In keeping with its annual tradition, Ethiopian Review will soon announce The 2008 Person of the Year. Last year, we left it to readers to make the choice, and you chose Prof. Alemayehu Gebremariam.
This year the decision will be made by the Ethiopian Review editorial group, but we would like to hear your suggestions.
The selection is based on who made the most significant contribution for the betterment of Ethiopia in the past 12 months.

The best person of the year, and ofcourse of all time, has got to be the mother of Elias Kifle; because she gave us Elias.
Ato Elias: I know you may not be comfortable to consider your self for candidacy, but let me justify my pick.
Elias Kifle has enormous qualities:
-he is unfaltering in exposing all evel deeds of woyane
-he is energetic and persistent (remember his email exchange with washington post)
-he has the audacity to stand against anyone, anytime, anywhere, under any condition if it is for good of Ethiopia (he was the first person to stand against the divisive and totalitarian approach of Hailu Shawl, inaddition he was the only one who dares to speak to Lidetu Ayalew and ask him to get to line while all other media simply isolate him)

I nominate the President of Eritrea, Ato Isaias afwerki , who has singlehandedly withstood some unbelievable opposition and tremendous unveiled and some veiled threats from the US and its various allies in a futile attempt to succumb to their wishes and desires. Some of the open secret wishes of the US are that Eritrea should not give sanctuary for any Ethiopian opposition forces and that Eritrea should refrain from “Supporting” the fighting forces in Somalia. Their self serving request was quickly followed up by a media blitz to demonize and isolate Eritrea and to significantly increase military “Assistance” to the Weyane regime in spite of the latter’s dismal record on human rights. One does not have to be a rocket scientist to figure out how difficult of a burden was on the person of president Isaias when some Eritreans [and some party members] were saying “Why don’t we kick out the Ethiopians when we know they never stood with us when Weyane unleashed the so called Badme war”? Some even went as far as stating that the “Ethiopians did not sympathize with our people when successive Ethiopian regimes were bombing wholesale villages killing many innocent civilian population including the elderly, women and children” etc. To his credit, the man stood by his principle stating that “Our enmity has never been with the Ethiopian people but with their selfish and greedy rulers”. He does this at the expense of being labeled all sorts of unflattering insults – including the threat of “terrorist sponsoring state”. To me, that is something worth recognizing for credit as they say “Give credit where credit is due”!

Teddy Afro is man of the year for exposing TPLF beyond shred of doubt that this regime stands for Theft, Piracy, Lust and Fake since it came to power eighteen years ago.

First and foremost I nominate The Ethiopian People, who steadfastly refused to be dismembered and divided along narrow ethnic lines. Every weird strong or weak so called national liberation fronts assaulted the populace with barrages of hate and divisive innuendos since the early 60′s but the people did not oblige. Still it is telling these despotic narrow nationalist in power or in the bushes that there is a lot more benefit in unity than in being divided. The Oromos are telling it miscreants narrow nationalists that nothing is wrong with living with the Amaharas, Somalis, Afars, Sidamos, Kafichos, Gumuz, Tigreans and all the rest nationalities in Ethiopia. I say this populace deserves the top spot in the nomination. For the 2nd spot I nominate Professor Seid Hassen. This gentleman is well gifted and has learned enough from experience to tell us what is right and what should be avoided as wrong. I do not him know personally but I have read some of his articles on this and other websites. His articles well organized and written in a way that they can be understood by anyone who can read and understand the English language. He is an excellent communicator. I hope one day I will have the privilege of meeting him in person. God Bless Him and His Family. I believe Kenenisa and Tirunesh deserve to share the 3rd spot.

This has been done before, it doesn’t have to be person of the year all the time, besides it makes an individual seem more important than he or she is.
I nominate the heroes who have picked up arms and are daily challenging the Woyanne junta. As we know Woyanne has a huge military supported by all the western powers, while the Ethiopian FREEDOM FIGHTERS are confronting this fascist military with only the weapons they have in their possession and are daily arming new recruits by weapons captured from Woyanne mercenaries. The Eritrean President Issayas Afewerki for standing solo with struggle for the liberation of the Ethiopian and Somali people when the whole world gave up on them. His principled stand on issues of justice and fairness is unmatched in the annals of African history.
He is guided by principles and not by simple political calculations or gains. All progressive Ethiopian and Somali forces look at him for guidance and leadership. His moral standing is the Agazzi’s worst nightmare and a severe headache to the CIA and MI6.

He left the weyane puppet parlama, crossed the desert, rivers and border on foot to eritrea and joined the ethiopian peoples patriotic front to start the resistance struggle against the TPLF regime. There are more than 20,000 Political prisoners held at Dedessa, Ziway, Dedessa, Qaliti, Bado Zero, Shewa Robit etc..prisons. Ethiopains are still intimidated and imprisoned. I think Isseias Afwerki should be man of the year. When all the opposition groups are changing courses, degrees and even parties and are becoming more TPLF servants, the only man who has never changed a single beat of a direction towards his stance with the TPLF junta is Isseyas. When all our nieghbours are giving deaf ears to our sufferings and day to day hardships that is waged against us by the TPLF junta, only Isseyas is trying to do something about it. A very important step had to be taken in the Ethiopian struggle for democracy, and these two men (I am sure in collaboration with other great thinking Ethiopians) converted it into reality! If it wasn’t for their break with the tradition of Ethiopian politicians to stay in one place and regurgitate the same thing for years and decades, our future would be doomed. They present a comprehensive analysis of the troubles our country faces, and offer a creative and logical solution!
And I am more than sure that this organization they have created will make something huge happen in our country soon. Whereas that will be joyful for many, it will embarassing for the critics and specially for those of us who have not helped the organization’s works.

My choice is Eng. Hailu Shawel, the chairman of AEUP. Eng. hailu has won in landslide electione in 2005 against meles zenawi. He has founded and organized AEUP, th elargest party with more than 5 million members. He is also the leader of the most genuine opposition party in Ethiopia. Unlike UDJ, the AEUP has rejected any idea of weyane parlama or participating in election without the implementations of the 8 pre conditions of ethiopian people. He has fired 5 former kinjit members for their attempted coup detta against the elected leader and revisionist stands. Since then Birtukan mideksa has created UDJ and is now ready to work with TPLF members like Siye Abraha and Gebru Ass Rat also with Ethnocentrists like Negass Gidada.
So Eng. Hailu should be the man of the year for his bold stands, honesty and consistency.

Dr. Berhanu Nega should be the person of the year because he is the one who chooses another way of strugling the woyane regime. He didn’t went to the decision randomly but after a carful understanding of the represive regime plus the future consequeses to the ethiopian people as particular and the people of the horn in general.

I feel as if the situation is ethiopia is sort of similar to that in the middle east. Byt that i mean, The Woyanes represent “Israel” because they run the country as they wish and for their benefit.And the people of ethiopia represent “Palestine” because we are stripped of our rights and cant do much about it….

most of the ppl mntioned above end up messing up the country. the real hero was the visionist of the ‘ethiopia tanebalech’ project and one of the ten CNN heros Ato Yohannes G/Giorgis. None of the people you mention made a tangiable change to the country. Please let us award ppl on the front of the battle, not ppl who talk about the battle.
