Woyanne’s violent reaction to ER’s “Person of the Year”

January 5th, 2009 |  |  75 Comments

By Elias Kifle

It was easy to predict how cadres and supporters of the ruling Tigrean People Liberation Front (Woyanne) would react to Ethiopian Review’s choice of President Issayas Afeworki as “Person of the Year.” Woyannes have committed and continue to commit unspeakable atrocities against Ethiopians. Because they have no fear of and respect for the leaderless people of Ethiopia, they carry out their crimes with impunity. On the other hand, Meles and gang know what they did to Eritreans. The ethnic cleansing these Woyanne hyenas committed against 500,000 Eritreans is a crime against humanity and Meles, Seye and all those who participated in it will be brought to justice sooner or later by the lions of Eritrea. This is what keeps Woyannes sleepless at night. It is therefore expected that they would react extremely violently to the choice of Issayas Afeworki by the most popular Ethiopian online journal as “Person of the Year.” The messages I am receiving on my phone tells it all.

I have saved some of the death threats. Here are two of them (click below or here)

.
As you can hear, their voice is dripping with murderous hate and rage.
.
So far, Meles and his tribal gang have succeeded in identifying and eliminating genuine leaders of Ethiopia such as Prof. Asrat Woldeyes. A people without powerful leaders are easily subjugated by criminal elements like Woyanne. People who have determined, pragmatic, smart leaders can fend off against any force. We have seen it in Somalia. A group of determined leaders with a clear vision of what they want (removal of the Woyanne invading forces from their country) did not need more than 3,000 fighters to crush the 300,000 strong Woyanne army.
.
What Ethiopians at the moment lack is such leaders. Fortunately, there are some who are emerging now, such as the EPPF and Ginbot 7 leaders whose movements are gaining momentum, thanks, in part, to the assistance provided by the government of Eritrea. As Somali freedom fighters succeeded in defeating the Woyanne army with the assistance of Eritrea’s government and Somalis in the Diaspora, so will Ethiopian freedom fighters. That is the path to victory against Woyanne.
.
Regarding the death threats I am receiving, they will hear it back when they sit in a court room to defend themselves against charges of war crimes soon. Please do continue to leave me your messages. Here is my number: 202 369 9543.

First of all, anyone who insults someone like that is someone with absolutely no potential in society and in their personal life, I can hate someone to the extent of nuclear level but I will never go around and insult like that, as a matter of fact, you seem that you are not men enough and Ethiopian enough to criticize Elias, can you imagine what kind of words did you use? I wish I know what you will do if you ever face Elias face to face, maybe you will piss on your pants because you are so empty and completely wild animal with no common sense, anyways, you are part of the disrespectful and inhuman generation created by woyannes that put mothers and fathers in ordeals ripping off their white hair pride, i would not expect any maturity from thugs like you and the guy who tried to speak in English, pleaseeeeee, it doesn’t really look good on you, it was like chimpanzee trying to learn human language not even english, the second guy, I assure you that you ain’t got the guts because when you call someone motherfucker being an Ethiopian, its like you have fucked your mother first because I already know that you have already fucked your mother country. Stupid woyanne coward, try to come in DC demonstrations and try to say the same words, we will eat you alive infront of the white house

  3. George says:

This shows the growing cooperation between the Eritreans and the Ethiopian oppostion forces coupled with the defeat in Somalia is driving these tplf thugs and their collaborators insane. This is not surprising, it is a normal reaction of a criminal. One cannot expect a civilised response from a criminal. They are well aware that they are loosing their last playing card, which is keeping the Ethiopian and Eritrean people divided and apart. Good job Elias, give them hell. It won’t be long before the heroic Ethiopian opposition forces march to Addis and discard these bandits into the dust bin of history.

  5. Eritrawi says:

This is what happens when Woyanne hyenas get hit where it hurts the most, they are enraged because Mr. Elias is the first Ethiopian who runs a media site who challenged Woyanne and the other so called aimless and visionless opposition groups. As for Woyanne cadres, they can see the alliance of Eritreans and Ethiopians as the begining of their demise. As for the poor anti-Eritrea Ethiopian opposition I think no one should pay attention to them because they have no vision at all, as harsh as this may sound they can’t see beyond their nose in broad day light, they are as narrow minded as Woyanne and pay only lip service to the rule of law and democracy, they don’t have a true understanding of the objective situation of Ethiopia at all, they only live on the “glory” of the past.

I wonder if those who sent you venomous messages didn’t understand that they can be held responsible for their threats, in their voices you can hear irrational rage, hatred and even fear because they are getting challenged and see the real possibility of defeat.

