about what they said. What do you expect from Abraha Belay & Co. his main purpose of having the web page is serving MLLT at its best. I read a comment an Eritrean ask why is Abraha Belay hate so much Eritrean and Eritrea? I will tell you the reason later. I my self back in 1991 i hate the fact that Eritrea is becoming another country. I grew up with Eritreans i befrinded and i spend many nights at their house hold and i can say i do know Eritreans very well. Ato Belay the diference b/n your ppl and Eritreans is the same diference b/n DAY & NIGHT. So, your hatered cultivates long ago while your parents were candle holders for Eritrean highlanders or Hamasiens. You grew up eating their left overs and so on. This is pay back time for and his likes Seyoum mesefen, seye abraha and gebru asrat. Mr. Elias please keep informing us a news and do not worry about the weyane wolves.

We have had enough of your lies and constant fabrications and distortion of the truth. You lied to us every time you opened your mouths. Each and every time you told us we won, or when you say we have had development or economic growth… IT IS ALL A LIE! No more will the Ethiopian people be duped into thinking that. You are exposed for the whole world to see! Game Over! Let the healing of Ethiopia begin with the timely exit of weyane from power!
