Journalist accompanying Meles to New York defects

October 2nd, 2008 |  |  20 Comments

Deje Selam

An Ethiopian journalist accompanying Prime Minister dictator Meles Zenawi defected to seek asylum.

Shewangizaw Kassahun Shewangizaw Kassahun, special journalist at the Prime Minister’s office, national palace and parliament, who was also head of the Audio Visual department at the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), came to the US with premier to attend the annual global initiative of the Clinton Foundation and UN general assembly.

The journalist has attended the six days meeting with the premier and finished his final mission before leaving the group for good. Anonymous sources at the News Agency say Shewangizaw was a photo journalist and web editor very close to the palace. His defection has stunned the premiers group including his fellow journalists who never suspect him of failing to return home. His reason of defection is yet not known.

It is known that journalists working for government owned media ENA, ETV, Ethiopian Radio and Ethiopian Press Agency fail to return home if they get the chance to go abroad. This year alone not less than 10 journalists sought asylum in South Africa, Japan, England and USA. Shewangizaw adds the immigrating journalist number to over a dozen.

I don’t understand why ppl who hate this website keep coming back for more unsettling but true news, like the first Anon above. This is no Aiga forum or friendly Ben territory. This is real news. You don’t get lies 24/7 like ENA. If you cannot take the truth, stay away from this site, you godforsaken parasites.

Elias, keep up the good work.

What if he is just another HODAM. He was with Meles for his own sake, and now he used public money to move to a better place outside Ethiopia. All for himself.

For me these kind of people are more sickening than the dicatators themselves.

  13. koster says:

Woyane is doing everything in day-light from robbing the bank (Gold and Money) to killing innocent people to promote his ethinic politics and to make the WORKU tribe (TIGRE) superior to all like Hitlers arian (pure German) policy.

Some will realize and understand this evil politics earlier than the others and it is no wonder if this journalist took him to understand this.

There will be more defection until at the end Meles is removed like Saddam Hussien by those who installed him (the Anglo-Americans)

  17. Tadesse says:

He has been cooperating and propagating the woyane policy and helped them to stay in power for two decade.

Now he is trying to seek asylem because he new the woyane time is finishing and dreaming to apply for good position when the next government comes.

This is the problem these people has, they serve the worst dictetor and cooperated in killings directly and indirectly. Then after all these mess and blood they came out and say it is not me it is them … bla bla.

Why first of all as a professional he work for them … he is definetly “hodam” or he is woyane. Otherwise he can work independetly as well as for private company as a skilled professional for a living.

Anyways Elias thank you let us know this and I don’t agree with comment no.1

    Regards,

    Tadesse

  18. Mestewat says:

Freedom of conscience which is one of the supreme human welbeing is what this defector is looking for not really freedom from hunger. Look at how broadly the guy is smiling after achieving his long sought freedom of conscience and spiritual liberty. You must have been in shoes and experiencing his agonies in order to understand his feelings of liberty. There is no fun of working for a dictator committing massive human rights violations and commanding journalists to write completely false stories slandering and blaming the dead and displaced victims.

  20. Gedion says:

Ethiopia’s problems are its peoples not its leaders. Leaders, even the most sadistic killers such as PM Meles and his cohorts, are smart economists; they only take what they can get away with; they only kill what they can get away with. Meles progreesed upward the scale of sadism because we allowed it. Had he guaged that we would act decisively to punish him and his cohorts as a nation when he started pitting one ethnic group against the other, had he guadged that his attempt to buy one Ethiopian against the other would cause him and his cohorts to suffer brut punishment, he would have learned to govern Ethiopia fairly, legally, accountabily, for all Ethiopians. He would have then positioned himself to create tomorrow’s leaders that would rise up in the morning with the dream to build a nation for all its citizens. Then we would, as a antion be a force to reckon with. By failing as a nation to dictate the terms on which our leaders govern our country, we have failed our leaders. We have a result, turned Meles and his cohorts into Monsters that drink, breath, dine, bath, sleep, cough, poo, wee, walk, etc. the death of innocent Ethiopians, whichever tribe they may be from. God said to Cain, after Cain killed his brother Abel, (see Genesis 4:10-11) “the voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground. And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand”. While, we as a nation, can take responsibility for not acting in time to make sure that our leaders did not turn into the Monsters they currently are, we share no responsibility for their assassinations of Ethiopians. PM Meles and his corts are killing innocent Ethiopans in the name of all Tigray people. Every Tigray man and woman has a a responsibility to act to stop PM Meles and his cohorts from taking further lives, lest the voice of their brothers’ blood will cry to them all from the ground, and they all be cursed from the ground, which will opene its mouth to receive their brothers’ [and sisters'] blood from their hand. May God help us to live to our responsibilities. Amen.
