Is Walmart bribing Ethiopian officials?

Editor’s Note:

Is Walmart working with corrupt Ethiopian officials?  According to the New York Times, giant US retailer has been caught bribing Mexican officials to the tune of $24 million dollars. Bribery and partnership with ruling party-owned businesses is a must for doing business in Ethiopia.  What is Walmart doing in one of the poorest countries in the world?  We call on Walmart to come clean and disclose its dealings in Ethiopia.

Walmart might be coming to Ethiopia

By Tigrai Online

Walmart, the US multinational retailer corporation that runs chains of large discount department stores and warehouse stores, and the Ethiopian government are conducting negotiating on the question of the former entering the Ethiopian market, it was learnt. According to sources, an Ethiopian delegation was in Washington DC last week to discuss the matter with officials of Walmart.

The negotiations started while Walmart got the go-ahead with its 2.2 billion dollars purchase of a controlling share in a South African chain, Massmart, earlier this month.

The move to invite Walmart came as a result of last year’s squabble between the government and local wholesalers and retailers following unprecedented commodity prices’ surge in the market. At the time the government blamed the wholesalers for artificially creating a price hike and took the populist yet controversial price cap measure.

Furthermore, the government issued a three-stage ultimatum of which one is inviting foreign companies into the market. After the lifting of the cap, the government undertook a measure to directly intervene in the market. However, the third option, which is inviting foreign companies, was considered by many to be highly unlikely and would not materialize.

Walmart, which was founded by Sam Walton, is the world’s 18th largest public corporation, according to the Forbes Global 2000 list, and the largest public corporation when ranked by revenue. It is also the biggest private employer in the world with over two million employees, and is the largest. The company is controlled by the Walton family, one of the richest families in the world, whose combined wealth is estimated to be close to 100 billion dollars. The family owns a 48 percent stake in Walmart.

  1. When a country is heavily indebted to the IMF and is unable to repay its debts, pressure is mounted on the government to allow giant multinational companies like Walmart to set up sweatshops in the country and use cheap labor to manufacture goods in order for the debt to be repaid.

For example, following a decade of dictatorship in Bangladesh characterized by rampant corruption and political oppression, the country’s debt to the IMF had reached $12 billion dollars by the time the dictator was toppled in 1990.

The World Bank and the IMF imposed the burden of the debt on the Bangladeshi people, and today, nearly two decades later, workers at Walmart’s factories in Bangladesh are made to work up to 19-hour shifts and paid as little as $20 a month manufacturing the goods that is sold at Walmart discount stores in order to repay their country’s debt.

Usually when Walmart sets up sweatshops in Third world countries it also opens up stores that kill the local small businesses unable to compete with the discount giant. India is a prime example of this problem.

The main reason Walmart wants to set up sweatshops in Ethiopia is because woyanes have submerged the country in debt up to its neck!

  2. We told you there are millions of reason to hate the most corrupt, cursed Meles Woyane. Woyane would love to work with foreign multinational coorporations to get bribes than to work with its citizen. TPLF is woyane is a curse of the century. Woyane might even bring Aliens from other planets and take money from them and sell the land, the market and everything. I repeat, woyane is a curse of the century. I repeat woyane is a curse and Woyane Meles has to be dismantled like derg before it totally annililate Ethiopia.

Walmart, the most known corrupt and low paying and a multination American coorporation that does not respect the international labour law and a Company known for its known its subhuman treatment of its worker now entering Ethiopia? Woynie, woynie, a curse TPLF. How can TPLF end up the most cursed organisation after all that sacrifice of spending 17 years in an open air , living in forest and caves with no water, food, anything. How? I can imagine? Walmat entering Ethiopia? This is the most disgraceful ever I can say.

For the devil, and most cursed creature Meles this is GTP? I hope Meles will die some sort of natural illness and die before he destroys the country. He is defiling ancient county and he is making sure the people slaves. A man who said he was in the bush for many years now is rushing to make slaves of modern age. He is running as if there is one day tomorrow for him to do thinngs. He is running selling the land, the water, the national assets, the market, the girls, the childern? you name it, is there anything this man is not selling? There is no anything Meles is not selling? What is not on sale now is his wife Azeb, his sons and daughter. I repeat Meles is a visible seitan who believe in money and he can do anything for money. What a devil. I can not believe the corrupt and inhuman multination American coorporation controlling Ethiopians what to wear and what to eat? No more dressing Ethiopian attire, no more Ethiopian bread? no more, we told you if something is not done, the man will never stop he is crime. he is born to do anything to get money. What I do not understsand what is fela going to do with the money after destroying and selling everything in the country? What is he going to do? is he going to get buried with the money?

