STATEMENT ON KENYAN ELECTION

The Ethiopian National Transitional Council (ENTC) would like to congratulate the people of Kenya for holding a peaceful, free, and fair election on March 4, 2013.

We also congratulate the winner, President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta, and all the candidates for participating in a robust election campaign.

By choosing to come together, overcoming enormous difficulties, and hold a freely contested election, you have transformed Kenya into a truly democratic nation. The positive effect of what you have just accomplished will not be limited to Kenya. You have become an inspiration to your neighbors, we Ethiopians, who continue to live under a brutal dictatorship where journalists, human rights advocates and political opponents are labeled terrorists and thrown in jail.

As we work hard to transition Ethiopia to a democratic country, we will learn from your experience, and seek your partnership in advocating democratic governance, human rights and rule of law for our neighborly countries.