The death threats are nothing more than fear of the truth for one to threaten you by phone show how much courage they have i.e none and how scared they are of your honorable message. The death threats are an act of Desperation which reflect the woyanne attitude of force is best when will melese learn force is not the answer but commonsense and objectivity IS.
Keep on the fight for free speech which we don’t have in Ethiopia even now they lie we do. DO lets this threat stop you or the woyanne will of accomplish their OBJECTIVE instead phone the police and track down the cowards.

What Elias and his team of brave people has done to the Woyanne Psyche is beyond measure. It is a correct and timely choice, but its powerful political message to those who love Ethiopia is like a political earthquake and a tsunami in one.

The one sure thing that we can take to the bank is that the deafening screams coming from the Tribal Juntas cadres and cheerleaders and the Eritrean treason camp is a sign of desperation. ER’s correct moves and success can be measured by the frequency and intensity of the screams coming from these axis of evil.

  23. Simachew says:

I know Elias, I’ve worked with Elias and Elias is not my friend. However here is my view of all these: Does Elias love his country Ethiopia? Yes, more than most of us in terms of putting his time, his person and money for the sole purpose of working for his country, in his own misguided way he is out there fighting for the cause of democracy and freedom. Is he amenable to work with anyone that does not agree with him 100%? Not at all, my experience with him is that “his way or the highway”, dictatorially in-par to that animal Mengistu who in his love for a country managed to almost wipe out the intellectual, military and financial base of the country he professes to love. Similarly if Elias ever gets into a leadership position of even a small village, God help us all as he is capable of killing everyone in the name of freeing everyone else. Is Elias in cahoots with Woyane? Not in a million years. He is a very good Ethiopian, but to me wrong time and again in how he expresses and puts into practice his love of country. Accuse Elias of being stubborn, irrational, unreasonable professing a dictum of “everyone is wrong every time and I am right all the time”. Accuse him of using his website to confuse the public and blackmail anyone who does not agree with him. Accuse him of being short sighted in selecting Afeworki as the man of the year for Ethiopia – the same man and his party that has caused and still continues to cause Ethiopians untold misery, billions of Ethiopian Bir and thousands of Ethiopians lives lost to a series of useless wars and for a reason that did not materialize so far as freedom from oppression and prosperity for Eritreans. To think such a man has the best in his heart for Ethiopia is misguided and typical of Elias’s idiosyncrasy picking up a cause for a month, throwing everything he has on that to find his own brand of solution, alienating a lot of people in the process and as quickly as he picked that cause, leave it unfinished and he is already jumping onto another one, all the time bringing a misguided resolution for a good cause. Without his website Elias is nothing and he has a power on that website because it is among the oldest and consistent in terms of its survival thru the years. If you look deep enough, everything else he touched has either disappeared or being rendered useless. You bring Elias to a meeting, and then people just go away, some after exchanging harsh words with him and some after being disgusted with his unilateral and rude behavior. So accuse Elias of all the above, but trying to make him anti Ethiopia and working for Woyane? That is foolish and devoid of any imagination. We need to stop living in our limited world of things are either black or white, you are with me or you are against me. So little of our daily life happens within that range and so much, the majority of our daily activities reside within the grey area of life and we really need to get there and spread our imagination to come up with something else. And to think of those mentally diminished people who left him the disgusting messages? What on earth is their justification for those kinds of words? Oh my God, what happened to us all?

I visited the Paltalk chatrooms today and the woyanes’ anger was in the open for all to see. They are angry knowing fully their TPLF junta will soon be out of commission. If all it took was one single article at EthioReview to get them all riled up, why wouldn’t we think of this before LOL
Elias is a genius ! With his sarcasm laced but true article about the Eritrean President, he hit the chord and the nerves of the world renowned liars and carriers of false gospel – both the woyanes and their clueless supporters alike. Elias’ article was a shot that was heard around the world. He presented some hard facts based on hard realities that the Woyane cadres found unable to counter. That is a very clever move !