Shame Meles = you are the most disgraceful = immoral = wicked human. This time to appreciate Mengistu Hailemariam who used to wear Kaki and who used to promote local market with his little knowledge. Imagine, Mengistu did not even graduate from high school but he still had many good things and he tried to empower and educate people to promote local market.

Meles the cursed one, he is selling everything the country ever had. This is what I tell you. Meles has to be removed by national pubic disobedience than by targetting Tigreans for him to give him more shelter. Now the big companies will prottect him. He is inviting them not to benefit Ethiopia but to make sure he will get suppport to rule unit he dies. After Walmart and other American Companiees enter Ethiopia, It is will naive to think Meles will be removed easily. Reason, all these foreign companies will do everything to protect the corrupt regime to protect thier business.

Meles is not inviting to benefit Ethiopia. He is inviting them to protect his power. I am affraid, after Meles, his daughter will be the prime minister. That is what this companies are going to make sure their business is protected.

Whether you believe me or not, Ethiopia is gone now. Soon you will hear Telecom, commercial bank,… will be sold to any cheap bidder. I told you, Ethiopia is gone forever now. I curse Berhanu Nega, and kinjit in general, for allowing and give a lease of life to destroy the country. This blood, selfish, corrupt Eritrean fela must have been removed 15 years ago. He is not normal. He is a sick man. He is a prostitute who can sleep with anyone who has money.

I sympathize with the people of Ethiopia who found them in this predicament. This is a big curse for the country. Walmart is the most insane company that know for abusing human being in North America. The most corrupt company that does not respect any human right. The most low paying company.

  3. I call up on all Ethiopian inside and outside for national public disobedience. Woyane has ear to hear. Woyane has no eyes to see. Todays woyane is blind because of money either through bribe or theft or any form. Walmart is known North America for violating human rights. It does not respect international labour. I am sorry to hear this news. My heart is broken. Woyane has alot of things in store to upset Ethiopians.

Now Ethiopians will be controlled by the Walmart family in America. Wallmart will control what Ethiopians should wear and eat. They will control everything. Woyane is doing to stay on power so that the multination coorporation will have a stake in their Ethiopian affaires because of their investment.

We told you that IMF was saying Ethiopia is developing. They were lying. It is their tactic of controlling woyane through thier debt. Soon we will hear Ethiopian bank and Telecom and others sold to American coorporation.

Woyane is a disgrace for the nation. I think we need to say this enough. That is why I was asking Ethiopians to unite and to say no nationally. After this interested group has set their foot in Ethiopia, it will be hard to remove woyane. This interested group will do everything to prottect the corrupt regime. Reason: simply they have to protect their business. So if we struggle after now, the struggle double, a struggle to dislodge the American Companies and a struggle to remove the corrupt regime. Our struggle will double. You must know, Americans govennment will do everything to protect American companies in Ethiopia after American companies are established in Ethiopia. That is their interest. The democracy jini junkka is false. There is no democracy anywhere. Walmart makes poor work with no rules on it.

Ethiopians will be the slave of one American family? shame on us, shameful generation we allowed all these to happen in our country.

  4. Hi Elias this is the only point that I agree with you recently. Walmart is a bad idea for Ethiopia. It will monopolise all the import and retail market.Lots of Ethiopian business people with good income will lose their bussiness. It will be harder and harder to start a descent bussiness.Walmart is denied licanse in many counties in the US bucause it kills local bussiness and monopolises everything. I do not critisize woyanes blindly, but here it is a wrong call to invite walmart.

    peace replies:

It is people like you who are propping TPLF indeed you admited. What if it turns out that is your family who will be enslaved by Walmart then you will wish you never supported TPLF. What goes around comes around

  5. Lema i think you just woke up sleeper

    lema replies:

    goge, what do you mean?
I closely follow Ethiopian affairs and woyanes have been making sound economic policies until this twist to the worse. It is really ill advised policy and I wish the agreement with Walmart collapse.I am against neo-liberal policies and this is the reason I don’t support the economic policy of doctor Nega.

