China helps Ethiopia’s tyrant jam broadcast signals

A worldwide boycott of Chinese products may need to be organized to let China know that it needs to stop helping brutal dictators in the third world silence independent media. The following is a press release from ESAT.

ESAT accuses China of complicity in jamming signals

The Ethiopian Satellite Television (ESAT), which resumed transmissions to Ethiopia last week after nearly two months of interruption, has urged the government of the People’s Republic of China to desist from providing technology, training and technical assistance to the regime in Ethiopia to enable it to jam shortwave radio and satellite transmissions to Ethiopia.

The Meles regime is currently blocking independent news websites and jamming the Amharic services of the Voice of America, Deutsche Welle, and the Ethiopian Satellite Television, among others, with the help of technology and technical assistance provided by the Chinese government.

Since its launch in April 2010, ESAT has faced intense and persistent signal interference that has disrupted its transmissions six times in its short span of life. ESAT’s management has investigated the matter thoroughly and confirmed from reliable sources inside Ethiopia that the government of China has been actively working with the Meles regime to jam ESAT’s transmissions.

Mr. Kilfe Mulat, the exiled President of the Ethiopian Free Press Journalists Association (EFPJA), has said that China’s complicity in stifling freedom of expression and undermining efforts to spread democratic values in Ethiopia is shameful and sets a bad precedence in the whole of Africa. “Ethiopia is not only the seat of the AU but also a historic symbol of freedom in Africa as the only African nation that has never been colonized. Aiding tyrants to stifle their people and block the free flow of information is tantamount to committing unwarranted crimes against the freedom-loving people of Africa that are making sacrifices to exercise their inalienable rights and free themselves from corrupt tyrants that are hampering progress in the continent.”

The President of EFPJA also urged organizations and nations promoting freedom and democracy to provide resources and support to the Ethiopian Satellite Television to overcome the China-backed jamming challenge that has seriously threatened the survival of ESAT, a grassroots media project totally funded by the Ethiopian Diaspora.

Mr. Mulat further noted that the government of China must realize the fact that collaborating with African tyrants and exporting tools of repressions to countries like Ethiopia is an inexcusable act that will further tarnish the image of China as a sponsor of tyranny and oppression.

ESAT, which was set up by a group of Ethiopian exiled journalists and pro-democracy activists to fend off Prime Minister Meles Zenawi’s war against every avenue of freedom, has been facing attacks and interference by the Meles regime.

“In addition to building Internet firewalls for the regime, China has emerged as one of the most formidable enemies of freedom in Ethiopia and the entire continent of Africa. China should realize the fact that the Meles regime is violating its own constitution that guarantees freedom of expression to citizens. By assisting the Meles regime in jamming ESAT and other reputable broadcasters illegally, China can only earn the condemnation of freedom-loving Ethiopians who do not wish to see their liberty trampled upon by internal and external powers,” ESAT’s management said.

Article 29 of the current Ethiopian constitution stipulates: “Everyone has the right to freedom of expression without any interference. This right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any media of his choice.” But the Meles regime is widely known for violating basic rights with impunity.

ESAT has been forced to change satellite service providers at least four times in the last one year. It started broadcasting its programs to Ethiopia on Arabsat but was forced off air due to intense signal interference and diplomatic pressure. Similarly, an effort to continue broadcasting on Thaicon was interrupted after a few months, once again, due to intense diplomatic pressure. But ESAT’s tenacious management team continued transmissions on Intelsat, an American satellite company. While a diplomatic effort to disrupt ESAT transmissions failed, the Meles regime managed to jam ESAT’s signals using the jamming equipment provided by the Chinese government.

ESAT, the first independent TV station viewed by millions of Ethiopians, has reiterated its commitment to making every effort to continue its transmissions and find ways of overcoming the Sino-Ethiopia jamming and censorship project.

ESAT, which has studios in Amsterdam, Washington DC and London, is currently transmitting 24/7 on ABS1 Satellite, C-Band at 75 East Downlink: 3.480 GHz Vertical (3480), Symbol: 1.852 Msps (1852), FEC 2/3. It has plans to transmit on a Ku-Band and shortwave radio with a view to reaching wider audience in Ethiopia. ESAT also webcasts its transmissions on www.ethsat.com.

  1. Hey Guys! Woyane is getting billions of dollars not only from China but also from the United States, UK, Germany, France and Russia. All these countries donate to the tyrant every year; in return the Woyane administration can do whatever it wants to do: exterminate the people, displace the people, sell lands to Arabs and Indians, arrest and torture the people and jam free press like ESAT just to name a few. Like the minority Allwatis of the corrupt Syrian regime, the minority ethnic apartheid regime of Woyane controls 98% of the military and the security apparatus of the country. Woyanes also dominate in the country’s economy. So, it is highly unlikely to overthrow this minority ethnic regime in the foreseeable future.