  27. J. A. says:

    Dear Elias,
The selection of Mr. Issayas as the Person of the Year, is a brilliant coup in political subterfuge, but beyond the layer of the political circuit, it issues multiple messages. Here is how I see it.
Mr. Iasayas was a freedom fighter whose goal was to advance the ambition and aspiration of the Eritrean people, to carve out their own destinies. For that he was crucified, first by the Emperor’s regime, then the Derg, and later by the present regime. I don’t necassarily believe Mr. Issayas is anti Ethiopian or anti democratic as he was depicted for the last thrity years.
The selection of Mr. Issayas by ER opens up a new window of opportunities for Mr. Issayas and Eritrea as well. One area that i will point out: There are nearly 1 million Ethiopian baby boomers who will be retiring in the next five years or so. Many do not want to return to Ethiopia for various reasons, and many do not want to stay in their adoptive countries in their retirment age. From nearly 3.5 to 5.0 billion dollars of spending power is at stake here and the best bidder will get this huge prize. Who will get it? Meles or Issayas?
Mr. Issayas can come up with appealing incentives to bring these Ethiopian and Eritrean retirees into Eritrea with the modification of tax laws, housing incentives, foreigner’s rights of properties, etc. There are nations as we speak that are making bundles from strategies such as this and prospering with new revenues. Costa Rica in South America today, Italy and Greece (from Europe) in the 1950s, and India in the 1970s heve prospered magnificently.
It’s true that Mr. Issayas has a huge work cut out for him; first and foremost, the question of his demonization by three successive regimes in the last thirty plus years. My advice: Employ a massive media campaign by reaching out to the Ethiopian communities world-wide, telling them that Eritreans and Ethiopians are inseparable brothers and sisters, and that his battle in the past wasn’t against Ethiopians but against the egregious leadership that ruined the entire region. Demystification ought be the first priority of business for Mr. Issaya and Eritrea. Media outlets such as ER could help, but there got to be more. Mr. Issayas can easily win over the millions of Ethiopians in the Diaspora by telling his story, a story up until now told by his enemies. The lamentable aspect of this crisis in the Horn for the most part is a lack of communication. Mr. Issayas could grab the opportunity as extended by ER and make his saga of the last forty years imparted. One of the problems in African politics is the inability to appreciate good ideas such as that manifested by ER.
I think this is big and Mr. Issayas should create a commission to investigate the framework to materialize such a plan. Rememeber, we are a global community and Mr. Issayas has every right to make his case heard.
    Go for it!

    Thank you.

    J.A

    Dear Elias Kifle,

I can testify Ethiopian Review has been one of the best news productions of modern journalism directed by the brightest and intelligent Ethiopian editors under the supervision of the highly qualified Ethiopian journalist – Elias Kifle.
Elias is the product of Ethiopia, and as such he has an urgent mission for Ethiopia, and his mission is to liberate the Ethiopian people from the most hated, detested, and ridiculed Woyanne regime.

Insulting or threatening such a professional editor is exposing one’s own folly, weakness or ignorance to the whole world; it is the lack of understanding and comprehending the true message – the Ethiopian Review from the true messenger – Elias Kifle, and to the good and the bad audience – the Ethiopian people.

My little advice to my friend Elias Kifle is to trust in God, and I urge him to read a passage from Psalm: “When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me? All day long they twist my words; they are always plotting to harm me. They conspire, they lurk, they watch my steps eager to take my life” (56:3-6).

May the good Lord protect you from all your adversaries and guide you in the right direction he has chosen for you!

  33. Truth~ says:

I honestly believe the survivalof Ethiopian depend on the opposition leaders strategy for the struggle ahead. One strategy, which is no brainier is to go well along with the enemy of your enemy. Esias is playing a role in the weakening Weyane. Our work to defeat Weyane is by far easier if we turn this clear truth to our advantage and work on it. No doubt in my mind except Weyanes no other Ethiopian could have such a hysteric reaction about Essias. Like millions of Ethiopians, I lost many loved ones in Eritrea and Tigray. When I was young and naive, I blamed it all on Shabia/Weyane. But the truth is our suffering came from ourselves in part. We imported an ideology that triggered all the miseries and suffering brought upon us (Ethiopians and Eritrean).

In 1998-2000 Ethio-Eritrea war, so many Ethiopians were against Shabia believing that all their humiliation and suffering is due to Shabia.

It didn’t take long when the truth came out. It is not Shabia that killed so many Ethiopians with high caliber bullet targeting on the heads and chest. It is not Shabia that killed a mother in front of her kids simply for crying for husband who was dragged by weyane tugs. It is Weyane who is more proud in the sacrifice it made for Eritrea independence and as guarantor of future Eritrea.

Essias becomes a splinter in Weyane throat and make swallow a looted wealth hard as they wished/planned for.