  6. The Indians fought off Walmart from coming to their country. The company Reliance, owned by the the brothers Ambanis (who by the way are heavy investors in Hollywood) control India. They are the Al-Amoudis of India, but Al-Amoudi is a foreign man as far as Ethiopians are concerned. Walmart buys $75 millions of cheap China stuff every single day. Instead of encouraging Americans to produce quality stuff for low prices and create employment here, Walmart sends all that money to China. Speaking of China, here is a picture of today’s China in the Opionion Column of Nicholas D. Kristoff’s, dated April 21, 2012 on the ongoing scandal of Politburo’s Bo Xilai, titled A Body, a Scandal and China:

Even good people are on the take in China these days, because everybody else is. Chinese doctors take cash from patients’ families before surgery. Journalists take bribes to write articles. Principals take money to admit students. One Chinese friend of mine was a judge in corruption cases, and made a good living taking bribes from defendants. Another friend, the son of a Politburo member, was paid several hundred thousand dollars a year simply to lend his name to a real estate company. Officials have a maddening sense of entitlement. When I lived in China, my wife and I once attended a party with many middle-age officials (including one now in the Politburo) and a crowd of trophy female secretaries. One cabinet minister mistook my wife, who is Chinese-American, for a secretary and crassly made moves on her. Let’s just say that my wife ruined his evening. The scale of corruption has become mind-boggling. Zhang Shuguang, a railways official, managed to steal $2.8 billion and move it overseas, the state news media have reported. A Chinese central bank report suggested that 18,000 corrupt officials had fled China and taken $120 billion with them. The average take was almost $7 million per person. The backdrop is the staggering wealth enjoyed by the elite. More than 300 million Chinese lack access to safe water, but one tycoon’s home I visited had an indoor basketball court, a movie theater and a pond with rare fish worth up to tens of thousands of dollars each. In Chinese, the words for power (“quan”) and money (“qian”) sound alike, and in China one often translates into another. The rumors, which I can’t confirm, are that Bo Xilai’s wife was moving money abroad through the British businessman, Neil Heywood, and that they bickered over his fee. When he threatened to expose her, the theory goes, she arranged to have him poisoned. This is mostly rumor: Bo’s defenders think he is being framed by his political rivals. China’s political system has managed daunting challenges, but it is showing serious cracks. For years, reformist leaders from Li Ruihuan to Wen Jiabao have been arguing for political reform, and party officials themselves increasingly see the need for more accountability and oversight.

    Rule of Law replies:

    Highly refreshing information. Thanks!

  8. I am so sorry to hear this bad news

It’s a bad news for Ethiopians. We don’t need a giant like walmart in our country. we have to resist with all our power. Most American big & small business areas are closed because of Walmart. It outcompetes all small retail shops and drive them out of business.

  9. Now, you are making sense. But remember who put Meles in that palace first and most? Globalization is nothing but the power of the rich, and you got it it is neo colonization of the 21 st century.

Clear now you lamented on Al Amoudin but he is more than a Saudi agent. Here is the new game: take it or leave it. Do you need IMF or not. That is it.

  10. Walmart is the best thing that happened to Ethiopia in centuries.

Tesaye (A-Agame) is not only Ph.D (physical disabled) but he is also mentally sick. He does not know what he writes. Foregive him!

  11. I was working at WALMART and passed through its extreme exploitation. WALMART is the worst company to work in. Most of blood sucking profits are through the exploitation of employees. Around 85% employees are with out any benefits, like health insurance. One of the strategy of WALMART is to suspend its employees as part time to erode their confidence through low income earning. Employees at WALMART are like machines and animals. Suprisingly, the hourly payment for the entry level employee is less than the payee scale of SEVEN ELEVEN. Usually, WALMART SAVOTAGELY CONCEAL the employee bonuses to aggregately accumulate its surplus/expanding profits.

