TPLF selects new leadership, no new faces

The 10th conference of the ruling Tigray People’s Liberation Front (Woyanne) this week selects new executive and central committees. The selection brought little change. Some of the changes are:

Sibhat Nega has been forced out. His ouster has been engineered by Meles Zenawi’s wife Azeb Mesfin who wanted to take over EFFORT, the TPLF business conglomerate that he has been controlling.

Seyoum Mesfin, Arkebe Equbay, and Abay Tsehay have been removed from the Executive Committee, but they remain in the central committee. They were the only remaining voices inside the executive committee (politburo) who some times stand up to Meles.

Azeb Mesfin, Debretsion Gebre-Mikael, and Beyene Mikru have been promoted to the Executive Committee.

The other six members — Meles Zenawi, Tsegay Berhe, Abay Woldu, Abadi Zemo, Tewodros Hagos, and Dr Tewodros Adhanom — remain in the 9-member executive committee. Meles will continue as chairman and Abay Wolde, currently Vice President of Tigray, has been selected as vice-chairman of TPLF, replacing Seyoum Mesfin.

Among the new Executive Committee members, Debretsion GebreMikael is known to be Meles Zenawi’s yes-man who has been assigned to block news web sites and jam radio stations as head of Ethiopian Information and Communication Technology Development Agency. His primary task as head of the agency is to make sure that most Ethiopians will not have access to information technology.

Beyene Mikru is another Meles Zenawi loyalist who has served as head of the Tigray Region Education Bureau.

Tsegay Berhe is another Meles loyalist who is currently the president of Tigray Region. He was appointed to that position after the former president of Tigray, Gebru Asrat, had a fallout with Meles. Gebru Asrat now heads the opposition Arena Party.

Of course we all know Azeb Mesfin, the first lady of Africa’s corruption who, along with her husband, has stolen hundreds of millions of dollars of Ethiopia’s treasure. Her new position as one of the 9 people who rule Ethiopia will allow to do more looting.

Dr Tewodros Adhanom is currently the Health Minister. Under his watch, Ethiopia’s health care system has become one of the worst in Africa. These days people in Ethiopia go to a hospital to die, not to get treatment.

Mulugeta Alemseged, Dr. Gebreab Barnabas, Dr. Adhane Haile, Tewolde Gebru (Director of TDA), Dr. Hailemikael Abera, Fiseha Zerihun (Mayor of Mekelle), and Dr Wolderufael Alemayehu have resigned from the Central Committee.

Gebreab Barnabas is responsible for the Anuak massacre (genocide) in Ethiopia’s western region of Gambella.

There is little surprise in the selection of members to both the the Executive and Central committees. It is simply a reshuffle of existing members to allow Meles Zenawi solidify his grip on the organization.

Similar reshuffles have taken place in TPLF’s puppet groups, OPDO and ANDM. Addisu Legese, Tefera Walwa, Aba Dula Gemeda, Junedin Sado and other high-profile puppets have been removed from top leadership positions, while tail-wagging loyal adghis Demeke Mekonnen, Gedu Andargachew, Alemayehu Atomsa, and Kuma Demeksa were promoted to chairmanships.

    but ethiopians dont care much about the shuffling of tplf criminal and racist group…..we are awaiting the final days to get rid of the tplf terrorist and criminal group once and for all from ethiopia, and yet this requires everyone’s effort and contribution towards the struggle that is being started by a few brave ethiopians….lets all join the struggle by any means…espeically finacially from here in Diaspora regardless of previous bad experiences on oppostions…we should come out and support them if we need the end of tplf terrorist era….

  3. TPLF runs like a private business owned by Melese Zenawi and his wife. TPLF is corrupted by nepotism. All these groups are related to each other directly or indirectly. Gradually Melese became a cult leader. Song was written about him and books were written about him. His pictures are in display where ever you go. Now he brought his wife to power like Mao and Nicolae Ceausescu. The old dogs are out replaced by handpicked cadres that follow Melese like their god almighty.

  9. Arkebe Ekubay is young looking(hand some), energetic, hard working and one of the few popular EPRDF officials in ethiopia, most expected as the next PM of ethiopia.But being liked by people cost him excutive commitee membership and looks like he had fall out with PM Melesse.

    The funny thing is PM Melesse assigned his wife as excutive commitee member of TPLF is one of the historical mistakes made by PM Melesse after advocating port asseb ownership of ereitrea and dividing the country by ethnic based federalism.

    Any way it is funny and the symptom of totalitarian behaviour.