Elias should be condemned when he attacks any organization that stands against TPLF. I condemned Elias for not standing with Birtukan. At least, he should have been stayed silent. I condemn him when he attacked Dr. Taye who is a tested Weyane enemy. His responsibly as a genuine anti-Weyane should be narrowing the gap between Eritreans and Ethiopians for common good, the riddance of weyane

Dear Elias and all ethiopians and Eritreans.
I never even think there would be a day an Ethiopian intelectual would not only nominate an Eritrean as the man of the year, but even think of Eritreans as human beings. We have seen Ethiopian intelectuals, PHDs (including one Ethiopian professor in Texas)treating Eritreans as the virus and the hidden cancer of Ethiopia. We read a lot about Eritreans in ethiopian websites, but none was ever defending Eritreans. When Eritreans, like me not even speaking a word of Tigrigna, born and raised in Ethiopia, served faithfuly in Ethiopian governement were stripped off their belongings and were sent walking through the desert to Eritrea (unknown country for us), no Ethiopian voice was raised to protest. So, it is nice to see Elias’s opinion and the voices of Ethiopians thinking about us as human beings.
That said, don’t be mistaken Isayas is the other face of Meles. They are both dictators and both are against Ethiopian and Eritrean people. Actually, they both have the same obsession. Destroy Meles or destroy Isayas. Meles will support Eritrrean opposition, Isayas will support Ethiopian opposition, they will both starve their people to buy weapons to serve their purpose while the countries manufacturing the weapons will get fatter and fatter. The opposition of today is the dictator of tomorrow.

    Elias,

Like everyone else, I will say you did a good job. I am no supporter of Weyane nor Shaebia. In a real world, you probably may not support Issayas based on his past history with Weyane, I hope, to what he did to Ethiopians. You must also remember that with the support of OLF and Shaebia, Weyane is now in power. You have also no guarantee that Issayas stands for Ethiopia as you may sound like you are standing for Issayas. You must also know that Shaebia under Issayas killed EPPF members as they become stronger, why is that? Perhaps it is okay to support Eritreans but I don’t think it is a good idea to do that with Issayas. Until this day, I have not heard Issayas saying he has no problem with Ethiopians that tells me like Weyane, he has contempt for Ethiopians. Remember he was the one who said along with Meles who said he will make Ethiopians suffer for 100 years. That being said, if there is genuineness, there is nothing wrong with forgiveness as you are trying to do and bring Eritreans and Ethiopians to closeness. At the same time, you have to be cautious. Until this day, it is my experience that most Eritreans have the contempt for Ethiopians after living elite life in Ethiopia. Now they are going around saying they will make Eritrea better than Ethiopia like Singapore. Understand also that if they have it in their own way, I am sure they will have the downfall of Ethiopia.

It is also my wish however, rather than years of continuous war, I want both Ethiopia and Eritrea to live side by side peacefully.

TPLF regime heading to ultimate demise, President Isaias underscores
    By Staff
    Jan 6, 2009, 13:04

Asmara, 6 January 2009 – In continuation of the interview he gave to the national media, President Isaias Afwerki said that despite attempts to prolong its stay in power through securing various types of external subsidy, the TPLF regime is heading to ultimate demise. He underscored that the regime’s political line characterized with the policy of divide and rule over the Ethiopian people continues to be exposed from time to time.

Indicating that the TPLF adopted the so-called Federal Constitution in 1995 in a bid to serve its narrow twin-purpose scheme, as well as prolong its stay in power, the President pointed out that it not only gave the existing natural differences in the country an institutional shape but also deepen them. The growing animosity and political, as well as armed opposition against the regime in various Ethiopian regions, including Tigray, is an outcome of such a reality, he elaborated

President Isaias went on to explain that following rejection by the Ethiopian people as a result of falling hostage to its own political line, the TPLF regime resorted to the policy of seeking external support. The fact that the regime became the servant of the US Administration is an ample proof of that, which nonetheless exposed the regime to even worse situation in every aspect, he added.

The President further noted that the Ethiopian economy is moving from bad to worse due the fact that the regime from the outset embarked on controlling and plundering the country’s economy rather than promoting economic development. In this respect, he pointed out that at a time when a quarter of the Ethiopian population is suffering from famine, the TPFLF regime’s claim as if the country has registered economic growth is but sheer joke.

As regards the Eritrean-Ethiopian border issue, President Isaias underlined that the TPLF regime has been totally defeated and that the issue has undoubtedly reached legal conclusion. He asserted that although the regime in pursuit of its narrow interests sought to foment animosity between the people of Eritrea and Tigray, the people and Government of Eritrea, provoked by the regime’s perpetration of crisis and obstacles, did not at all manifest animosity towards the Tigrayan people. The President declared that as both peoples are destined to coexist together, relations with the people of Tigray would play significant role in fostering sound relations and mutual prosperity in the future between the people of Eritrea and Ethiopia as a whole. He further asserted that Eritrea’s relations with all political forces in the region, including that of Ethiopia is aimed at creating conducive ground for promoting peace and cooperation at the regional level.