Currently, WALMART has planned to open store/branches in Washington, DC AROUND 4-6 stores. The DC government officials are not happy with its selfish accumulation of profits and worst working condition that forced WALMART to conceal the plan of opening stores, except ONE.

The world largest and the leading exploiter retailer is indirectly exploiting the resources of developing countries, now it is time for this exploitation hungry, WALMART, to create close ties with corruted leaders like Meles to directly drain the resources of the nation.

We should unite to struggle against the aggression of Parasite, WALMART!!!

    gragn ahmed replies:

Wall Mart is really wall mart. It is sued all the time by its employees. It is worest even by any standards of African companies and only Chinese are happy about it. But it is better than nothing at least by inviting walmart we can send goods to other less fortunate Africans. It is sad reality unless we become respectful of our citizens we fall prey to outsiders. African are thinking in the jungle way. Unless we embrace democracy we will never be a happy nation.

  12. There are many American companies who are ethical and responsible, but Walmart is not one of them.

Anonymous you are a sale out who doesn’t understand English, what is a YELLOW CAP? You don’t need to live in this world, you stupid.

    abdi replies:

anonymous, My god why don’t you read what you want to say before posting it? People like you with this kind of brain live in the West, stupid. A lot of people in the world know how Walmart kills local small businesses. Only morons like you don’t understand, you are just supporting the government but your knowledge about this issue is almost zero. Why don’t you try to learn from other people? I hope you get it.

Now it is the turn of businesses in Ethiopia to get squashed by Woyane’s brutal system. They better start fighting for their survival like all others.

  13. Even the Zimbabweans have surpassed the ever-vexing Ethiopian problem with an ingenuity, overcoming their long infamous inflation problems. With their leader, Mugabe, on death bed, bad politics, shunned by the West and a chronic poverty, who knew changing the currency, Walmart or no Walmart, would change the game. The West must be enjoying the Ethiopian problem like a chimp show. The chimps would never solve the puzzle on thier own. Did Azeb say her husband’s brain is enough to bring the dough – forget about the corruption …? What can Michelle Obama say, when her husband bring the Presidency, the Nobel Prize and much more….

When Zimbabweans say they are waiting for change, they are usually talking about politics. After all, the country has had the same leader since 1980. But these days, Robson Madzumbara spends a lot of time quite literally waiting around for change. Pocket change, that is. He waits for it at supermarkets, on the bus, at the vegetable stall he runs and just about anywhere he buys or sells anything. “We never have enough change,” he said, manning the vegetable stall he has run for the past two decades. “Change is a big problem in Zimbabwe.” For years, Zimbabwe was infamous for the opposite problem: mind-boggling inflation. Trips to the supermarket required ridiculous boxloads of cash. By January 2009, the country was churning out bills worth 100 trillion Zimbabwean dollars, which were soon so worthless they would not buy a loaf of bread (the notes now circulate on eBay, as gag gifts). But since Zimbabwe started using the United States dollar as its currency in 2009, it has run into a surprising quandary. Once worth too little, money in Zimbabwe is now worth too much. “For your average Zimbabwean, a dollar is a lot of money,” said Tony Hawkins, an economist at the University of Zimbabwe. Zimbabweans call it “the coin problem.” Simply put, the country hardly has any. Coins are heavy, making them expensive to ship here. But in a nation where millions of people live on a dollar or two a day, trying to get every transaction to add up to a whole dollar has proved a national headache. Still, the new predicament is an improvement. By virtually wiping out inflation, analysts say, use of the United States dollar saved Zimbabwe from total economic collapse and brought the country back from the brink. The country’s political future remains deeply unsettled since the disputed 2008 election gave way to a shaky power-sharing government. But its economy is growing, if from a very low base. Zimbabweans have devised a variety of solutions to get around the change problem, none of them entirely satisfactory. At supermarkets, impulse purchases have become almost compulsory. When the total is less than a dollar, the customer is offered candy, a pen or matches to make up the difference. Some shops offer credit slips, a kind of scrip that has begun to circulate here…. According to the United States Federal Reserve, at least five countries have officially adopted the United States dollar as their currency. Several more, like Zimbabwe, use it almost exclusively but hold on to a national currency, even if it is not in circulation. But United States coins seldom circulate more than 100 miles beyond the country’s borders because of their weight and high shipping costs. Most countries that use the dollar get around this problem by minting local coins: Ecuador uses the dollar as legal tender but mints centavo coins. The government guarantees that anyone who wants to exchange 100 Ecuadorean centavos for a genuine United States dollar can do so. But that requires confidence in the local government, something that is in even shorter supply here than coins. Zimbabweans say they want no legal tender issued by their government….