  2. The only solution is to start a strong campaign of boycotting Chinese products in America and Europe right away.
It is important this campaign be executed with many other American and European peace, democracy and labour activists.
There are many groups who will take this very seriously.
With good strategy this can expand to Africa and Latin America like a wild fire.

  3. Absolutely correct to boycot chinese product is one way to punish and like the previous comentar we have to start it in Europe and America

    Mandefro shousa
no matter the world money will save woyanne from being hunted in the near future and the looted Ethiopian money and resource will be brought back and all the players will pay back for
their misdeeds in the last 20 woyanne occupying years

  4. Is that not hypocracy?!……. Aheyaw’n Ferto Dawlaw’n!!!….
Why boycot Chinese product but not US product when it’s indeed the US who finances, arms & use its dilomatic clout to help damage-limit for weyane for all weyane’s dispicable crime. I think that is a classic example of “barking at the wrong tree”……
Besides, everything is Chinese product…. you can’t escape from it……from q your Mbl phones, laptops & gadgets to all ur garments & kids’ toys…..lol
Yeah!!!!…..the US is the real culprit but China is a convenient escape-goat….
Hope u wake up one day with ur eyes wide open…..

  5. @Mandefeo Shusa… #2
it’s nice mentioning that land is being sold to only “The Arab & Indians”….. But would you be surprised to learn that out of the over 900 lands sold to foreign investors, only less than 10% of it is to the Arabs & Indians….. The rest is sold to Uncle Sam & its Weatern Allies including the former white farmers of Zimbabwe. But nobody dares mention it…. Again the Arabs & the Indians are a very convenient escape-goats……
You lot need real independence from within before embarking on any venture……
    All the best!!!…..

  7. Shaebia,
I am not surprised with your comment above. It appears that, unconsciously, you find yourself defending the Arabs and China: both these countries have been the back bone support of EPLF-ELF.Is it then an accident for you to bash Ethiopians for what you called “AHIYAWIN SIFERU DAWILAWEN”.True, The U.S made blunder when, without enough evidence, it decided to support the two twins-the Shabian-Weyane axis.Neverthless, I can say when certain conditions are met the U.S is willing to drop the tribailst Parthia any moment.

What those conditions are I am not willing to state it here.
Even though you though we need to criticize the U.S, there is no evidence to support the U.s assisting weyane to block internet or any news reaching Ethiopians.Regardless,of what you feel ,still the U.S is the leading democratic nation in the planet. I made the above statement
Fully aware of your deep suspicion about U.S.I think, you need not to be obsessed with the U.S.Instead ask yourself why is your country in the predicament she is in? Is it the result of U.S policy or a result of the incompetent dictator in Asmara?