  10. from what I heard the out come of the new cc is because of the division inside TPLF leaders as well as the greed inside the TPLF camp. there is a hidden war inside the cc who is going to out numbered who. because of that some of the old TPLF members have resigned out of fear of going to prison. the insider also say the new TPLF cc is like a house of card. TPLF has transformed from a front to an organized family and ethnic (Awraja) based gangster groups. also this division is manifested in ordinary Tigraians inside and out side tigrai and abroad.

  14. Here is piece of idea to consider

    The burden of removing weyane from power must be shared by all citizens.The principle that need to be adapted is be self-reliant and assistance from Ethiopi’s traditional friends.The current desire to have any attachement with Eritria need to be discarded.What Ethiopia needs the most with Eritria is good neighbrly relationship.
    An opposing power to deter the emboldend policy of weyane need to be put in place.The long term object and focus need to be the removal of weyane;its short term plan to organize Ethiopians in one banner and prepare the public for a possible eventuillity.

    1-Sound out the call to form multi national armed organization.
    2-Train volunter,future military experts, citizens in friendly nations-Israil
    3- All Ethiopians make a vow to digg deep their pocket and finance this liberating army.

  17. Debretsion Gebre-Mickael is the most dangerous person. He can do anything to get what he wants. He is of course Meles’s yes-man. He currently control the ICT sector, most importantly telecom. He also has yes-men at Telecom to do what he desires. He does not have any respect for non-TPLF ministers. I “like” him a lot.

In my view and opinion, Tigray is at war with Eritrea right now and our executive committees most of them are related to Eritrea either by blood or marriage and they are not qualified to make life and death decisions for the state of Tigray and Tigrayans now and in the future until Eritrea is part of Ethiopia. If Eritrea was part of Ethiopia, I would not have any problem any one from Eritrea ethnics or mixed can be the MP of Ethiopia. There is no any other counties who are at war and their forces are confronted each other for years and one of the country top decision maker is from the other side of the enemy country. We Tigrayans are very weird and do not understand the consequences the decisions are being made by those people to our future. I am not saying to spread hate but to make sure Tigray is in the hand of good Tegaru in peace and war to make decision to our future survivals. Tigray state should call another conference and elect true Tegaru like Arkebe Equbay, Abay Tsehaye and others not Meles, Tsegay, Azeb, Tewedrose Hagos, Tewedros Adhanom, and a lot of from the CC members like Berhane Gebre kirstos and Tsegay wife. Wake up Tigray and defend your true interest for he future of Tigray, do not be QEDAD LOQOTA TIGRAY. Lets all of us be smart and learn from the previous mistakes we made and ended up split our beloved organization.

Although I am one of the citizens who have been encouraged by the socio-economic progresses at home, and have hoped for leadership changes at the CC and executive committee, I have no words to express my disappointment on the family feud recurring even today in the TPLF. What is wrong with the TPLF leadership? I have utterly lost faith on the truthfulness of Meles’s promise to make leadership changes.

    People who have been on his side during political turmoil are crawling to the executive committee. They have been in power in the Region as long as Meles in Addis. Where are the new generations of leadership we have been promised before election? Is it election rhetoric like the west? I deeply appreciate the courage the other organizations have done some major changes even though the gender inclusion was barely scant. The mutual relationship in the TPLF leadership will remain a bottleneck to make a major replacement with a bright posterity because of the fear factor that the absence of their arm twisting power in their interest may have a sequel in the future.

    Dear Prime Minister, here we go again back to square one. This is a well intentioned “election” predetermined behind the curtain to keep the same leadership for many years to come. If there is any more promise to come, please don’t fool me more. This was one of the greatest opportunities for you to show to the Tigray /Ethiopian people you adhere to your promise and deliver accordingly. Who is the new leadership in the executive? Who could I eye of the list to be a potential prime minister? Are we not supposed to carry hopefulness? You are getting ready to “retire” and your colleagues are warming up to assume leadership?

    Diversifying the leadership in TPLF and Tigray region has remained impossible because there is no good will from the top leadership. Same people or people related to them either in blood, Wereda, or housekeeping are again in the party leadership. Don’t we have a youth that need to join the leadership now so they can be potential prime ministers in the future? Why keep people uniform in ideology for many years? Why fear people who can challenge the status quo?

    After a major disappointment with TPLF during the split, I was encouraged with the changes at home and the promise for leadership change was a long awaited event. Yet, it ended to disappointment big time again.

    Don’t tell us a leadership change! It is status quo! Fool me not again please.

  25. I can see deep mistrust, division and paranoia between TPLF high rankinig officials the selection of new leaders shows me PM Melesse is cornered and isolated himself from the party (TPLF) instead of reinforcing his grip in power.

    I am not a futurologist but I can see probable coup de tat in near future in ethiopia.