  14. Funny that most Ethiopian compare as if Ethiopia is equal to America and all workers there have health care. I dont support Melese and his selling of land to foreigners with no good intention for the country. But if walmarkt enter the market, I dont know the impact but it doesnt look good.

  15. I was working at Walmart 3 years ago. It is the largest, world leader retailer, but the most grave exploiter as well. The Walmart store management is the management of corruption. The mgt know how to steal in collaboration of shoplifters or fictitiously arranged thiefs. You have to be 24 available to get a chance of hiring, even part time job, so that be tied up with low level income so that you have no chance of going nowhere, more than 90% of employees are no benefits, including health insurance. Look the world largest company its revenue larger than the GDP OF Spain or Esrael has no employee benefits. Walmart self expanding surplus/profits at the expense of employees!!

Promotion is based on unfair relation with management rather than your performance. There is well established system of employee appraisal, but the practical application of employee evaluation is totally filled with mischief to with hold pay increase. If you personal relation with the mgt you will be promoted at the spot even if you was in probation period. If Walmart do business with corrupted leaders like Meles, it will drain our country resources and mobilize to the intended destination like its ancestors colonization/neocolonization era. It is not business with Meles it is the intention to colonize our country, even if it was failed during Italy occupation!!! Ethiopia is for Ethiopians, not for colonizers, Avoid Walmart!!!

    peace replies:

What you just commented is “music for TPLF/Meles’ ears” What more could they want two corrupts meeting, the house is on fire.

  16. Walmart a huge decayed monopoly, known for its ability to remove competitors out of the business. Especially in Ethiopia market to which there is almost no established laws of business/competitors, or fair business practices, Walmart would throw our local cometitors out business automatically. We know even in America the fate of businesses in neiboring Walmart, that is why walmart’s plan to open new store in Washington, DC UP TO 6 STORES, FINALLY ENDED UP to only 1.

WALMART’s AD —Save money live better, is at the expense of developing countries!!!

    Block exploiter, resource hungry Walmart!!

  17. What a way to finish BAD GOVERNANCE after 20+ yrs.
From Stalin’s cheerleadership to Sam Walton bootlicking.
Walmart is the worst of capitalism.
Woyane is the worst tyranny worst traitor
At the final hour only woyaneyans 4 woyaneyans
Walmart will do the imperial damage with pennies paid (bribes) to the cheap running dogs of Africa’s de facto “state reperesentstives” not qualified to be called leaders.
Shame and disgrace for Africa to bear such sycophant, ignorant and certified killers who came out of the jungle under the tutelage of Bush (USA) and Blair (England)
Inviting Walmart – among many misdeeds and crimes is the ultimate example of hypocrisy and revolutionary phrase-mongering.

ETHIOPIA AND THE ETHIOPIANS SHALL TRIUMPH!

  18. Definitely, some TPLF member will monopolize Walmart in Ethiopia and will kill the businesses of small retailers that existed for years serving the public. Such as many Merkato business owners. This will result massive loss of business and unemployment. This will be crime against humanity. We will be told to wear and busy Wlamart chinese made products while Ethiopia’s products will be in shambles or better will be taken over by Walmart. What a shame. Is TPLF reading the news that is coming from Mexico and the investigation of Walmart?

  19. All Woyane wanted is money. Woyane does not care if Walmart is devil or anger. If they get money, they can sleep with them like a prostitute. You know a prostitute? A prostitute can even sleep with a terminally ill man if he has money. TPLF can sleep with a dead body if it gets money. TPLF does not care about corruption or Ethiopia. All they care is money, money, money, TPLF is burning like fire with a desire for money. Desire is like a fire that can burn human being like flame. TPLF is burning with unsatiable fire of desire and wantonness? Money, money, money, money, …. TPLF is crazy with money.I am affraid all TPLF politbiru will become mad with their desire for money. You know even money can make you crazy if you do not say I have enough. You wanted more and more and you become mad at the end.