  8. In Sudan, genocide anew?

By Eric Reeves, Published: June 17, 2011 The Washington Post
We are, once again, on the verge of genocidal counterinsurgency in Sudan. History must not be allowed to repeat itself. By early 2004, it was clear that the ideologically Arabist and Islamist regime in Khartoum was waging a genocidal counterinsurgency war throughout the western region of Darfur. Yet months passed before a broad range of human rights, government and academic voices said as much, even as the consequences of silence and inaction were conspicuous. In February 2004 I argued on this page that a “credible peace forum must be rapidly created. Immediate plans for humanitarian intervention should begin. The alternative is to allow tens of thousands of civilians to die in the weeks and months ahead in what will be continuing genocidal destruction.” This prediction was borne out in the months that followed, the most destructive phase of the Darfur genocide, in which African tribal groups were mercilessly targeted by soldiers and militias. Sadly, mortality from war-related causes continues to mount. But now we are debating how many hundreds, not tens, of thousands have perished from war-related causes in Darfur. Today, another episode of genocidal counterinsurgency is beginning in another part of Sudan. Absent a vigorous international response, there will almost certainly be a reprise of ethnically targeted human destruction in the middle of the country, specifically within the Nuba Mountains region of South Kordofan, which has a rich mixture of African inhabitants. Sudan was ravaged by a north-south civil war from 1983 to 2005; the war nominally ended with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, signed by Khartoum and the southern Sudan People’s Liberation Movement. But key terms of the agreement were never fulfilled, among them “popular consultations” that were to give the people of South Kordofan a voice in how they were governed. The armed wing of the liberation movement was especially strong in the Nuba Mountains, and Khartoum saw a threat that it was determined to eliminate. On June 5 a military campaign began in South Kordofan. It has rapidly escalated in ferocity, and disturbing accounts have emerged of the African people of the Nuba being rounded up in house searches and road checkpoints, and subjected to indiscriminate aerial bombardment. All signs point to a new genocide. It will be similar to the 1990s, when Khartoum declared a jihad against the peoples of the Nuba (who practice a range of religions, including Islam). Because the Nuba Mountains are not geographically contiguous with South Sudan (with which the area is militarily, politically and culturally allied), its people were largely left to fend for themselves. Then, the regime imposed a total blockade of humanitarian assistance from the south. Many starving Nuba were forced into “peace camps,” where receiving food was conditional upon conversion to Islam. Some who refused were tortured or mutilated. Khartoum’s decade-long campaign killed and displaced hundreds of thousands. Today, reports from the ground and wire services detail heavy fighting underway in Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan, and surrounding areas. There are multiple reports (including photos) of military aircraft such as MiG-29s attacking deep in the mountains; on Wednesday these attacks destroyed the key runway at Kauda, critical for transporting humanitarian supplies into the Nuba, a disturbing sign of how Khartoum will carry out the genocide. Nearly all humanitarian operations in the region have ceased, as Khartoum denies the United Nations air clearances; workers for the U.N. Mission in Sudan have been evacuated or confined to their base. On June 8 that base was raided by Khartoum’s military intelligence, and the United Nations was effectively disabled. Khartoum’s actions come just days after regime forces seized Abyei, whose indigenous residents are overwhelmingly Dinka Ngok and see themselves as part of the south. The 2005 peace agreement promised them a referendum for self-determination, which Khartoum has aborted. Last month the regime launched a military attack to seize Abyei; the U.N. High Commission for Refugees reports that some 113,000 civilians have fled south — virtually the entire Ngok population. They are living in extremely difficult conditions, and many will die. A U.N. report found that Khartoum’s actions were “tantamount to ethnic cleansing,” a decisive phrase that senior U.N. officials excised from later versions of the text. The U.N. Security Council demanded on June 3 that Khartoum immediately withdraw its forces from Abyei, but the regime scoffed — as it has at previous council demands, including those bearing on Darfur. This is bad news for the people of Abyei and for the prospects of a just and peaceful separation of Sudan’s north and south, which is scheduled for July 9. For the Nuba people, such fecklessness spells catastrophe. Too often with Sudan, empty demands and threats signal to the regime that the world is not serious about halting atrocities. Either the international community gets serious about preventing further violence in Abyei and the adjacent region of South Kordofan, or we will again see “tens of thousands of civilians . . . die in the weeks and months ahead in what will be continuing genocidal destruction.”

  10. Anonymous says:

Ethiopia was colonize for five years by Italy, democracy starts but been true to yourself, you can’t change history and make your own story!

Anonymous: Ethiopia has never been colonized, but occupied by Italy for five years. What you don’t know is the difference between the two words, colonization and occupation. Now you know, I tell you this. During those occupation years Italy had a difficult time to bring the country under control. If you are Eritrean (which I suspect), in comparison, your people submitted to Italian subjugation, oppression, segregation, colonization for 50 years, you name it. It is you who deny your humiliation/colonization by Italians and not Ethiopians. When you are telling Ethiopians about their colonization by Italy, you think you are telling the truth and that also makes you feel good for some reason. Unlike you, sir, no one is rewriting history here. That is what it is and it is the truth. If it is a difficult truth to swallow, hard luck.

Unlike Ethiopian, you (Eritreans) never shot a single bullet against the Italians in all those years. It all started with the shooting of Italian racist business owners in Asmara and elsewhere by soldiers of Haile Sellassie and their corpses left to rot in the streets as a lesson to the colonizers. Heard of this? If not, it is like as they say, “Yemilushin besemash gebeya balwetash”. You should be ashamed of yourself and what you said.

Why talk about 5 years of Ethiopian colonization when you are actually blessed with 50 years of Italian colonization? Please stop talking non-sense and know thy self well first before talking about others.

If I am wrong, I stand to be corrected.

  11. Elias I agree with your call for boycot of China product. Especially this problem become now serious. The sad news is that today (June 21st) China support of jamming ESAT going strong and they are successfully disturb & stop the transmission. You can read ESAT press release: http://www.ethsat.com/PDF/ESAT_press_release_21_June_2011.pdf
After this I am now convinced and start to boycot any China products starting from today I start to campaign in my city and other European cities and tell the Ethiopian and other African countries citizen to boycot China products.

Elias you should also co-ordinate Ethiopian Diaspora to call for Ethiopian in Addis and other town to boycot China products. So Ethiopian dispora in North America and Europe should moblise its force to boycot China products. This is the simple favour we Ethiopian diaspora should do to our fellow Ethiopian who have been denied information about the world. If China continue support of jamming ESAT we should increase our pressure the call for boycot of China product not only in Ethiopia but to other African countries and we should never give up.
