If I were the president – Gabe Hamda

Ethiopian Review has asked scholars and prominent individuals what 10 things they would do immediately if they are elected president or prime minister of Ethiopia. The following is by Dr Gabe Hamda. (Click here to read what others wrote.)

Top 10 actions I would immediately take if I were to be elected president of Ethiopia.

1. If the presidency was not through election, decree a fair and free election to elect president.

2. Decree an executive order of amnesty to all former leaders including Meles Zenawi, Mengistu HM and all political prisoners.

3. Decree term limits of president to no more than two terms.

4. Engage Ethiopians in the Diaspora to return on full time or part-time to actively participate in national development.

5. Engage ethnic leaders toward cultivating an environment of inclusion for all people.

6. Initiate a national campaign of education for all.

7. Form and cultivate a transparent government.

8. Establish public servant and civic servant code of ethics.

9. Campaign to create a healthy environment.

10. Initiate a public health campaign.

  1. Well, Dr., it you have a plan to give amnesty to Mengestu and Meles, you might as well have a plan to free all murderers and others who have committed rape and despicable crimes who are in serving time in Ethiopian prison. Mengestu and Meles are not any different than those criminals who are serving time in prisonl. In fact, Mengestu and Meles have more innocent Ethiopian people blood on their hands than those who are serving time for one or two murders. I am sorry, you have lost my vote for this reason alone.

  2. For the sake of national peace and reconcilation and to build an Ethiopia it is possible to pardon Meles, Mengistu and others for the evil deeds they have done so far.
In a free and democratic Ethiopia, the military and other government institutions should represent all Ethiopians not one ethnic group like the case is in woyane Ethiopia. EFFORT and other party companies who are meant to loot and exploit should all be nationalized.

  3. As someone who unjustly lost INNOCENT family members and immediate relatives to both regimes of Mingistu Haile Mariam and Meles Zenawi. And again as someone who is still nursing the wound of not even knowing the whereabouts of my other relatives, on that basis alone I am glad you are not the president and hope you never hold a position where your decision can effect other peoples’ lives not to mention a judiciary one let alone the presidency.
I believe thousands of Ethiopian families who share my experience would agree with me.

Even Melez, the psychopath and his TPLF terrorists, did not afford amnesty to Mingistu Haile Mariam.

  4. I think Meles needs even more serious punishment, had there been, than what is imposed on mengistu. Both are killers but Zenawi’s crime is aggrivated by two additional factors: organized robbery and destroying national unity. Thus the latter needs serious punishment. I suspect he will be killed in the near future while yearning for power and money but if caught alive he has to be sentenced,,, But we have to impose only life imprisonment and avoid death penaly on our land after removal of Meles. Not becaue we need to revenge him but to implement the rule of law, criminal leaders like banda meles should not escape trial.

  5. Mengestu killed Ethiopians out of ignorance and out of some kind of ideology, melese on the other hand committed treason and mass killing out of pure hatred of a nation and its people.Mr.,you have no authority to refuse justice for a whole ethnic group of Gambela who have tasted the brutality of Melese first hand.

  6. Because of your alike, Ethiopia was ruled by monsters after monsters . Now you ” Dr.” if you are a president , you will give freedom for those blood sucker Mengistu and Meles.

  7. I have nothing to add but to repeat what Akakizeraf said

  8. Brothers, let us think about South Africa, what mandela has done? he started building 16 years ago through Forgivness. If we want to see the new Ethiopia we need to forgive every one.