On Djibouti’s current smear campaign and the declaration of war against Eritrea on the part of the country’s President, President Isaias reiterated that Eritrea would under no circumstances engage in squabbles and that it sees no reason to resort to war. “We would only like to tell them: you have declared war and you have a debt,” he stated.

Regarding the TPLF regime’s invasion of Somalia, the President underlined that the subsequent massive acts of destruction to life and property the regime committed in that country by far exceed the atrocities perpetrated by the Haileselassie and Mengistu regimes. In this respect, he pointed out that the two-year old invasion did not bear any outcome other than destruction and utter failure. President Isaias further cited the huge inhumane crimes committed against the Somali people, about which the world media did not give due coverage owing to the pressure applied by Washington. And as such, both the TPLF regime and the US Administration are liable to face justice for these enormous crimes, he underscored. The President stated that Eritrea has the obligation and trust to play due role towards restoring normalcy to Somalia and promote peace in the region.

Concerning Sudan, President Isaias said that Sudan is currently at the cross roads due to complicating external interference. He also stressed that as Sudan’s engulfment in endless turmoil would not benefit its people, Eritrea and the region as a whole, the Eritrean government has not only been involved in constructive engagement but also advocating the need for extending the necessary support to Sudan so that it may not fall into such a scenario. The President further affirmed that Eritrea would continue to work for the benefit of the people of both countries and the region.

Commenting about the so-called Sana’a Forum, President Isaias stated that the game is being played by the TPLF alone and that Sudan and Yemen have only nominal presence in it. He added that the whole affair is not only a manifestation of the regime’s illusion and total bankruptcy but also represents one of its failed foreign strategy.

    Elias,
You may love your country ateast as much as we do. You may wish weyane removed and democracy prevailed in Ethiopia atleast as much as we do. But I do believe Isayas have some part is dismanling Ethiopia, initiating, faning and spreading ethnocentrism in Ethiopia and separating Ethiopians and Eritreans. I don’t really believe he desrves the nomination. How can a father who is not good enough for his own children be good enough for his neighbour’s childern? He is not good for us, atleast not now. Both Meles and Issayas are equally responsible for the misary and suffering of Ethiopians and Eriterians.

Ethiopians and Eritreans should unite their efforts to get ride of these dictators. Oppositions who are working with either tyrants can’t be trustworthy. They learn only tyrany from tyrants. You can only look like your friend.

  74. Afeworki M. says:

Some people just don’t get it, do they? I can’t, for the life of me, understand what it is that people like Gashu find hard to unscramble about
Eritrea’s clearly stated and consistently demonstrated position on Ethiopian unity. Please show some elementary commonsense and stop the irrational and foolish blather! Let me try to spell out some glaringly obvious facts: 1. During the TPLF’s earlier stages of armed struggle, its declared intention was to establish a separate ‘Abai Tigrai’ republic. It was the EPLF’s uncompromising and consistent stand against that idea that forced Woyane to eventually abandon that goal. Once the TPLF had settled for the goal of a free, united Ethiopia, Shaebia went ahead and helped it defeat and remove the murderous Dergue regime from power, convinced that it was helping to liberate the Ethiopian people from the brutal Dergue. At that time, Shaebia acted responsibly and in good faith, because it had no way of knowing that Woyane was an inherently heartless ‘beast’ that would turn out to be even worse than the regime it replaced. As far as Shaebia was concerned it was helping a supposedly progressive people’s movement rescue the Ethiopian people from Mengistu’s brutal rule. Is it Shaebia’s fault, then, if Woyane for reasons that are utterly inexplicable and defy all reason, has turned out to be the heartless criminal entity that it is?
    2. President Issaias’ and the Eritrean Government’s stand in favour of a united Ethiopia is not simply an empty rhetoric: Eritrea’s actions with regard to this issue have been completely consistent with its declared policy. Not only is it providing indispensable assistance to anti-Woyane Ethiopian movements in the fight to remove Woyane from power, but it has made it its responsibility to guide them in the direction of a struggle towards a united Ethiopia. What better evidence can there be for Eritrea’s unwavering commitment to Ethiopia’s unity, than the ‘One Ethiopia’ booklet that was issued by its government, clearly and unambiguously spelling out its official policy on this issue?
