UPDATE
The Woyanne dictatorial regime today has arrested UDJ chairperson Birtukan Mideksa and attacked Prof. Mesfin Woldemariam, according to sources in Addis Ababa.
The attack on UDJ leaders came after the Federal Police gave Wzt. Birtukan 3 days to retract a statement she made in Sweden last month about not apologizing before being released from jail in July 2007.
It seems this is a gimmick since other former Kinijit leaders had said similar things. On top of that, the 4-page open later Birtukan released yesterday about the Federal Police’s ultimate is an indirect admission. She also wrote a letter yesterday to Aba Gebremedhin (formerly Aba Paulos) and Pastor Daniel.
By this action, Woyanne is succeeding in diverting the focus away from its retreat in defeat from Somalia, the recent genocidal attacks in Oganden where over 40 civilians were gunned down in one day, the unjust conviction of Teddy Afro, and other crimes it is committing.
Birtukan is the weakest of all the opposition figures in Ethiopia as far as criticizing the brutal dictatorship, but it is taking such measures against her knowing that it will create more news and deflect attention from the other issues mentioned above.
The attack on Prof. Mesfin Woldemariam is also a gimmick, since he has been preaching about taking soft stand toward Woyanne, such as not even calling the murderous gang an “enemy.” He has also been inactive as a UDJ executive committee member.
Once against, the opposition is walking to the tune played by Meles and gang.

First it was about whether she should retract her words or not. How can she retract her words and apologize again when EPRDF has made it a public matter? She could not and did not. The government has made a mistake here, it should not have broadcasted her case to get an apology it was seeking to use it for propaganda.
Whatever the reasons Birtukan told the whole story in her letter as it was i presume. She also showed her disappointment on this particular matter but did not go any further. Could she? May be she could have used this as an opportunity to bring back the Elderly who were involved in the negotiation process and expose the lies and deception.
This was directed to UDJ in particular and should have used it for their own propaganda.
What should have been the content of the letter, Mr Elias? a bold statment ie insult and abuse to her jailers?

She confirmed that they are signed the document that is enough for woyane.
She has admitted indirectly what they want .She tried to cover it by saying missunderstanding. I don’t understand why she mention two different dates ” first 11 and then 15 .Are they signed two times or what?.
She wanted to make happy her supporters but the consquence becomes another.

What can one do more than explaining the whole situation the way she did in her letter? you know how difficult and mean the so-called government is in Ethiopia. Meles is simply a Satan but in human body. That dwarf and ugly person will never sleep to work against Ethiopia unless his ugly head gets blown by a bullet.

she has been jailed. She actually made a big mistake. she knows that there is no rule of law in ethiopia. she knows that peaceful struggle just do not work in ethiopia. I was your website regular visitor and I do really some how agree with you most of the time specially with your argument with regard to peacefull struggle. I have been opposing others when they call for boycott of ER. Yet now i understand that you blindly oppose Birtukan and UDJ. I urge u too review you opinion and stop your irresponsible act.
I know you want an immediate end to the regim, since you are sentenced for lifetime in abstention. But please don’t write rubish. Look, weyane through her to kality. You have to use all your effort to help the struggle in a positive manner. Look at the other website. I think the Govt.. is trying to put an agenda that detracts the party members from their progressive activities i.e. organizing themselves, opening offices in the regions and their effort for future election at least to gain some ground for a peaceful change in that country.Birtukan I think has said what anyone couldn’t dare to say that made the regime fury tiger. Her response was reasonable as she was thought as Lawyer and as a former Judge.Please lets go forward and keep on our Job to repeat the 97 gain,Our plan and strategy should consider our capacity.

The latest news is that she was arrested by TPLF.
If this not a drama then what it is? First the reason why she was arrested by TPLF is the Pardon Paper. Second the accused and the accuser seems to have a lot of time to play a childish game.
Well let her enjoy her stay in Kaliti. This girl has no idea how the public see her: a stup##id amateur who knows nothing but dressing & arrogancy.
This is a distraction from our focus of getting rid of the Tyrannt.

It was clear that when UDJ has become more popular within and outside Ethiopia, the Melles regiome was quick to aware the threat to its survival. Birtukan was also very popular and she is the first chairwoman of a political organization in Ethiopian history. Moreover, she is from the largest ethnic group: the oromos. All these frustrated the Melles regiome and the 2005 defeat is still fresh in their mind. Therefore, it was pre-planned to arrest not only Birtukan but also professor Yacob a couple of months ago.
This time however, Melles can`t stand the diplomatic pressure. Secondly, international human right groups have already submitted a huge evidence of genocide in Somali region of Ethiopia and I think Melles will be the second “Al-Beshir” to be charged in genocide against humanity.

It is sad to see Ethiopia been reduced to the likes of Birtukan in its fight against the uncouth woyane. The only purpuse of this whole comedy, that Birtukan is playng along with is to make the filthy Meles look good. Ethiopia’s struggle against the woyane would have a better chance of succeeding if there were no politicians involved in it. The only consistency I have seen is from Eng. Hailu Shawl, the rest are just useless.