  20. People, TPLF is brilliant. It is for sure will materialize its dreams. While it is spreading propoganda putting Oromos against Amara, it is campaigning in West and East for its survival, it will lead for over 100 years through the support of outsiders. Its dream will materialize because if they continue to allow powerful multinational corporations into the country tplf will thrive because multi national corporations have become more than humans. Not only humans, corporations have become more than American people. Supreme court are supporting them. Therefore, if they don’t care for American people, do the corporatons care for Ethiopians? No. Therefore, the lobbying power of corporations not only will protect TPLF, it will stop every diaspora from attempting to oppose TPLF and in fact Ethiopians in the diaspora or in Ethiopia might even be labeled as terrorists soon as corporations continue to sleep with TPLF. So who is a threat for TPLF? It is the Amaras first then Oromos. So far, they have held off Oromos through OLF promising them Oromia. It is the Amaras who believe in one Ethiopia. TPLF have also realized that Tigray nor Eritrea will not survive without the rest of Ethiopia. So, TPLF, by allowing multinational coproations to come in entire Amara, Oromo and SNNP, Ogaden, regions, etc. except perhaps Tigray and Eritrea, now, the people of these regions will completely be enslaved by the corporations let alone do arm resistance against TPLF. TPLF is now ready to form its Greater Tigray as the fate of Issayas will be known soon. The court is on TPLF’s side. Tigray and Eritrea will be developed with sustainability and with the involvement of their own people socialistically, without multinational corporations inside Tigray or Eritrea. The rest of Ethiopia will completely be Banana Republic like Panama. Panamanians are enslaving and working only for multinational corporations and Panama is no longer for Panamanians. The bank, water, electricity, every municipal, business, etc, is controlled by foreigners. TPLF will also continue to get mass funding for the developemnt of Greater Tigray as well, which will expedite the formation of its own nation, “Tigray”. With multinational corporations in the rest of Ethiopia, there is absolutely nothing poor, and hungry Ethiopians can do and weak diaspora can do against corporations.

  21. Continuing from my above comment, TPLF’s second challenge after Amara is Oromo because OLF wants Oromia. As the Greater Tigray is being formed right in their own eyes, the OLF is considering aha, then the time for secession is also here for Oromia, in fact OLF will continue to encourage TPLF. What the OLF doesn’t realize is that what is going on in the rest of Ethiopia including Oromia. While Tigray is developing and indpendent, Oromia now has multinational corporations on their land rather than “Oromia”. Of course TPLF and the corporations will appoint Oromos to make it look like Oromia is now being lead by Oromo, really? This means Oromos got check mated all these years waiting for Ormomia and helpig tPLF campaign against Amara when they got nailed themselves. So there is no one to blame but themselves. OLF used to say Amara Amara, and now they are branding Tigray also by calling Abyssinia the colonizer, without blaming now themsleves that they are the ones who propped TPLF so that worst could happen to Oromos and that is colonization by outsiders. Is there any shame than taht? While calling their own brethren amaras colonizers, rather than rising up for equality, they will end up being colonized by outsiders. Once again, the fate of well being of Oromos or Amaras is the unity of those ethnic groups. There is a reason that OLF has its worst night mares, the group they hate, Amara. God always says, what makes one enlightened is to turn to the one you resent the most, that is where solutions about your problem is found. Whether OLF resents or not, amara is its own fate and must work together. The same goes with Amaras. However, once it is found that these groups are working together, we will soon find more atrocities being committed against them to divide them even fruther by outsiders and TPLF. Amaras and Oromos must make history once again. Oromos must form their own party and should not wait OLF that is allowing Oromia to be colonized.

    Long live Ethiopia!

  22. Many Woyannes have been profiting by buying items from Walmart and selling it in Ethiopia. For example Rahel from Ethiopia Playmates Hearts for Hearts Doll is being sold for close to two thousand dollars in Ethiopia while Walmart is selling Rahel for only $29.99. The fact that Walmart is being opened in Ethiopia will bring price reduction for the buyers.
